View Full Version : Religion Religulous (the movie)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0815241/
Has anyone seen this? It is hilarious - there is nothing better than someone questioning religious people about their faith and pointing the obvious holes in their belief systems.
Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers to think that they do.
The irony of religion is that, because of its power to divert man to destructive courses, the world actually could come to an end.
Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking - it's nothing to brag about. And those who preach faith, and enable it, and elevate it, are our intellectual slaveholders - keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction.
The plain fact is religion must die for mankind to live. The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge in having key decisions made by religious people - by irrationalists - by those who would steer the ship of state, not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken.

The movie is extremelly good. Bill Maher is very funny, an obviously not an idiot when it comes to religion, he's done his homework. Some of his questions or comments are so unexpected, they even throw the interviewee off. I laughed just as hard the second time as I did the first.

its a great movie.
one of the funniest quotes that comes to my head right now:
"women in your culture dont seem to be as equal as they are in our culture"
"you see we have women here [in a special mosque]... They have a special corner."
the thing about the jewish inventors is halarious.
and the creationist people too.
i recommend this movie
not a bad movie, but im not gonna start on all the flaws on how he conducted his interviews, questions, and half the retards he talked to... good non the less but biased on how its filmed one sided ;)

Im actually watching it right now, again..
So i have a quick question. Im Buddhist so i have no idea, but do Christians believe in reincarnation?
So i have a quick question. Im Buddhist so i have no idea, but do Christians believe in reincarnation?
no, they believe there is an afterlife in heaven/hell; reincarnation from what i understand is you will be born again in the flesh
So when Jesus comes back, won't he be reborn in the flesh?
So when Jesus comes back, won't he be reborn in the flesh?
we are talking about Christianity; there are always exceptions to the rule

No, cause techically He never 'died'. He rose from death after 3 days, and then ascended into heaven, whole. (body and all).
His body never decayed etc.
When He returns He will just be 'in the flesh', with holes in His hands and all.

Hey I am only stating what the bible says about the issue at hand, since you mentioned christianty and a question about it was posted. At least I attempted to answer the question with what is quoted, and not spew off one or other sarcastic one-liner.
"don't worry i'm an equal opportunity h8ter; there is a reason i'm not religious. hey let me know when you find Jesus 2000+ years later still no sign of him "
That's fine, then don't be religious, but you need to stop attacking or ridiculing those who are. Just let them be.
I'm also not making any claims as to my religious beliefs. Just because I attempted to answer a question on Christianity does not necessarily make me a Christian. I may have equally attempted to answer a question on Anton Lavey.
And it hasn't been 2000+ years yet. If Jesus 'died' at 33 years old, that will make only 1976 years...... :goodjob:
And I know.. I need to learn how to quote... :)

See but that is exactly my point! They wouldn't be so defensive UNLESS you attack them!! NO one is going to walk up to you and just say, 'hey Paul.. I believe in Jesus BECAUSE......". Usually they get defensive when talks about religion come up and people attack them for their beliefs or ridicule their religion.
So what if not everyone believes in their fairly tale ending? Just let them be. They don't believe in your atheistic existentialism ending either.
In the end, there is only one truth, and we all will experience it. Whether one dies with or without hope of an afterlife is their prerogative. Let each keep to their belief and at least everyone will face death happily.....

to me the problem is not religious people, its public laws and policies that are made based on religion. And the problem that many religious people think religion = morals
Also go to maps.google.com
zoom in on your town
type "church"
and think how things would be different if each of those little red dots where clinics, stores, schools, homes, parks instead.

you can believe what you want i don't really give a shit; if i did i would be trying to convert. honestly i poke and laugh at religion b/c it is humorous; honestly you should "turn the other cheek" which is taught by most religions.
my comments are no different then some religious person spouting out about nonbelievers. i don't cry about that again i just laugh and poke fun. i don't take life to seriously b/c i refuse to live like a slave to the systems around us.

It's funny to see how uncomfortable people become when their beliefs are questioned with reason. Here are some links for those who wish to see:

You may have to try more than 1 link.

a guy goes around slapping peoples faces. women, children, dogs, men. for no reason at all. does the last guy that gets slapped follow jesus's words of "turning the other cheek" when he stops the slapper? No, he stopped the slapper from slapping again.
or a more realistic scenario:
"If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also."
Honestly, who would give that man your cloak as well after he took your tunic? It doesnt specify why the man sued you. But if he took your tunic, whats stopping him from taking other people's tunics as well? In my mind its kind of immoral to let bad things happen? Does that sound like Jesus? "Go and let bad things florish." Its not in the bible but its sure sounds like it.
But of course with small accidents, a baseball through a window or a scratch on a car could mean what was ment by "a slap on the cheek". And you can easily forgive the person whom caused that to happen. But think about it, who goes around and lets people walk all over them slapping them on both cheeks?
If you try to pull a different meaning from whats written in the bible, or pick and choose what you want to follow, even though you think the book has the words and orders of divine subjects. Then why read it at all? Its ironic how religious instituitions have meetings to discuss what should be in revised bibles. Picking and choosing what should be in it and how it should be worded. "We will put this good thing that god did in the bible, but lets leave out those bad things god tells us to do". Why not skip the whole god said it part and just have modern society come up with the proper morals and publish it into a book distributed around the world. Or they try to translate "what god said" into modern english. If your god knows ancient hebrew/aramaic can your god not learn modern english and just tell us plainly? or are those only with degrees in literature allowed into heaven?
Its just so... ridiculous.

I'm just saying, that's all. Like I said in a previous post, I don't claim affiliation to any religion. I could believe in God and Jesus, and not affiliate myself with Christianism. I just may know a thing or two about Catholicism, because that is how I was raised. Does not mean that I am automatically a Christian for life. I can change my mind like any free-willed person can.
Do I believe in a higher power? Let's just say that I have an open mind and believe that there is something bigger than me. But that does not give me the right to bash and ridicule people who believe in Buddha, Mohhamed, LaVey etc. or even people who do not believe in anything.
And I don't have to turn the other cheek, as I don't feel that you are attacking my beliefs. And I have not seen anyone spout anything about non-believers. At least not in this thread. :goodjob:
hmmmm lol at ppl comparing law and morals to religion
if the man wants to poke at religion let him you should be secure enough in your own beliefs to let it go especially when it on the internet
