View Full Version : Tech: Installing door molding.

When I bought these 88-89 moldings from Dare, he informed me that the clips that hold the molding to the door are no longer available. The clips for the fender and quarter panel were intact but all the door ones were gone.
So, time to get creative. I had some of the fender and quarter moldings from my car that still had the clips in them. These clips use the same size square hole in the body to hold the molding on.
I fabricated these clips holders from 1/16th aluminum I had in the shop. You remove one of the ends of your molding, either end will work.
Slide these holders in and pop the clips in the groove.
Then they snap right onto the car nice and tight. I was real happy with the result. I ran some blue painters tape down the middle to see how they look. I might rock that for a while...
You can also see in the pic how straight I got the moldings. Just used a small deadblow, an extension, and patience. You can see how they used to look in the last pics.

Hope I was able to help someone who is or will run into this problem.

Thanks Dare, I still havent finishing the ones for my car. I got lazy and stopped. That I still need like 3 or 4 of the actual clips.

Hey hold on you can get the clips for the small molding but not the long?

Did I read that right or you are just using over?

I really need to find that thread where they give a part number from napa for a direct cross reference.

Thats what Dare told me when I bought them. I didnt bother looking any further into it. I just used the clips from the short moldings on the clip holders for the door pieces.

I havent heard a joke directed at my car since we did the 118 octane fuel test a couple weeks ago. New base was 54 and I made 58 after. Pretty pathetic. But they know I mean business with the swap so I dont get it too much anymore.

You can still get the "clips" but not the "clip holders"

I grab some of the holders from a sedan thinking they all were the same, but I was wrong. So Im going to dremel them down and make them work.
