View Full Version : Why with today's job market?

As some of you know, I manage a Sprint Store.

About once a week or so, I have someone come in looking for a job. That's understandable, I'm not hiring, but I don't mind keeping resumes on file. Here recently though, I have seen an increase in people coming in dressed in:

Sweat pants
Ripped Jeans
T-shirts
Un Shaven
Bracelets
Tennis Shoes
Flip Flops

and even worse, reeking of cigarette smoke.

Now, I have nothing against smokers. But at some point, did no one ever tell you not to smell like smoke.

I just had a guy walk out of here in his torn designer jeans, nike shox and a short sleeve t-shirt with a hoodie, smelling like a 3 day old ashtray after asking for a job. I almost choked on the stench of the smoke, and I was just astounded at the courage.

Can anyone explain this to me, why if you really needed a job, why you wouldn't dress professionally and maybe not smoke a cigarette right before you walked in to ask for a job.

Does anyone think this is acceptable. Would you hire anyone who did this?

People come in like that because they dont think those rules apply. And they believe that you owe them something. haha

I had a lady come in my car lot the other day asking me If I had any cars for $100 a month. I politely said "Ma'am my cell phone bill is $150 a month, so no we dont have a car that cheap. No dealership would"

People these days always thinking people owe them something...damn

Exactly the way it should be done. I know people who go into a place wearing torn jeans and tshirts and wonder why they dont get called about the job

I used to sell cars. Its not that we owe them, people just want something for nothing. It's human nature. I worked for numerous different dealers and it doesn;t matter whether or not I worked for dodge or lincoln or BMW, people wanted 100 a month payments.

You would be surprised at the amount of people that just DO NOT KNOW.

From young to old, there has been a severe disconnect in job etiquette.

Of course you do have the lazy stupid people that just do not care.

It is not acceptable at all, but I would point them in the right direction if they are willing to listen.

Its starting to get to the point that people covered in tattoos, people who think not shaving is cool, and people who have hoola hoop gauges in their ears are just gonna be fucked. Its getting desperate, not employer is going to want someone looking like that working for them. Period

I was always taught to dress appropriately. I went and applied at a land survey company and wore a suit. the owner joked about how I needed to dress down for the job, but that he appreciated the fact that I was willing to dress up to come meet him.

I've had interviews with friends of the family and never wore less than a button down and slacks.

And I NEVER smoke before an interview. Once my cologne or aftershave goes on, I do not do anything else until after the interview.

Employers are beefing up the requirements outside of your experience. They want the most dedicated worker they can find, so your personality and image is going to weigh as much as your brains.

People need to get it together or find themselves jobless AFTER the economy picks up.

I'm covered in tattoos, but my boss didn't even know. He was extremely suprised to find out that my right arm is almost completely sleeved.

Its not the tattoos. It's presentation. I wear long sleeves because I think it looks nicer. I could get a job as a mechanic or whatever doing manual work and not give a shit about my tattoos. But I knew before i got them that I was planning on working in a field where I would wear long sleeves.

Doesn't always work this way either though. I went in for an interview a couple years ago for a job. Dressed in khakis, nice polo shirt, and nice shoes. When I got to the interview the two guys interviewing me were in tailored suits and ties. They looked at me as if I was a bum off the street. Then the guy I "would" have been working directly for walks in to ask me some questions and he is wearing khakis and a polo shirt. My point is that I learned that day you have to pretty much overdress for the interview, and then get comfortable after you have the job. First impressions are everything because people in authority are shallow. :goodjob:

Overdressing is the key.

I applied at a Survey company, went in with dress slacks and a button down shirt and tie. Boss said, "well, you are the best dressed surveyor I've seen, but I appreciate you dressing for the interview. Most younger applicants don't have the self-respect to do so." Needless to say I got the job.

My current job, I dressed in a suit, my boss interviewed me in jeans and a polo. He told me he was impressed thar I would dress to that extent, but that I didnt have to from that point on.

aguynamedpat
06-03-2009, 12:25 PM
I always go in in slacks, dress shoes, and AT LEAST a polo, usually a full button down, and if I feel the need sometimes a tie. First impression goes a long way, I am always saying yes sir/yes ma'am and maintaining eye contact with the interviewer. I do not smoke so I dont have to worry about that, but I always make sure I have on some cologne and fresh breath too.

"hey, let me get an application" while talking on his phone, had blue jeans, tank top and flip flops on. He was extremely rude, so when i told him no, he had the nerve asking me why?

Oh, and correct me if I am wrong here, but isnt it illegal to deny giving someone an application? Because they can say you were discriminating by not giving them an application. That is what I have always been told at my jobs where I personally handed out applications, that you cannot deny giving someone an application due to equal opportunity employment.

thats true as well. as far as i can i usually scope out the prospective place i will work/get an application and take a hint from what they wear to what i should wear when i go in and get an application or go in for an interview. for instance i dropped of a resume this week, i saw that the atmosphere is the same way it is here where i still work. khakis and polo/button up, would be more than sufficient for that place as well. it depends on where u go..another example, i went to drop off an application at the adidas outlet, i know they are sports gear oriented so i wore my regular 'street' clothes, just made sure it was all ironed and clean...u have to make sure where you go of what you should wear

Even at Adidas, I still would dress up.

That's me, I am though, more comfortable in my slacks and button downs at this point than my "street clothes" for work.

I FEEL WHAT YOU ARE SAYING AND I CAN AGREE. EVEN THOUGH THE DRESS ATMOSPHERE THERE ARE BALL SHORTS, SNEAKERS AND T SHIRT, I STILL WISH I WENT AT LEAST WITH MY KHAKIS AND BUTTON UP/POLO. I KNOW WHEN I GOT THIS JOB I HAVE NOW, I CAME IN JSUT FOR THE INTERNSHIP, I CAME IN WITH A TIE, BUTTON UP, GREY PANTS...STARTED WORK WITH THE SAME STYLE OF DRESS UNTIL I WAS TEASED FOR COMING IN LOOKING LIKE AN EXEC LOL
