looks like either chameleon paint or like metal that has been heated to some high temps.

don't hold me to that, i'm not sure.

Those are probably titanium bolts heated like all the "cool" kids' exhausts.

sooo... you get titanium bolts and heat them? and they turn into that?
please pardon me for being such a terrible NOOB. :o

pretty much thats the only way i'd know how to do it. get a torch and hold it to them. i dont think u'd want to put ur finger on it for a while until it completely cools because i think it'd mess up what it did by putting your finger print on it

but once it cools it'll shine all pretty like that?
does it flip flop colors? ive never been into those kinda exhaust tips so i never took the time to figure out the physics of it.

thats what i figure...maybe you'd have to throw a clear coat on it..i'm not sure man. i've never done it, i just know that metal, when put to fire does turn that color.

gotcha! so it would be multi-colored once put to a flame.

its a coating
so you're saying that thats the mirage thing paint?

Pretty nice. I know heating it does that, but it never looks that good.

What do you have up your sleeves sir?

those are not really bolts.. They're water.. and the tips were dipped in oil

This is all titanium plumbing...

You can bend it, but it doesn't like it,

the weight savings from regular stainless steel or any other metal is unreal.

Let's just say a company makes a complete Exhaust manifold to muffler in titanium for a S2000, and it weighs 20 lbs. combined.

All F1 cars us it in a mixture with some other rare metal for the exhaust manifolds.

thats freakin fire. i knew about the weight reduction w/ it...was thinking maybe it served another purpose w/ 'titanium' bolts

If it's not going to be used to suffer high temperature punishment, then the bolts are meant to "Look cool"

It's my understanding that yes. You heat raw titanium to extreme temps and let it cool and the color stays.

Please explain why the heated tips are functional.

the tip color is produced from the heat of the exhaust itself. The function of titanium exhaust is WEIGHT...

doh, I read your post wrong. It's too early. I gotta go get more coffee..

I explained the real purpose for titanium a few post up.

The exhaust is not used before it is installed if it's a new exhaust. Admit it, the heated tip is just for looks. :D

depends on how it's being used.. Someone with a cool jdm tyte car with it at the V is for looks... a gutted car that needs as much weight reduction as possible... not for looks

I agree, but the latter probably wouldn't have a heat-treated tip out of the box... it would just eventually turn blue from heat, like motorbikes do.

Patrick said something about dipping metal in water and then heating it while still wet would produce an effect like that... not 100% sure of how he said he did it, but I know we had some purpled and blued piping laying around for a while that he made... it was originally just plain aluminum intercooler piping but he did something to it and made it look kinda like that. The colors weren't as intense, but the effect was definitely there.
