View Full Version : North Korea Scraps Treaties

Communist North Korea has said it is scrapping all military and political agreements signed with the South, accusing Seoul of hostile intent.
The South's government had pushed relations "to the brink of a war", the North's cross-border relations body said on state media.
One agreement scrapped is that covering the maritime border in the Yellow Sea.
The two countries' navies fought bloody skirmishes in the area of the de facto border in 2002 and 1999.
"All the agreed points concerning the issue of putting an end to the political and military confrontation between the North and the South will be nullified," the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said.
It said that the situation on the Korean peninsula had reached a point where there was "neither way to improve [relations] nor hope to bring them on track".
The North has stepped up rhetorical attacks on the administration of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who has promised to stop the free flow of aid to the North unless it moves to end its nuclear weapons programme.
The two states are still technically at war since their conflict more than half a century ago.
The naval clashes of and 2002 and 1999 left six South Koreans and, reportedly, dozens of North Koreans dead.
So far the BBC is about the only network to have picked up on this, seems like it happened only an hour or so ago (0100 Zulu). NK isn't exactly known for keeping promises, and I can't find anything that gives any indication as to whether this is more serious than normal or not.
Anyone have any other information?

I hope this is resolved without blood shed, and quickly!
Well, North Korea is no longer afraid of the U.S. so it can do what it wants and we won't be able to do anything about it. Unless we want another World War.
How AWESOME what we got ourselves in.

the matter is going to get worse as Kim Il Jong is dying and the one taking over his place is going to be the 20 something year old son. That son is less capable then anyone on this planet. Seriously I get nervous as I keep reading the news on South Korea and North Korea.

This will obviously be Obama's first real test. I hope he has more balls that Clinton did.

This world DOES need another World War. That would take care of the crowding problems, the food shortages, and hopefully most of the worlds dictators.
I think the US should fire the first shots with a few dozen cruise missles into N. Korea.

So far they are about even, but Obama has yet to even be tested so we will see.

We should have been there a decade ago but we did have a puss for a president. Thats beside the point though. Even if Bush didnt go in when he did, most likely we would have been there by now anyways.
Not even going to respond to the World War comment.

I agree, I was not saying anything about Obama, because it is unknown..

Bush #1 should of finished the job.. We should have never gone back either way, I have been against Iraq since day 1 and will continue to feel that way..

Why not? That is the only thing that got us out of the last depression. The massive amounts of spending and manufacturing immediately afterwards paid our entire debt caused by the war, to include the billions we sent to Europe and Asia for rebuilding into the 50's.

I agree, he should have, but he pussed out in the face of European critism. Clinton should have finished the job at several points during his presidency, but also pussed out in the face of European critisism. All the while those same Europeans were profitting huge sums of cash from Oil for Food and selling them weapons. I support Iraq and I supported Bush mainly because he was the first President since Reagan that didnt run and hide in a corner every time the Europeans got on their high horse. Whether you agree or not, he did what he thought was right no matter what approval polls said. That is something Clinton and Obama dont have the balls to do.

Fudge NK, the whole population has been manipulated and brain washed. Few have common sense and want freedom so bad.

North Korea is pretty much a paper tiger... their people aren't educated so much as they are brainwashed to follow the leader. If youve ever read any of the accounts of people who have been there and experienced it, North Korea is just not all there.

Charles Jenkins wandered over the border in a drunken stupor in the early '60's. He was held against his will in North Korea for 40 years and forced to teach English to their spys... but then the spies started getting found out... because of the thick southern accents they learned from him. :lmfao:
Another time Jenkins talks about being surrounded by at least 10 guards pointing guns at him. "I knew they weren't going to shoot, because they would be shooting through me and hitting each other". :lmfao:
the last two postings above mine make more sense than anything else on this page...
other than the picture of the Hydrogen bomb going off over the Bikini Atol... freaking sweet picture. :goodjob: [adds as desktop background]

I dont even know if they could handle freedom if they had it. None of them have ever experienced any measure of freedom and it will scare many of them into fighting to keep the evil they know.

Do you really think that they would pick communism over Starbucks and Walmart? I hate Walmart with every last fiber of my being and even I can't stay away from there. :ninja:
But seriously, in Jenkin's book he tells of how theres a huge black market in American/European media/culture. Just about every home in North Korea has a Betamax copy of Michael Jackson's Thriller hidden somewhere. :lmfao:

As hard as it is fathom for us, who grew up with unlimited freedom, it is just human nature to be afraid of what you dont know or understand. Freedom is a completely unknown concept to them and it would not be embraced easily there. Look at Russia after the communist party broke up. People had no clue how to act and the country really did fall apart.

I think as it still stands, we don't actually know if they have full nuke capability so for us to fire a few cruise missiles or launch a few nukes over there would cause a world war... one of which I definitely hope to never see in this day in age.
I think this can basically go right back to the movie "Crimson Tide" with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman... If you haven't seen it, please check it out, it's a great watch but even though it was done quite a while back... the premise of the storyline is freaking scary as hell. Definitely something that I would want to avoid.
Bottomline, there are no winners in a nuclear holocaust.
