lol GA raised the tax atleast a dollar today for every thing tobacco. average cost of a pack of Marlboro is around 5 bucks before tax. Price is supposed to go up another dollar within this month. lol im a exsmoker thank god i quit while i was ahead. GA claims this will help increase tax revenue by a few billion dollars a year to pay for things. imo i believe they will actually start loosing money.

Any evidence that Obama's stimulus plan has led to a state tax hike on tobacco products? Keep in mind, it is a state tax issue...not federal so that should clue you into how erroneous your theory is....

reason i know this is cause i work at a convenient store as a temp job til i get my license back. i help the manager with a lot of shit. so i get to see whats coming as far as most prices with most shit.

its a win/win. If people quit smoking it will have the long term positive effect on healthcare costs. If they keep smoking it will bring in huge tax revenues.

This is actually 1 area I agree with higher taxes. Cigs, alcohol, and the like have no real value in society so let them tax the hell out of it.

Exactly....

NY has been talking about or already has implemented taxes on certain "luxury" items such as soft drinks, downloading music over the internet, movies, cab rides, and a few other things I don't remember....and this was well before Obama took office....

Articles from roughly 2 years ago do not infact support your argument on the current situation. Read the dates on the articles....Furthermore...state taxes are set by the state, and not by federal officials...state and federal taxes are set separately....

Lets tax obese people for every pound they are overweight. Obesity is the #1 killer in the US, not smoking or alcohol. How about $1 tax on everything in the vending machines?

This will def. help out GA alot.

NY raised taxes on cigs last year and stand to make $1.2 billion a year because of it. A pack of Marlboros in Manhattan is $10 and Camels are around $12 per pack.

It's great for your state to make money off people who choose to slowly kill themselves.

They already are, it's called uncollected mass amounts of social security that we paid into the system. That's fine, we'll quit smoking, live long enough to collect ours, and thus the non smokers will receive less than they would have.

2nd quoted source substantiates my claim that its is solely a state issue and not one due to what is according to you, Obama's economic stimulus plan.

the Tobacco industy, PORN, Weed, alcohol etc are all BILLION dollar industrys. They can affrod to raise everything by $1 and we wouldnt really be effected.

That's quite ok with me, also. I could care less. Don't smoke! And hopefully this will prevent other people from starting, and convincing others to quit. I remember a few years ago, before we moved to GA., prices were WAY high. Me,my mom, and one of her friends went over to Philly and her friend thought $6.00 was a good deal, and that was about 8 yrs. ago!

Same goes for car insurance. You live where there are more know non insured people your rates are higher.

Companies be it health insurance, car insurance, medical care, ect. will make there money by any means necessary. Usually that means passing it off on the "customer".

Raising income taxes is not good. Taxing items of everyday purcahse is much better because that way EVERYONE pays the same amount (in some form or another).

Illegals smoke, they pay a tax
Rich people smoke, you pay a tax
Poor poeple smoke, they pay a tax

If you dont smoke, you dont pay a tax, is it discriminatory? not really in the context of things. We all pay something somehow that other poeple DONT pay. Why should you get more money back if you are married or have a kid? What about gas tax?

Weed , cigs, alcohol, porn all should be taxed heavily IMO, id rather pay $1 more a pack of cigarettes than $1000 a year in income taxes

I am in favor of this but I know it will be a big financial hit to my parents who are lifelong smokers. Dad smokes 2 packs a day and I don't think he's been more than 3 hours without a cigg since 1965. He only sleeps an hour or two at a time because he can't go that long without coughing.

If my dad smoked Marlbrough he'd probably have enough points for a goddamn Marlbrough F-1 car by now. But he smokes "Doral" and they don't give you anything (except cancer).

But hopefully it will be enough to encourage them to stop smoking. Its doubtful though, they will probably just spend find a way to pony up the extra dough for smokes. :screwy:

People will go without eating for smokes the same way ppl will spend all their money on scratch off lottery tickets which by the way, standing behind someone in line at a gas station when they are buying lottery tickets and or scratch offs is one of the most annoying things in this world.
