IIRC it's a '96 328is, it was owned by a guy on bf.c and it was on craigslist, too. Seemed like a pretty decent car, but it has lots of miles (to me, anyways).

OP, sounds like you're already off to a bad start with the car. Good luck with it, seems as if you'll need it...

I would have gotten a m3 and left it alone.

Downgrade fo sho...You should held out for an M3, at the very least. Why? For 40 more hp, different bumpers, and thicker molding? Depending what version M3 it may even have the exact same interior lol!

Put M3 cams and valve train in it and you have 220hp engine, halfway the difference to an M3. OBD1 conversion intake manifold and will out even more out. If you're doing suspension upgrades anyways you can get something better than M3's oem setup and still be thousands ahead.

The 328's M52 takes boost far better than the M3's S50/S52 and is reliable up to 25psi with stock internals, just needs a 0.140 Cometic head gasket and v2.0 ARP studs. You can make this car a reliable daily driven 500whp yet it's capable of well over 600 stock.

For insurance purposes I'd rather have a 318/325/328 and put a boosted M52 in it with a complete high end suspension set up. Turn the boost down for 300-350whp and you have a mean road course track day play car...500whp with a GT35 and you have a sub 12 second car, 600whp with a GT40 and it's in the 10's on slicks.

Not that I know the OP's intentions but with all due respect, I doubt he is going to sink that much money into this car however, I could be wrong.

Personally, I would start with a good platform and build upon it. When it's all said and done with your hypothetical mod list and the costs associated, the M3 is just a smarter buy, IMO.

BMW over an Acura is a definite upgrade. An upgrade I hope to make soon!I can't fully take the credit for it though, the rare XD version of the Discovery [off-road rally race version] has the same painted hood. I believe the Disco I XD only came in yellow though. I'm 6'-3"+ and the seats force you to sit upright so the glare is an issue, on the hood and the windshield. When I did it years ago I'm positive I was the only silver Land rover with it but if I did it again I'd use a flat black vinyl instead of paint! Even though I did it properly and even put a thin matching silver pin stripe around the edge to make it seamless.

You can boost it your self for well under $5k, especially if you get a cast or cheaper header vs. one from 666 Fabrication that will run $1,200-1,400. ODB1 conversion and the stock DME/ECU can be tuned for multiple boost settings...or go standalone. Not a difficult process, just $$$.

downgrade?
wtf? a 'performance' honda/acura (unless its an NSX or S2k, then its more of a lateral move :) ) to a BMW is a DOWNgrade?
you guys dont know then...
it may or may not be as fast/faster, but the materials and luxury of even a base model (e36 318) is just better.
not to mention the prestige of a tuned BMW over everybody and their brother's honda... even people not in the scene, like your grandpa or neighbor think BMW > honda.

dont get me wrong, i can get down with an ITR, i can respect honda engineering, nothing against it. but honda (acura) ITR to bimmer 3 is nothing LESS than a sideways move.

I think it's a downgrade but everyone will have their opinions. At what point do facts supersede opinion? If you really think that then you're scared of the e36 and simply don't know how to drive it. Even stock the car is so neutral not to mention I'm sure the e36's you drove had broken rear trailing arm bushings. You ever driven an M3? What's the difference? 40hp and a more rigid suspension? You can buy stock m3 shocks and springs for a few hundred $$$.

I've been involved with the extreme end of both Honda's and BMW's. Put an added$15k+ into the ITR/Civic/Del Sol and you can have a car that will out maneuver the BMW. Put that $15k into the BMW...holy

That car was running 1:08's. It would take a field of mods to get an ITR within seconds of thatDude....I'm talking here about a STOCK ITR and a STOCK E36......You're throwing in a 325 with modifications to it. Move aside fan boy.

Put that $15k into the BMW...holy :eek:Damn didn't know I drove 5 different ones with the same problem. I don't understand why everyone on IA has to have sand in their vaginas when someone gives their opinion. I mean, I saw E36's ALL DAY EVERY DAY...BORING !!! ITR are rare and are becoming even more rare with all the thefts and accidents. Like I said.....I would rather drive a ITR ANY DAY than a E36 325. Don't get me wrong I love me a BMW and I've been in search of a clean E30 for a while now but I just think the ITR was better.

BMW used natural rubber for all their bushings. Natural rubber deteriorates much faster than synthetic bushings. There's a good change 4/5 or even 9/10 e36's you drive need the bushings replaced, especially the RTABS. As long as the e36 has good condition bushings it will out handle the ITR in EVERY aspect stock for stock.

If you're accustomed to FWD's then you won't be able to drive the e36 to its full potential, not even close.
