Im having trouble deciding on my next helmet. Its time to upgrade and ive always said that i wont cheap out on a helmet. I had an old hjc helmet and dropped it so im looking to buy a new helmet.

option A upgrade to an Arai RX-7 600+

option B upgrade to an hjc ac-12 (carbon fiber) 200 +/-

like i said price doesnt matter when its comes to my head. and i know there is a big price difference but is the arai really worth the extra 400 bones? To me it fits the same as the hjc and feels a little lighter.

Having rode in an HJC AC model for the past 5 yrs, I can say that the Arais, Shoeis, etc, fit better, have better padding, and have less wind noise. However Max(LordMDP) has the new carbon HJC and he likes it, and it looks pretty sweet. Plus he is use to nice helmets, so if he likes it then it must be ok, that and Spies wears HJC. :D

i went to cycle gear and tried on a few last friday while i was in gwinnett awaiting my firefighter test scores. they need a wind tunnel at the dealership so i can see how much wind noise they both have. lol plus i need one that matches the bike.

I am rocking an Icon AirFrame helmet. I bought it for looks mainly. I know Arai and Shoei have great helmets, but 600+, eh...i'll pass. Also, I don't care for Shoei b/c they make their logo so god damn big. It looks hideous! BLAH!

Unless you dropped it from like 10+ ft, or someone's head was it in.... then you probably don't have anything to worry about (I heard an Arai engineer say this himself, on national television).

But if you want to upgrade anyways:
DOT is decent, and the current SNELL standard is useless.
Narrow the list down to the best fitting, most comfortable DOT helmets that you can afford. For most folks, this should leave them with ~4-6 different helmets to choose from

After that, choose based on cost/design/features, color etc....

Personally, I like full face helmets with anti-fog visors (KBC, Scorpion and I think HJC might have some anti-fog visors now).

My favorite overall helmet is probably my Shoei TZR, but if money were no object then I would probably get an X-11 as a summer helmet.

Arai helmets are nice, but I can't justify the premium in the pricing. I could literally buy like 6 older-model scorpion/KBC helmets (with spare visors for each helmet) for what one new Arai costs.

I have an AC-12. have had it for the past 3 years.
it has horrible wind noise. and I get this cross wind action inside the helmet and it dries my eyes out.
The visor is really hard to open now too.
I cant really tell if the vents work that well either.

but other than that its been a pretty good helmet. the padding is removable and comes in different thicknesses. Ill be buying a new helmet soon though, the visor thing is just plain annoying now.

Get a Suomy if you want nice paint, get a Shoei if you want a quiet helmet, get a Shark if you want good quality that you won't see everyone else wearing. Arais are common and its the only helmet that I have repeatedly see fall apart just through normal riding. I will never buy another Arai again after my last one started losing pieces. My HJC's never gave me any problems.

I just recently bought a suomy spec1r and now I wouldnt even consider owning any other brand, its the lightest helmet and when you are riding you can't even tell you have on a helmet no wind drag and the lining feels like suede and the cheek pads feel like memory foam

WTF?

I only wear Suomy or Arai!! That's from experience. I have a shit ton of other helmets but they don't get worn.

I prefer the Suomy though! Absolutely great helmet-ultra light. Does get a bit noisy but you're on a bike!!

European Helmets have higher crash test standards than SNELL or DOT. That's why I wear Suomy.
