There's nothing wrong with taking a bunch of shots to figure out how&what the camera will do with different settings and different subjects... but even if you are shooting everyday stuff like clams or trees then you should find a way to make the subject interesting or appealing. Wierd angle, funny exposure, zany colors.... something, anything! Think outside the box, man!
