"At last year's Consumer Electronics Show, Warner Bros. made seismic waves by announcing that it would no longer be supporting the Toshiba-backed HD DVD high-definition digital media playback player. The move spurred a number of other studios to follow suit, signaling the end of the Microsoft-supported device and giving the format war win to Sony's Blu-ray Disc player, which comes built in with the PlayStation 3.

Robbie Bach with Bill Gates.

With this year's show in full swing, the talk has once again returned to the possibility of an Xbox 360-compatible Blu-ray player. In contrast with the "maybe, maybe not" stance the company took last year, Microsoft has come out definitely opposed to the option. In an interview with Seattle-based news site Tech Flash, Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices division, ruled out a Microsoft-supported Blu-ray player for three specific reasons.

"It's not a feature we get a ton of requests for," Bach told Tech Flash. "When you ask people the list of things they want to see us spending time creating in Xbox, Blu-ray is way, way down on the list. The second thing is, from a technical perspective, it doesn't help us in the core of what Xbox does, which is in gaming. We can't have publishers produce games on Blu-ray disc. Because then they won't play on the 28 million Xboxes we've already shipped. So it doesn't help us in the core gaming space."

Bach went on to say that the final reason is that a Blu-ray-equipped Xbox 360 SKU simply wouldn't make much economic sense. "And so the scenario is," he continued, "OK, let me get this straight: I'm going to add something to the product that's going to raise the cost, which means the price goes up, consumers aren't asking for it, and by the way, my game developers can't use it."

Bach went on to reiterate Microsoft's commitment to serving video content digitally through Xbox Live. Specifically, he called out the Xbox 360's ability to stream high-definition video through a collaboration with Netflix, a service that was introduced with the New Xbox Experience dashboard update in November."

Just FYI:

In sixteenth century England a clandestine group of cabbage worshipers inhabited London's seamier neighborhoods, practicing a variety of bizarre rituals involving cabbage—including coleslaw, sauerkraut, and the newly invented Reuben sandwich, which had been banned by the government as being subversive ever since the visiting Count Halitosis had disgraced himself by splattering corned beef on the tablecloth at a state banquet.

With informers everywhere, it became common among the cabbage cult to cut a very small hole in the doors of the places of worship, so that the high priest could peer through and verify the identity of those wishing to enter. However, electric lights being unknown, it was difficult to make out the faces of people standing outside in the dark, so another method was devised.

Followers who desired entrance to the service were to make a small mark, like a birthmark, on the left side of their nose, and then thrust their proboscis through the hole in the door. If the mark was missing, the priest would know that the nose did not belong to a true believer, and he would take a sharp paring knife and slice a long strip of skin from the nose. Understandably, the King's guardsmen came to be very wary of taking an assignment which could result in "skin off my nose", and eventually the phrase came to mean anything costly or painful. Those who had suffered the indignity of having their noses pared like an apple were, of course, subsequently easy to spot walking down the street, and peasants would tease them about the wisdom of "sticking their noses where they didn't belong".

Eventually the secret of the mark on the nose was discovered by spies who managed to infiltrate the cult, but the King, in his Divine Wisdom, refused to permit his guardsmen to stoop to such silliness, and proclaimed that any of his men wishing to keep their heads attached to their shoulders would do well to "keep their noses clean".

Found this on google.

may not be true but it makes sense either way

a developer would be a fool to not write games for microsoft for the lack of blu-ray. 78% of people dont even have a tv worth buying a blu-ray console.

you didn't catch what I meant. . I meant that Microsoft are the fools for not converting over to have access to other developers that already use the BLuRay technology. But now isn't really the time to swap over and might as well wait it out for BluRay technology prices to drop some more so it's more cost effective to both sides (Microsoft and the Developers). Oh and if Microsoft would swap over Game prices would drop due to both platforms using it.

not all games are written on blu-ray.. anyway. If ps3 wouldnt have jump the gun games would be cheaper..lol

You basically agreed to what they said. Its not the best time to convert over to blu-ray and abandoned the ones who already have a 360. and dont want to spend another 400$ on another system this early.
