so i am thinking about getting one. i get it pretty cheap through my work and i have really hot to get an slr. how is it? is it worth it, being a beginner and all?

BUMP!!!! sorry if this is in the wrong section. i also wanted to find out what yall thought about the D60. i can get a good deal on both of these camera's so i wanted to see what yall had to say about them before i went through with buying one.

The d40's a great entry level slr, but if you got the extra 100 dollars... get the d60 :2cents:

i was thinkin about that. through the company accomedations i can get the d40 with kit lens for 429 and the d60 for 509 with the kit lens. call me trying to keep a small budget but if its ok to get the d40 ill go with that.

well with the d60 for 509 your getting a way better deal than the d40 for 429. sure the d40 is ok, but for that extra 80 or so dollars not only are you gonna get those extra 4 MP's, which is pretty huge seeing how the d40 is only 6.1, but your also gonna get a bunch of other improved features.

yeah, i am more then likely going to lean towards the d60. i like having the vr on the d60 as well/

well, the vr is just in the lens, most of the nikon lenses you can get the vr or non vr version of. Im not sure if the d60 comes with a vr kit lens either, i thought that was the d40x

no, it does. its the model i believe that is one of the lowest ones that comes with the vr. i just like having the option of having it on the lens from the start.

I personally would save your 100 bucks and get a D40. Megapixels don't matter, especially if your only doing pictures for the web, or small prints. I actually did a 24x36 for a friend of mine with my D40, he loves it. only other defining feature you can live without is active d-lighting, and a self cleaning sensor which vibrates really fast to shake off dust. I never had to clean my sensor other than blowing it out with compressed air or the hurricane blower (device that looks like the thing they suck the fluids out of newborns mouths with, is basically all it is). The VR lenses are nice, but if you have a tripod, no big deal. But if you got the extra 100, go for it

And as a matter of fact while im thinking about it, I would hit up ebay or craigslist for a D50, youd be able to use more lenses with it

no im not stuck on it. but through the company i get a very good deal on their camera's. im partial to canon, just cause. but i wana try a nikon.

yeah. i know about teh hurricane blower. i sell camera's for a livin at my job so i know all about them, i just have yet to get one of my own. i will be purchasing it next week for sure, but i just have to finally decide what i want to get. i was thinking the d60 just cause.

i would get a rebel xsi before i got a nikon d40. partially because i just dont like nikons, the way they are set up or anything. Ive used both. my old rebel xti was a GREAT entry level Slr. i loved it, took some pretty nice pictures with it too. then i got my Canon 40D and its a whole new ballgame lol.

eh. in all honesty i was playing with the nikons yesterday while i was at work and to me. there easier to use. i like the way the menu options are set up better then i do the cannons. dont get me wrong, i love cannons. but i would rather have something easlier to use to me.

Nikons and Canons are a lot more alike than they are different. I own a Canon, but I would just as happily snap away with any Nikon with similar features.

I disagree with the notion that megapixels don't matter. That might be true if you only use crappy lenses, but with a fast, sharp lens you'll want every bit of detail you can get.

to an extent yes. but you have to also consider the enlarging factor. its not goign to matter of you dont enlarge the picture normally above an 8x10 and especially if you are usually only going to have them on the internet.

You could make the same argument about a car. Do I need a 350 HP V6 to commute to the office every weekday? No.

The extra power (megapixels, in this case) is there for the times that you might need it.

go look up the prices on lens for the d40 and d60. remember you HAVE to use AF-S lens.

id much rather have a d50 with a low shutter count than a new d60 because of the prices of lens. look up a 50mm AF-S lens and look up and 50mm AF-D lens and look at the prices.

if you plan on buying more lens(and you will) and you have to buy new get a d90, it will save you money in the long run with lens.

thats understandable, its not a cheap camera at all.

im just some lens like the 50mm 1.8 AF-D is a lens that costs $110 and its a GREAT lens that everybody should have because for the price it will freakin blow you mind.

but with the d40/60 you have to get the 50mm 1.4 AF-S and that will run you $500. also if you are on a budget like i am with the d40/60 your choice of good used lens off nikon forums and craigslist is ALOT smaller and still expensive cause of the AF-S style lens.

thats why i ended up buying a used d50(RIP) over a new d40, the cost and availability of lens.

His D50 has 7100 clicks on it, which isnt too bad. You should be able to get at least 100k out of a D50

You can get the d40 for $409.95 with kit lens and free shipping from Bhphoto so your company isnt giving you that great a deal but the d60 is a little better deal. as it is 529.95

The XS comes with an 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6. It is a decent lens. Not super great, but still capable of good shots if you know how to work with it (plenty of light, and close the aperture down a bit, pay attention to your focus points).

That being said, it is still a kit lens (meaning that almost anything you replace it with in the same zoom range will perform better).

Whether you have a nikon or canon or sony or pentax or whatever..... the most determining factor for image quality is the lens on the camera, next are the settings you are using, third is the shot composition/subject, and fourth is the camera body.

There's nothing wrong with the XS

i used to have a d40 and i liked it alot but now use a d80. my friend has the d60 and personaly i would take the d40 over the d60.
