Yeah, I'd vote GT-40 for the first american supercar. I dont know anything at all about these Vectors but they look to be made mid-80s.

I consider the GT40 to be a British car.

It was designed by Lola using the Lola GT as a base.
The prototype, MK1 and MK2 were built in John Wyers shop in England.
80% of them are right hand driver.

It wasn't till Carrol Shelby did the car that it had American in it. The Mark IV was an all american GT40 though.

Oh, and then there are the cars that came even before that.

British car again. Remember that the car is based on the AC Ace. It even had a British engine at first.

Shelby went to GM before he went to Ford for motors. The later cars could be seen as a split between England and the US as some of the cars were Shelby branded cars and were put together in Dean Moon's california hanger.

I always thought the Ford 260 V8 was the first Ford motor but after watching Victory By Design "Ford", i learned Shelby put a Ford Zepher OHV Inline-6 first. This deal with Ford came because of Henry Ford II's "Total Performance" program.

The Mark III Gt40 was a street car made in very small quantities.

On the other hand, after 1968, the Ford GT40 classification by the FIA was a production Sportcar because more than 25 had been built in a 12 month period. (This was later exploited by Porsche with the 917). This allowed the GT40 to race with the 289 (5 liter) instead of what the prototypes ran (3 liters limit). So in that sense, a GT40 was streetable and looked like a street car as well.

In 1969, Corvette had the ZL-1, 3 built, 1 destroyed by GM.

I think the ZR1 was 1970-1971 (Not sure about '72)

yea i knew in 1969 there was a camaro ZL-1 that ran low 13s,high 12s off the showroom floor,so guess the ZL-1 vette was 69.

Im currently trying to find a website i used a couple years ago that listed all these rare cars. The Baldwin motion and Yenko was the majority of the stuff but they also had those rare 1 offs like the 427 Shelby GT500.

I think it had Corvette in the site name but they really went onto detail about all those cars. ugh, i gotta find it.

Good find. One of my favorite books is American Muscle which goes over some of the cars from the late Otis Chandlers collection. Its incredible cause he bought them before they were worth the incredible values they now bring. After his death, the collection sold for $36 million.
