so I just bought a rebel XSI

its 12.2MP it had good reviews

anyone have any links to some sites for a COMPLETE n00b...

I had a really nice point and shoot for a while (kodak) the ones that looked like SLR's and i really liked the pics it took, but I replaced it with this one, because i lost the other one lol (really)

My goal is just to take some decent pics.. friends/ family, cars, etc... I've seen people take awesome pics with these cameras

I just took my first few pics with the camera and man do they suck.... This peice of shit has so many buttons and it wont even take pics sometimes its wierd.. I know i'm doing something wrong, when i put it on "full auto" mode, which I assume is the n00b mode... sometimes it wont take pics... i keep pressing the button and it only sometimes takes a pic i assume when the focus is perfect or something?

Thank you for proving the point that a good camera =/= good pics.

When it's not taking pics, it's cause it's in full auto and it's hunting for focus.

That's not so good. I'd do a lot of studying the camera you bought. Have you ever owned a point and shoot? If I were you I would have started off with a Canon Powershot S5 IS or a Canon Powershot SX10IS.

Hasan... here are some tips to becoming an IA Photog.

1. Download a Bootleg Copy of Photoshop

2. Learn how to resize your Photos. (Border optional - Timeattack theme +20 cool points)

3. Read your camera manual. Anyone words you dont understand , go to the following link

http://www.kodak.com/global/en/consumer/glossary/glossaryContents.shtml

4. Practice shooting in different conditions.

The photos look okay, but learn to shoot in manual mode.

No reason to jump straight into manual mode. Use Av (aperture priority) and Tv (shutter speed priority) modes (and pay attention to the camera settings) until you get a good idea of how to control your depth-of-field, capture motion effectively...and how both of those affect the image exposure. (don't forget about playing around with the ISO setting)

Only once you have a good familiarity with those modes would I spin that dial to full manual mode.

If the light is good, I usually leave it in Av mode because I am usually more concerned with image sharpness and depth of field (slow moving or non-moving subjects).

Good luck.

Why not? Id like to hear the reasoning youd choose to shoot a priority mode over full control.

Because he is new. I figure he'll have less bad exposures if he gets used to priority modes first. He'll have enough on his plate figuring out how to work camera properly at the outset.

I am pretty new myself. The only time I currently go full manual is in low light when I am trying to freeze the action on something moving and I have a DOF that I really like, or I'm shooting at too low a sensitivity.

Photography on the Net (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php) Is a great forum for Canon users new and old. great choice on the camera I love mine. I do recommend getting used to the Manual Mode, it will turn out the best results for you photographs (other than I never really knew what the AV & TV modes were when I got mine and have still yet to use them), also don't be afraid to look through on of the 2 manuals (English & Spanish)that were given to you w/ the camera.

Also for processing your photos all you really need is Adobe Light Room 2 :goodjob:
