im contemplating trading my e30 for a RUNNING 2002... is it a bad idea?

I think 2002's are dope but trading a e30 for it is pushing it. It would have to be in gooood shape.

well, theres alot of good mechanical condition ones with some cosmetic issues, and the owners want what i think i could realistically get from the e30 at this point which is around 2500...

not talking about one specifically...

just imagine one that runs well, has decent interior, maybe some surface rust and needs other random cosmetic stuff, like paint, trim, etc.

ohh..well idk not..what kind of condition is your e30? 2002 is pretty badass...i seen one that goes for $2000 not running and needs alot of work.

the ones i saw on cl today were going for 1600-2500, all running but not in good shape cosmetically.

the e30 is decent, just needs some tlc. needs a new fender and bumper, alignment, etc. nothing crazy. it has m3 bushings, straight pipes, 110k miles on engine, stg2 clutch, msd ignition.

NO I would not want to daily drive one. Nor would I want to daily drive this 914 i'm looking at, but until my car is done...why not? It's really fun driving a vintage car around, but I wouldn't want to do it forever. However some really arn't that bad. This 914 will cruise at 100 without a swat all the way to New Orleans just like my buds 09 C300 haha, and when the weather is nice i'd much rather be in the beat up Porsche.

dude cars like that can be fixed with your eye closed. There is nothing to break. And please as long as the carb is freshly rebuilt, and it's nicely running, it's going to be so easy to maintain.

Thighs

even if they are well built, things break with age.

take old beetles for example. the build quality was great but they just arent reliable anymore at all.

my first car was a 1972 super beetle. Anything could be fixed on the car in an few hours time for less than 50 bucks. Anything on the entire car... Floor boards rust, cut them out, weld in new ones. 20 bucks and a Saturday.

The thing never broke anyhow.

Jesse if you are going to spend $2500 or even $2000, I'd recommend a 914. Mid-engine feel, will do 120mph easy and handle's extremely well. Much cooler than an 02 if you ask me and if you plan on keeping it for awhile a Subaru 2.5 swap would be quite fun.
Keep in mind anything you buy is going to go up in value if you fix it up or just take care of it. If someone is offering you a trade for your blowed up car, and it's a running 02', DO IT. With a proper paint job those things are going for a good bit these days and old guys with there M6's and what not will pay for some nostalgia.

Well an 02 is a better investment then your car. Instead of mods for your car if you say...restored the 02, you'd have more money coming out of it when you sell it and that's nice when it comes time to buying a new car

I currently Daily Drive a 1976 2002. They are good cars.

Here is what has gone wring with mine since I got it.
Broke 2 rocker arms (Old age, original rockers)
Broke Transmission output flange (My fault, easily preventible)
Had to replace alternator connection plug (20min)

On the upshot,
They are a blast to drive, very direct feel, good throttle response.
good gas mileage (I get about 26-27 on average, with some spirited driving mixed in)

Here are a couple pointers if you are looking for one:
Buy any year but '73, there were a lot of inherent problems

find one that has as many upgrades as possible, b/c unlike hondas, there are no sketchy ebay parts to install.

Get one with a WEBER Carb!!!!! (b/c you can;t afford one with FI)

All in all it will be better that the e30, because there is less to go wrong. Don't be afraid, come join the old BMW Dark Side.

I wasn't arguing about anything silly, I'm saying you can repair them with the simplest items to at least get you home.

The cars are cheap and easily maintained. A short shift kit for a beetle is under $3.00, lol.

My take on the 2002. Definitely a badass car if done right. Assuming it is on the stock motor then have 2 other cars to possible drive.

If it has say an M20 then you could probably daily it. They are like british roadsters. Drives for 3 days fine and then suddenly it won't start. Sits for an hour and fires right up like nothing ever happened.

With that said the e30 is a LOT better car than an 02. BY FAR. They are becoming more and more rare to find one in decent shape. THen cut out all the big bumper ones and you really are searching for a semi rare car.

Get or keep the e30. Put work and passion into it and you will be rolling.

If it's gonna be your DD then I would not. If anything breaks you can't just go down to the parts store or junkyard to pull it. We are talking about a 30+ year old car... Things are gonna go wrong.

i wanna m20 swap one.Not when Erin's setup was available back then with a conservative 330whp...it's an extremely lightweight and small engine with a lot of potential. 1439/2000's blue 2002 with Erin's SR20 would have been a killer car!

Everyday I debate why i'm doing an M52 with a turbo when I could have the same power for less money with a normally aspirated LS6 & 6-speed that probably weighs 100lbs less. 400hp all aluminum V8 in an e30? Game over.
