Anyone have experience with these? How reliable are they? I always worry about front engined Porsche's after my friend had a 944 that cost $$$$$$$$$ to maintain (sure a 928 is worse).
I know they can be made to be pretty quick, and were the shit when they came out.
Specific one I am looking at is an 85 928S 5 speed with under 100k miles.

1. Porsche parts are not cheap.
2. People like to throw Chevy V8s into them.
3. Front engined Porsches do have good potential. I've seen 944s done for a pretty good price.

True.
But I would just want a Porsche to be all Porsche. From what I read the V8's in 928's respond nicely to mods, and can make some good HP on a small boost application. If I get one it will remain stock anyway lol.

I know friends/family who had a couple. They never said anything about the cost being to bad. Then again I never thought 944/951 maintenance expensive. My mom had a 85.5 944 and 951 for several years.

Simon, Kev had one for like 2 years. It was his first car and it was an 1983 S. First car I did lots of stupid shit in on the street. If I bring back the memories I can remember teachers and security guards running out to yell at us while we darted away in the biggest burn outs I'd ever seen as we laughed our asses off while they yelled and stared in astonishment. I don't even want to talk about the "ralle racing" we did up at the lake house... Great cars but can be electrical nightmares...
His sunroof self destructed itself, the windows took a good 25 seconds to roll up, gauges rarely worked, and eventually IIRC it dropped two or three cylinders and needed a head gasket replacement and he pretty much sold it as a parts car. Although, when you look at it his DD was a 83' GT style car that was 50k new in 83' and it still held up well and it wasn't in the "best" condition to begin with. He still swears by it though, claiming it was easy to work on and all simple fixes. I don't really know about that one.... He almost got a newer 928 GTS not too long ago which proves how much he loved that car.
Anyhow, considering that car was more abused then any other car i'd ever been in in my life i'd say it did pretty well for 120,000k at the end of its life. We autocrossed it at xtreme measures LOTS and he just straight up beat the shit out of it and he didn't care if the engine was cold because that thing was over revved and floored every time he started moving
Anyway, I'd recommend getting it. The weight distribution is near perfect and they are pretty quick. 85' was the first year of the 32 valve design 5.0 and IIRC they are capable of 160mph and are around 5.4 seconds to 60 w/ a 14 flat ish 1/4 mile. 85' was the first year the U.S really got a 928 that was comparible to the Euro spec model (w/ 288hp)... It's just a shame the earlier U.S Spec models were so de-tuned. I think Kev's made 239bhp compared to 315 for the Euro but Porsche still claimed it was the fastest producation car out in 83 with a whopping 146 mph top speed lolol

I would much rather have a 944 Turbo over the 928.
