I was debating with some guys at work about the tradeoffs of having a decent HP car and still being able to get decent fuel economy out of boost so we came up with a game.
Divide youre who by your mpg to see what motor has the best compromise between daily driving fuel efficiency and when-you-need-it-horsepower.
Lets just do this in a standard format:
Motor and displacement
WHP
MPG
WHP/mpg = (whp*gal)/mile
displacement/mpg = (liter*gal)/mile. This one should be converted to keep units but since this if for comparison its a minor detail.
Obviously since some of you are uberJDMskreetracers you may want to keep your whp numbers secret, just list your mpg and your final ratio :goodjob:
And dont cheat, just use your average mileage for average driving, I get ~20mpg every day but have gotten 28mpg on the highway, so I'm using 20.
I'll start:
03 STi motor, 2.0L
272whp
~20mpg
13.6 hpgal/mile
10.0 Lgal/mile
Lets see how this compares to some of the high HP hondas, V8s, and rotaries. Lower numbers show a better compromise for a daily driving HP machine.

There are a number of factors that will make this a little off though. awd/fwd/rwd....the horsepower numbers are different such as a higher horsepower awd would equal the power of a lesser rwd/fwd car. The actual horsepower number itself would be different cuz people have dynoed on different machines.
Also saying that lower number show a better compromise doesn't really work cuz someone putting 120 down could be getting 30 mpg and just destroy everyone by getting this "lower value".
What's considered a good power value?

Might want to go power to weight ratio instead of just hp
Example: A 225hp 5.0L mustang vs. 220hp Exige S
...then what about torque...

It was just a rough comparison, I know the whp will vary 20-30% depending on the dyno.
The way I pictured it going would be that you would have, on one extreme, your average Honda making ~140whp and getting 30mpg pulling around a 4, and on the other extreme, a Ferrari of sorts making 400whp with 10mpg, overall ratio around 40.
Your factors of varying drivetrains will show up in the mpg results since AWD gets worse mileage than FWD or RWD. Similarly the weight is built in because mpg is a function of weight.
I'd think this comparison will really favor turbo cars because I know a few people running ~360whp and still pulling 18-20mpg. He'd pull an 18, which I would consider even more efficient since he's pulling more power and using about the same amount on a daily basis.
Anything less than 10 is probably going to be something like a hybrid or POS honda thats so slow its not worth driving.

Are you going to put number of cylinders into this too? Ask that because I put 263 down on a Dyno Dynamics and im getting right around 20 mpg....which is basically the same as you. I also have 2 more cylinders and a higher displacement than you

last part confused me lol so it may be incorrect for what you want me to do i did 4.6/17
03 cobra motor, 4.6L
457 rwhp
~17mpg (25%hwy, 75%town)
26.88 hp/gal
.27 l/gal

f20c 2.0L with boltons
approx. 210whp
23mpg (75%highway, 25%city)
9.13hp/gal
not sure how to get the final number.

'02 Impala 3.4L that has gone through hell, literally
180hp, from Wikipedia, I'm probably pushing about 140hp
25mpg (I've gotten around 31mpg on long trips)
7.2hp/gal
Not exciting, but it will give you a base where you can compare against a bland pharmaceutical rep or something.

someone else can do that, you don't need those random calculations to answer the title of the thread.

295hp (crank)
mpg ~25 I get almost 30 hwy
The other calculations are dumb.. Its MPG, meaning, Miles per (/) Gallons, meaning, M/G
And we are making it Liter * Gallons / Miles? L*G/M
So we are getting the Liters * Gallons per Miles?
How many Gallons per Mile to I get? What do I call this? My GPM!!!!! jee, now, im going to multiply it by my engine size! What a genius thought!
Or further more, mmm my LiterGallons.. Lets multiply these two completely different volume measurements, one in metric, the other imperial, and make this genius number and divide it by a imperial measure of distance! Then we will see who is dumb enough to pull out a calculator and punch it in!!!!!!
YAY!!!!
Nope not doing it!

I do mostly hwy! but it isn't 25.. but w/e..
Government and corporations can inflate values, so can I damn it!

Nice attempt at humor jackass. The units dont really matter, if I wanted I would have included a conversion factor to get the units straight but as is people bitched about having to do any sort of math.
Its just a comparison, if you're too dense to comprehend the units I used, just do the math and forgot about the units. The end result basically is volume squared/miles. How bout you multiply your end result by ~3.78 to get L^2/mile, or multiply the end result by .264 to get gal^2/mile.
Oh no, 11th grade science calculations and unit multiplication :goodjob: Its people like you that cant figure out mortgage payments as well. . .
This was supposed to be a way to compare cars as a package, motor/drivetrain included.
a/(b/c) = ac/b in other words, ac = LitterGallons! :lmfao:
I was just being a jackass and found that the "LitterGallons" thought that poped into my head was funny.. So I shared it..
Not too dense to comprehend.. The Liters is just a measure and its true, it doesn't matter for this sake because it is just a engine size determinant..
Are you also going to say that I can't read? You clearly stated it in the OP that the unit should be converted as well as Displacement/MPG
Oh, and I know how to do my mortgage :goodjob:
Reading back my previous post I see how I came off.. maybe slightly as a Clown and a Jackass, I could'nt sleep and might of been under something..
But, as a final note and since we are avoiding calculations.. All we need is HP and MPG.. That is "power" and "efficiency".. Whether it is from a 3.0L or a 6.0L is irrelevant.. right?
There are a lot of measures out there to compare cars.. hp/liter, m/g etc.. etc...
These on the other are not common, because they are useless.. I just don't see what you are accomplishing with this formula's result..

32mpg, 160 hp
sexy.
I am not trying to insult you but if I was stuck in a Honda and only had 160hp, I would be upset to only get 32mpg. Is this combined? My M3 was getting 28mpg highway, 22mpg combined with 290hp, and it was spinning 3500rpms at highway speeds.
If I am going to have a city car, it damn well do better then my track car. That is why I think the 09' Carrera S is amazing.

There is no real life answer to the OP's question. One cannot compare cars based on power/fuel economy. To elaborate, you can have a 18 year old kid and an 80 year old grandmother behind the wheel of the same car and have two completely different results due to driving habits.
The only way to find an answer to this question is to put the car(s) on a dyno and datalog both power and fuel usage rate. By comparing the fuel usage rate at peak power you can get a snap shot of "best power/fuel consumption", not overall.
