This is PROOF you don't need an SLR or Photoshop CSx to take decent shots and make a decent thread.
I have a Canon Powershot (CHEAP PnS). and these pics were PP'd with Paint.net (FREE Software) :goodjob:
don't get me wrong... i would like a Canon DSLR but i'm not breaking my back trying to get one. i gotta get this DD painted :D

I don't understand what is supposed to be so amazing about those photos?
They are pretty soft. Even my worst lens on my camera (yeah, its an SLR) could take much sharper photos than those.
You (the uninitiated) probably won't appreciate the difference of a large objective lens and larger camera sensor until you compare the results one next to each other.
All an SLR does is give you better tools to control the kind of picture you get. I still carry around my Canon ultracompact..... but lets not get silly here... there is absolutely nothing picture-wise that my Canon SD630 does that my SLR can't do 10x better. The ultracompact fits in my pocket better and can take video... that is why I still use it!
Besides.... anyone who knows anything knows that picture quality is 90% the lens and 10% the camera.

lol :D
1. i never said they were amazing. as i recall i used words like "decent". if you notice the subject isn't all glitz and glam either.
2. i MADE them softer. it was the look i was going for. if you notice they're actually WARMER as well. hence why i mentioned Paint.net as my editting software. some people arent all pirates and don't have access to PS or have the funds to buy it outright.
3. this was for the folks down playing their Point and Shoots and jumping on the SLR train prior to knowing how to use their PnS' to its full extent. this was a thread to make people into believers.
4. i do recall stating that i DO want an SLR. and I (the uninitiated) do appreciate the blah blah blah so on and so forth that you speak of. im no pro like yourself but i've learned quite a bit about SLR's and lenses from speaking with friends that use SLR's and asking a plethora of questions relating to such.
5. anyone who knows anything knows that picture quality is 95%(if not more) the Photographer and 5%(if not less) the camera/lens combination.

I get what you were trying to do but sadly I have to agree that those pix are not anything great.
Artistic? Yip.
Have we seen worse? Absolutely!
Do you need a DSLR? Heck no!
Do they take amazing pictures? definitely but it depends who is behind the camera.
I believe there has been better pix posted to prove the worthiness of the modern point 'n shoots.
edit: still repped ya :goodjob: for no crazy angles :lmfao:

lolz! i still love you!
but yeah...
just to not have any sort of confusion here..
uhh... these aren't the greatest shots on earth. i KNOW. even I have taken better over the years (look at my Cayman Islands vacation thread). this just so happened to be my first time taking shots and using Paint.net (i usually use PS for all my editting needs)
i know in the past some have said that they dont have PS and what not so this and that and :blah:
not to mention i wanted to post pics of our truck somewhere
so this thread was basically stating that with a decent camera and free software folks can make posts that arent a pain to look at. :o

I'm no pro. I did sell a photo once that got published (i took it with an ultracompact PnS!)... lol but I am definitely not a pro!
I don't think there is anything wrong with people making the jump to SLR. I orignally got mine because I wanted something that would
1. Take better low light photos and high contrast photos
2. Give me better image quality overall
3. Not red-eye the f*** out of people if I used the flash.
Basically, I had been bumping my head against the limit of what my PnS could do (even in manual mode), so I took the plunge.
I had no idea what I was getting into. I'm hoping that all the reading and noob mistakes I am making will pay off in the long run in terms of better photos down the road!
