Cool. Isn't it fun to learn stuff like that? I am in an intro photog class right now, but we only take pics. Photoshop is a whole separate class.

Here is my flickr www.flickr.com/photographs/tracy_shayhorn

You should get one. There is also a cool little forum that a few members from here on on www.atlshutterbugs.com it's a cool place to share and get input.

i'm really enjoying it right now. i don't know much about ps so it's good for me. i would say if you knew a lot about it, you might not like it lol.

there aren't really any higher level classes than this intro class, so that's kind of a bummer.

i was just thinking
photoshop in a photography class is soo wrong.

two separate things. if you teach them both at the same time, people fall into the, i wil fix this in PS syndrome

well he just wants us to understand it. he mostly wants us to learn to create good pictures, but he also wants us to understand what photoshop can do for you. it's a DIGITAL photography class i guess i should have said lol.

Though i understand that it is a Digital Photography class i fully understand where YokotaS13 is coming from.. A photography class period should be teaching you about getting the most out of your camera to create great images the first time.. If you learn things like this now, you will always have that click in the back of your head that says "I will just deal with white balance, composition and other factors when i post precess it".. Its all good though, make the best of it and learn as much as you can, shit i would..

i definitely understand the purist point of view as well. it makes sense to not use it as a crutch.

my professor feels the same way and understands both sides. he emphasizes that a picture should be taken right the first time, but there are some things in the post-processing field that you just simply cannot do without an editing program. the things i have shown should have been taken behind the lens, but he wants us to be familiar with the program for future projects. the class is weighed heavily on composition and subject placement. those things are really not "photoshoppable" if you will lol.

what does a class like this cost?

it's about $300 i believe. the GA lottery pays for me to take it though lol

what the hell is gsc?

Gainesville State College. i thought you just hadn't noticed the post.

more like fake depth of field

Mr. Clean
02-05-2009, 10:34 AM
hey i can do that too... it was just to show the effect in PS

the behind the lens version:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg194/jmoo711/DSC06051.jpg

all this whole thread is, is just to show that we're learning to fake certain things. such as if i took a previously taken picture and wanted to enhance it later, now i could. this wasn't a thread to debate how to use a camera. i know the basics of camera use and how to take still and pan shots. i also know how to adjust depth of field on the lens.

correct!

DOF is like the sharpies
Bokeh is my picture.

DOF is easy, Bokeh takes nice lenses.

If all they taught you in your photography/photoshop class was how to select stuff and use the blur/gaussian blur then I'd get my f'in money back.

Wrong, Depth of Field just means what IS in focus, and Bokeh means what's out of focus. Both pictures have both, some is just real, and some is fake.

Bokeh (Bow-kay) is a photographic term meaning the areas outside of the depth of field, it is based of the Japanese word for "blur" which is Bo-Ke.

YokotaS13

btu they are applied in two ways

when you have a distinct difference such as that marker pic, it is referred to as DOF becuase you are illustrating something that is a depth of field situation

bokeh is more like this
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3431/3190376030_c7c3f86ccd.jpg

dof
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3506/3189529539_5d60e49f1d.jpg

but yes, both use the same technique, but are applied in different ways.

Tarzanman

what you said makes no sense. 'bokeh' is a japanese term that refers to how depth-of-field makes a photo look as an effect. Period.
