I'm reluctant to share this since I'm the only person in Atlanta riding to this, but this kid is to nice to sleep on. His name is Drake, and he got that fyiah! I kid, I kid. He's like Lupe, with a little Hove and Kanye thrown in. He's Wayne's protege, Drama has cosigned him, basically he's about to blow. His current mixtape is called "So Far Gone." Wayne is on half the tracks, but Drake kills him on most of them. Two tracks to look out for are "Successful" and "Congratulations". I guarantee that "Successful" will be your new riding song. "Congratulations" is sick b/c he samples "Vida La Vida" and makes it work.

Been on him for a minute, he also got this one track on the mixtape called "Unstoppable", that shit is crazy. The mixtape is real slow though, like ridin music. Also somethin' decent to play if you kickin' it with some females.

Theres this one track where he hops on the Kanye "Say You Will" beat, that shit is hard.


Also, check out B.O.B. I know he dropped that "Haterz" song, but it seems like he understands he can use club bangers to fund real skill. He has a few songs, some good smoking songs, some songs so good they're fuckin depressing if you listen to the story. He has some funny skits and shit too. The name if his mixtape is "Hi My Name Is B.O.B.(Bob)". The shit is good.

This kid and Asher Roth are the future, and with a all Yeezy produced Blueprint 3 and Lupe's new album around the same time coming this year the game will be okay.

I'm celebrating an hour in the green, so I won't go to hard.

1st, straight from Websters: protege: one who is protected or trained or whose career is furthered by a person of experience, prominence, or influence. Wayne scooped him up, so rappers not named Gille Da Kid won't beef with him because that means they are beefing with the most popular rapper today. He can also go places he couldn't before, like the VMAs where Wayne used his verse, so his career has definitely been furthered. It's pretty obvious that he's Wayne's protege going by the definition, or by the fact that Jae Millz, Wayne, and Drake himself have all said it. I'll leave that alone.

2nd, the people I mentioned all have a chance to bring hip hop back because of their broad appeal. They ain't talking about bricks, weight, straps, or any of that nonsense. They spit about life. College was 2 years ago for me, so I'd rather listen to the Beastie Boy 2.0 aka Asher Roth talk about drinking and chasing chicks than OJ da Juiceman trying to convince Atlanta that he was one of the few people who actually move major weight. Say what you want about Kanye; he literally certifiable, but the guy makes hits, not beats. The best producer alive, Yeezy, plus the best rapper alive, Hova, thats history. If that alone isn't bringing hip hop back I don't know what is.

Lastly, I don't know the particular person I mentioned that made you sure that hip hop is indeed dead, but I'll just list songs that aren't just rap songs, they're messages that transcend music.

Putting words on my monitor, are we? I never said it was dead. I said it is on it's last leg. What the hail do you mean by "rapping isn't just a fad?" No one said that either. Fads don't last 30 years, man. These are not "anthems." They're just more tracks that will fade into obscurity. Rap will still be around. Just not nearly as big as it has been in the last decade. You honestly can't tell that rap is losing it's appeal? Read my other thread where I explain my thoughts on the future of rap in better detail.

There is still alot of HIP HOP out there, like Cuddi, Drake, Bishop Lamont, Lupe, Talib, Mos, etc

RAP, like any other form of music, has become COMMERCIALIZED, so the innovation somewhat dies when that happens. I mean look at lil wayne, he ,imo, is prob one of the worst rappers around and he had the biggest album this year. His voice sucks, his beats suck ,etc. Now i have heard him on some mixtapes, and his lyrics are 100 times better than anything on his albums, but again, the MAINSTREAM wants to hear hits, club bangers, stuff that has no soul.

the last real album i bought and liked every track was get rich or die tryin. IMO that was the last album that had heart and was gritty.

You're right, I was 4 when NWA came on the scene, and I wasn't even born when "The Message" dropped, but there are these things called documentaries and book that enable me school the un-schoolable. You are inevitably talking about the sound of rap which will always be pervasive in popular music because it has been usurped by pop music artist. I am talking about the GENRE, when people decided to put the sound that blended reggae, soul, tribal beats, etc. and put it on a record (and "Rappers Delight" was the first rap record). That shit didn't blow up and become know until it hit the Discos. Of course the sound didn't come from Disco. But, for bette or for worse, it was the Disco clubs where rap was played in its infancy, and it was the death of Disco that allowed Hip Hop to emerge as a new genre. Hit up something not named Wikipedia and get back at me.

And color doesn't mean anything in rap or Rick Reuben wouldn't be one of the greatest producers of all time and em wouldn't be one of the greatest splitters.

nor "true". Even if I were to concede that I don't have your depth of knowledge in the history does not mean I don't know "good" and "true" hip hop when I see it. What I'm trying to get across to you is that I've heard most of the stuff from the 80s, own most of the stuff from the 90s, and hate most of the stuff from the last 5 years probably as much as you. But, I choose not to watch music videos and listen to the radio and getting my music from mixtapes and lesser known artist. I love Eric B and Rakim, but the Shante records are garbage. Brand Nubian, KRS-One, and Public Enemy were good, but, just like today, there was a whole lot of garbage out there. You hate on Eminem, but the guy can "rap". I didn't call him a lyricist, because he doesn't kill you with his words, it's his delivery. And I'm referring to the guy who ripped it on "The Anthem" (the King Sway and Tech version) and the guy who ate Jay-Z on his own song "Renegade". I can keep going dude. I never said everything back in rap's early days was good. Not sure where you pulled that from. And the true part. Huh? If it happened, it happened. Ergo it's true. The artists you name are, in the hip hop world, are true classics. But you've got to go back even further to reach into the depths. We're taking Spoonie G, the Disco Three, Ultramagnetic MCs, Bizzy Bee and the like. Stuff you can't find in Wiki. It's just a shame that you think my "arguments" come from Wikipedia and not from my own experiences. You not the only one listening. I posted a quick note about him in a post I made a while back. No one cared so no replies. is he the future? Nope, I think Jay Electronica is way ahead of him lyrically. Also check out P.O.S. because he's been doing it for a while and kills it on almost every track. I came across Blu not too long ago and he dropped a mixtape a while back that's getting heavy play in the ride right now. Let me know if you got some other good stuff, because I've got a ton of good rap music and always looking for more.

As far as knowing the roots of rap music, I'm only 24 so I wasn't able to live it from the beginning, but I've done my research and I've sat down and talked with pioneers of rap music. A few years back I got to know some of the people that run the Sedgwick and Cedar clothing line while I was at MAGIC. If you don't know where they got the name for their line without doing a "google search" then you don't know about the roots of hip hop. It was amazing talking to these guys and having Mele Mel there talking about how big some of the parties got.

QD, would you happen to have some old vinyl of the L Brothers or Kid Creole? I keep finding stuff but they are scratched beyond belief.
