dunno if this is the right place for this or not but ooh well here goes.

I finally decided i wanted to go to school for FF/EMT and got in today. They said i need to get turnout gear to use during school. I plan to try to find some on ebay. but was wondering if there are any stores around gwinnett/gainesville/cumming where i could try some stuff on to get a feel for size.

Best bet is to go to EMT school first then try to get on with a fire dept not vice versa Turn out gear is not cheap and it may be too damaged to wear. it is the only thing that protects your ass from the fire. Check out the EMT school you can go to medix but the state wont help you pay or you can check out Appalachian tech or any of the other local tech schools and you can actually use something called the hope grant and have the state pay for it.

yea i went to medix...not a bad school, and now i am trying to get on with dekalb fire...turnout gear is expensive...i have seen it for about 1500$ for everything...

I am a paramedic and due to the shit the economy is in I am having a hard time getting on with a Fire dept, though I do have some interviews coming up with Dekalb and City of Smyrna

What school are u going to? That is weird for them to ask you to get your own gear..especially if they are doing life burn and stuff. Usually the company or school are the one who are gonna supply the equipment for insurance and safety purposes. If I were you, I wouldn't get my own gear until u are actually a firefighter..

Gd luck.

im going to lanier tech in oakwood. the emt program is only offered in the fall so im doing my fire classes now to get them out of the way. i get pell grant so i get paid for school. and they make you get your own gear because of the cost. i have been thinking of getting new gear because while im in school im gonna volunteer on the weekends here in lumpkin county just to get some exp.

Ask them whether they are doing any live burn.I don't see the point of getting a gear when u don't even have a job/volley. My advice is, if you really wanna be a volley, sign up for it..ask them abt the gear situation...Gear are not cheap as well as it has to be nfpa compliance.U can't just get it off ebay unless u get if for ur personal workout. It still sound stupid though for them to ask u to get ur own gear just for the school.

Waitasecond...what Department are you joining that makes you buy your own turnout gear?

That's crazy as shit.

I've been fighting fire for four years and never came outta pocket unless it was something extra I wanted.

Dude...most Departments will train you. No need to go to school for it. And not to mention they'll train you to be an EMT. Do your research when you apply.

i applied in gwinnett county because of their "rookie" school and they said because of the economy their only hiring people with previous exp. and none of the counties around here have training schools. just tech schools.
