my girl bought me a guitar for my birthday and i want a tuner for it
any thoughts on what i should look into getting.

im learning to play but i need to have it tuned up right

no, most tuners have a built in mic...

Just get a cheap one, if you stay serious in like 1 year you will be tuning it by ear anyways. But I've always liked the analog needle ones better than the blinking lights ones like the one you posted, but they all work.

it's very VERY rare that someone can actually tune by ear and it be in the proper tuning..

i'd say about 95 percent of musicians professional or not use a tuner...

i've been playing over ten years.. and though i can tell when my guitar is out of tune.. and i can "tune it" to sound well.. never can i actually tune it to a standard E.. i'm normally a little sharp or flat.. though all strings will be in "tune" compared to the other.

I didnt mean playing a string and "oh that sounds like an E". I meant tuning to sound, like a song that you know or something. Ive been going on youtube and search "guitar tuner" and it will play every string open (some are better than others). After that, I then play corresponding harmonics to get rid of any oscillations. I get it damn close in like 2 minutes. At least as close as the non expensive tuners.

Well after about 45 mins figuring out how to exactly use the tuner. I now have a good tune to my guitar I hope. I will look into some guitar lessons soon. Til then I have 2 intro dvds to work from.

Boss Tu12 is the best ive used,but i sold mine bout a year ago...think its bout a $80 tuner.

now i use a $15 korg.

I have a Korg. I like it because it has a "flat" button. Press it once it goes down half a step. Press it twice for a full step. You can go 2 full steps down. It makes tuning in alternate keys easy (Keef Richards uses alternates a lot).

I had one of the better tuners once before, it would recognize all the notes of the scale rather than just E/A/G/D/B/E like most tuners. So if I wanted to tune a string down to "C" or whatever I didn't have to mash any extra buttons.
