View Full Version : Emissions? SERIOUSLY!?!?

I'm back. It's that time again. Only this year...I DIDN'T FUCKIN' EXPECT TO BE BACK!
Many of ya'll know the story, back in June, bought 06 Mustang GT from the dealership, bought it used, had some aftermarket stuff done (including exhaust and intake, and tune via a little tune-in-the-box from Xcalibrator).
I went to get the emissions done real quick before bringing it out here to California (I'm military, the car's in georgia, and I don't think I'll have enough time to get it out here and get an "out of area" waiver for it before they charge me late fees) Bottom line, I need to get emissions done. I haven't done SHIT to the car since I bought it. It failed emissions today. WTF. "Reason: You car's computer is not ready" or some bullshit like that. Emissions place suggests driving it a week or two and bring it back. 1) Why the hell is it "not ready?" It's been driven, it hasn't been flashed or reset in a long time...wtf. 2) Isn't the dealership supposed to pass a car through emissions before they can sell it, and/or aren't they supposed to fix it if it doesn't? It was a major dealership...not a hole-in-the-wall place. 3) I don't have another "2weeks" to get this shit straight. It's not due for like a month, but I've gotta deal with the military's travel program, as well...
Any thoughts, suggestions, help, concerns?

Buy a code scanner and look at the readiness functions.

lol you just need to drive it for like 30-50 miles. Thats it, see OBD2 looks for on board sensors and stuff to see if you pass emissions.
well to keep people from simply resetting the battery and clearing the codes so they can pass, there is READINESS time built it.
Basically means drive the car around for a few miles to make sure it has time to gather feedback from all the sensors.
30-50 miles, and retest, youll be fine
EDIT: If the car has sat for a long time, it could have gone into reset mode, and acted like the battery was killed or something, especially with how cold its been its not uncommon to see voltage drop so low that it loses power to the ECU.
Id reset the battery and run off 50 miles on it

^ exactly. Had to do that with my black civic. Battery died and since I never drive it, it failed for the same reason. Drove it for about 35 miles and it was fine. Tested and passed.

Just a thought...could the tune that was put on the car cause it to do that?
Or is it possible the o2 was disconnected when the exhaust was put in?
Could either of these cause the "not ready" bullshit? Or would it give a "failed sensor" or something?

NOT READY means NOT READY. As long as there is no CHECK ENGINE LIGHT it just means run off more miles so the ECU can get more feedback before you can get it emissions tested.
Run off more miles on it, and DO NOT SHUT IT OFF and go get it tested

Hey, man! Watch your attitude! Just cuz you own this place doesn't mean you're shit! :D LoL!
Just making sure I have a clear understanding and eliminating possibilities.

Yeah, haven't seen a CEL in months when I put a bad tune on it. I'll tell the girlfriend to do what you said in the PM.
Ya'll rock.

had to drive my civic like 75 miles 2 years ago when i replaced catalytic convertor. if you unplug the o2 sensor, i guess it resets the computer.
so yeah.. what he said ^^^

My car's registered on the edge of cherokee. Damn my mom. If she lived like...I don't know, 2more miles north, I wouldn't have to deal with this shit.

Hey Mike just to correct you, there is no set mileage for the test drive. Some are quicker than what you have mention, and some have taken more than 60 miles. I know first hand from my days @ Honda Mall of Georgia. Its a good average but they need to have the scan tool in the car and have another person watch to see when ever the readiness codes go to Ready.

What a horrible design. I lose my 20$ cuz I'm taking a shot in the dark that it's ready to be tested...

if you cant get it to go ready remove the tune and drive around with the stock one

Just may do that...just hope the bastard at the test station doesn't get a "not ready" again, and make that count as my "free 2nd run"

I need help with my emissions also, but I am over due by two weeks to get my tag. MIL is on and I do not want to put anymore money into the car, but I will probably have to. This car has been a pain in my wallet since I bought it.

Ur gonna hate the brutal CA standards. OH is emission free BISH :D

I'm exempt. Car is registered in GA. As long as I pass in GA, I don't have to pass in CA. Military specialty. Also, if I can't get the car to pass tomorrow via driving it around and going to the emissions place. If it doesn't pass, fuck it, I'll get the car out here to Cali and get a letter from the C.O. saying it's out here in Cali, and I won't have to deal with the damn thing... Unless for whatever reason once it has a "fail" on record (if this counts as a fail?) it HAS to pass before they'll renew a tag? Anyone know about that?

Also, talked to the guy, he said he drove it for like 30-45minutes and never turned it off...just went straight for the test. In addition, the car passed EVERYTHING but the readiness test.
The car sat for probably roughly a week...then my buddy drove it for about 4-5days, and then went for the emissions test and performed the test as described above.
Don't know if this helps anything, just throwing out more ideas...

Returned to emissions place yesterday. Car failed readiness, again. Car was driven solid hour prior to the emissions place arrival, and was not turned off. Place took it as my second attempt.
Any help appreciated.

Seems like it's your tune then. Reset it to stock maybe? Sounds weird that even after enough driving it wouldn't pass readiness.

You need to see what sensors/systems are not ready. The printout they give you should have it on there...

I'll see if I can get a look at it.
I'm also hoping to hear back from a select two persons who...haven't replied yet... :ninja:

Not completely true.
For as far as the mustang goes, drive it. I doubt you had the same problem i did.

What didn't pass readiness?
you are allowed to fail one thing.
was it your cat?, your o2 sensor, 02 heater? the failed report should show you what failed. You should have askerd for them to run a readiness test for you before they used your second chance....

Alright, called up my buddy and asked him about what exactly failed. According to the test results, it said the on board computer is not ready to test, it has no collected enough data. I know the car was driven a good week before the test. I'm really questioning that tuning program.
I'm having my buddy look for the tune-in-a-box so as to remove the tune and return the tune to stock. Have the car driven a while. Would it be wise to do that or take it back to the dealer I got it from and tell them what's up?
Thanks in advance...again...

That doesnt sound right. If it drives, the computer works. Something is keeping the computer from readiness. No engine light, and no readiness.
Mine did this a few weeks ago, but when I ran the readiness test on it, it was a no cat and 02 sensor not allowing it to pass.
Do you have the emission slip from before?
There should be a list that will say passed or failed beside it...

While I don't have it in hand, I had my buddy look it over, and that's all he said the form said. I don't know...
I'm looking at loopholes in the system. If I can get the car out here to cali in time to mail in the "out of area" waiver, and not pay late fees...I may have a way out... :ninja: It's due on the 27th of February...
