So I was thinking about buying my girl a laptop for V-Day. I was going to get one that Best Buy had last week, Compaq for $350, but the Toshiba is now here:

Yeah the laptop market is falling quickly right now. I would say yes given its quality versus it price. Its not bad ass or anything but decent.

i don't see how they can sell laptops this cheap. it seems like there has to be something wrong with it. or there's some feature that you're going to realize you need one day and go "damn... that's why it was $400"

like it won't have fucking USB ports or something lol.

i mean that technically has better tech specs than the $1400 macbook i just bought. $400 sounds good to me anyday. so what if your PC will be eaten alive by viruses in a month.

i mean this:

Memory Size*
2048MB

is kinda shady, but it's all upgradable i think.

Yeah man get it and then put about 4GB of ddr2 ram in it and a better graphics card and you would have a descent computer. The 160gb hard drive is a little bad but it depends on what you are going to use it for. Are you using it for gaming or work?

People who buy macs (that aren't art inclined) are just too stupid to maintain/use a PC. =/

OP: Good buy, go for it.

eh don't want to start a PC/Mac fight, but i've been using mac for about 4 years now and from what i've seen there is not a single PC out there that has been running as long as my ibook G4 and still be as fast as it was the day it came out of the box. I've never had to do ANYTHING to it. no virus scans, no cleaning off the hard-drive... nothing... it just fucking runs. that's not really my main reason for going mac though. i really like the music/photo programs they have to offer vs. most of the pc equivalents.

but to get back on the point... you'll never find any new mac for $400 so windows based companies doing something right... there's going to be a lot of new college students that will choose a $400 computer over something far more expensive anyday. and the OP's computer seems to be a really good deal. it has most of the necessary tech specs for everyday use and if he takes care of it as you've stated, it should be a winner.

It runs, but will it run Crysis?

it's pretty good deal. i got a toshiba similiar to that 1.5 years ago for the same price. i'm just now boosting my memory to 2GB. so it sounds good to me.

i have the Toshiba Satellite. It's been very reliable. I have had no problems with it and I use it every single day.

btw, i think i have 6 USB ports.

it would be a great deal if it wasnt a toshiba. They are shit. I would avoid like the plague. Anyone thats worked on repairing computers will tell you the same. If you want a nice laptop I have an HP nc6400 i'd sell for 400. PM me if you want details.

Any computer built for gaming specifically (waaay faster and have better video cards and such than a basic PC)

Good luck d-loading mods and plugins for your ps3 games lolol.

I mean, I've got a PS3 and 360 as well, but I prefer the FPS feel of a mouse and ASDF.

Personally if your GF is not going to be gaming or watching HD movies get her a netbook.

I have an Msi wind. Personally it one of the best things I have ever bought. It small and lite. HAs a decent battery life. It perfect for typeing word documents and surfing the web. Your girlfriend will thank you in the long run for getting her a lite laptop.

This is what I would buy her.

This is what I would buy if you want the best netbook coming out:
