I have 2 chinchillas, Piggy and Puffy. They are both female and they have to stay together. They have been our shop pets for several years now. Piggy has the cutest personality and she likes to be petted. Puffy is a little more shy. She wouldn't bite you, but she just won't let you pet her as easily. A little backwards since Piggy is a pet store pet and Puffy was hand raised by me since she was 12 weeks.

They come with a big, 3 story metal cage ($250 cage) that is meant for ferrets and all the supplies, which include:
dust bath house
dust bath
food
treats
water bottles
Timothy hay

They love to get out of the cage and run around, but they can be hard to catch to put away. If you have an extra room to let them out in, it's easier to catch them, but you don't have to let them out at all.

I am giving them away because I don't work at the shop anymore and I can't take them home (I have 2 cats). I just feel like they need a little more attention. Dan takes very good care of them and loves them, it's just a pain for him cuz he has limited time.

I suggest that you do your research on chinchillas if you have never had one. They are very easy to take care of, they just have certain things that they need (dust bath, timothy hay and aspen bedding basically) that are different from dogs and such. here is a good link:

see i recently gave my dog to my best friend simply because being in an apt he didn't have room to run.. but something this small is a bit diff...

and easier to take care of.. (don't have to worry about walking them.. or leaving them alone over night)....

Tracy

They only smell if you don't clean their cage (like any animal). Kind of like a gerbil or guinea pig....but nothing like a ferret who smells all of the time.

is anyone else in AWE considering people make coats from something so small? a XXL full length coat must be like the equivalent of a massacre.

is anyone else in AWE considering people make coats from something so small? a XXL full length coat must be like the equivalent of a massacre. It takes hundreds. It's really quite sad.

One of the species is extinct.

Fur industry

The international trade in chinchilla fur goes back to the 16th century. The fur from chinchillas is popular in the fur trade due to its extremely soft feel, because they have about 60 hairs sprouting from each hair follicle. The color is usually very even which makes it ideal for small garments or lining of large garments, though some large garments can be made entirely from the fur. The pelt of a chinchilla is relatively small, so many animals must be killed to make a single coat. This fact led to the extinction of one species, and put serious pressure on the other two. Though wild chinchillas are no longer hunted for their fur, domestic chinchillas are still bred for this use.[12]
