Nissan to run part-season in FIA GT

By Matt Beer Friday, February 27th 2009, 12:13 GMT

Nissan GTRNissan will return to top-line European sportscar racing this season with a four-round FIA GT Championship programme in partnership with Gigawave Motorsport.

Aston Martin driver Darren Turner and long-time factory Nissan racer Michael Krumm are set to drive a new Nissan GT-R as a precursor to an entry in the proposed new GT1 world championship that FIA GT boss Stephane Ratel is creating for 2010.

A Nissan statement said the purpose of the four 2009 appearances was to "check the performance of cars to be sold to racing teams competing in the
FIA-GT1 class." The Nissan will not be eligible for FIA GT points this season.

The car has been developed by Nissan's in-house motorsport company NISMO, who will run it in partnership with Gigawave. Autosport revealed last month that Krumm had already tested the car in secret in Japan.

The project is Nissan's first major worldwide sportscar programme since they fought for outright victory at Le Mans in the late 1990s.

Japan's Auto Sport magazine has procured a handful of shots and some preliminary specs on the FIA-GT1-ready Nissan GT-R, and judging by the modifications and performance stats, Nissan is planning an all-out assault on the series and a possible campaign at LeMans.

In order to get the GT-R up to snuff, NISMO has fitted the super coupe with a full body kit, GT-style wing, plexiglass windows, upgraded brakes, wheels and ducting, along with a hood reminiscent of the unit fitted on the SuperGT GT500 class GT-R. Informed speculation says that Nissan has ditched the twin-turbo'd 3.8-liter V6 in favor of a V8, possibly the 4.5-liter VK45DE used on the SuperGT racer.

The Nissan GT-R LM is rumored to be putting out 542 hp and 448 lb-ft of torque with a curb weight of 3,417 pounds and a price tag somewhere in the ballpark of 18,000,000 yen, or just under $200k US. Production is rumored to be limited to 300 units total, with 10 vehicles being built each month.

The LeMans car would only be sold to teams competing in the enduro, with a price tag of 65,000,000 yen ($720k US), 592 hp, 506 lb-ft of torque and tipping the scales at 2,976 pounds. There's still no confirmation when Nissan will begin campaigning the GT-R in a series outside of SuperGT, but don't be surprised to see an LM-spec car in at least one series in 2009.

It does look very good. Good on Nissan for not dropping motorsport in these times.

Very nice. IF this were to ever make it to ALMS, I'd love to see Corvette Racing finally getting some much needed competition in the GT1 class... but then again, isn't ALMS consolodating GT1/GT2 into one class soon?

Found some good blown up shots from testing at Fuji.

I have a STRONG feeling this car will be powered by the VK45DE V8 currently run in the GT500 GTR.

Nissan begin testing new GT car

Friday, January 9th 2009, 11:30 GMT

Nissan's return to international sportscar racing in the proposed world championship for GT1 cars in 2010 has moved a step closer after the company began testing a new GT machine in Japan.

The NISMO-built GTR test mule first ran at Fuji just before Christmas, with Nissan Super GT racer Michael Krumm at the wheel.

Nissan have acknowledged the existence of the car, but claim it is a test vehicle that will be used to evaluate the GTR's motorsport potential.

"It is a test car," NISMO's general manager of corporate planning Manaki Iwamoto told this week's Autosport magazine.

"We are not claiming there is a specific category that we are looking at, although this car has not been developed for Super GT.

"Since the launch of the GTR 18 months ago, we have been looking at opportunities to race the car."

He declined to set a timescale for a decision about Nissan's future racing plans.

"It is very difficult to answer that question in the current financial climate," said Iwamoto.

FIA GT Championship boss Stephane Ratel welcomed the emergence of the car, which he hopes will be part of the FIA GT1 world championship he plans for 2010 and beyond.

"That the car is running is a good sign," said Ratel. "They have decided to build a car and I hope others will follow."

No. Preparation for a single GT class. The GT2 Version is being built by Pratt and Miller now but they haven't shown anything yet so i think they are behind schedule. Originally it was said that the GT2 version would begin racing right after Le Mans.

Luc Alphond runs them at LeMans.

SRT and Phoenix Carsport run C6Rs in FIAGT.

After announcing its intention to run in the FIA Championship with a GT-R, Nissan has finally released a host of technical details and race-dates for its GT1-spec R35. The GT-R will make its debut at Silverstone on May 3rd and will campaign in three more races in 2009 before its all-out assault on the field in 2010.

The GT1 GT-R was testing at the Paul Ricard circuit in France earlier this week, and with the help of NISMO and Gigawave Motorsports, the racer is well on its way. As expected, Nissan has dropped the twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 in favor of a naturally aspirated VK56DE 5.6-liter V8 engine putting out 600 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. A Ricardo six-speed transmission and a 5.5-inch carbon triple plate clutch is fitted to channel power to the rear wheels. Six-piston calipers, carbon ceramic discs and 18x13-inch RAYS forged wheels are fitted at all four corners.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before the clueless fan boys make their way in here, why would Nissan want to make this into a GT1 car? Corvette is leaving to go to GT2 after Le Mans and Aston's effort ended in 2008.

Do they want to race themselves? Even the ALMS is thinking of replacing GT1 with GT3.

Why is Nissan so dumb as to keep all those cars in a warehouse? Both Toyota and Honda have museums built for their cars so Nissan should follow suit.

i would hope not. i mean everything he knows is in flowery branch and he's been with prat & miller for how long? i wouldnt think he would go, i mean yea its a decrease in horsepower and what not dropping down to gt2 but there is more competition and thats what the corvette guys have been craving you know; instead of just racing themselves.

has anyone seen the look of the new corvettes? were they at the saint pete race? i didnt get a chance to watch it.

Turner confirms Nissan race deal

By Steven English Tuesday, April 7th 2009, 13:20 GMT

Darren Turner has confirmed that he will race Nissan's GT-R in four rounds of this season's FIA GT Championship.

The Japanese manufacturer announced in February that its NISMO-developed GT1 car would be run by the Gigawave Motorsport team in four of the series races, ahead of the proposed 2010 GT1 world championship.

Turner, who is also racing one of Aston Martin's LMP1 cars in the Le Mans Series, was expected to share the Nissan with Michael Krumm and today announced his deal to race at Silverstone, Oschersleben, the Spa 24 Hours and one more event to be decided.

"I'm looking forward to helping NISMO and Gigawave develop the GT-R to make sure it is competitive in time for the new regulations in 2010," said Turner. "It's a real privilege to play a part in such an exciting programme. It's also good to be racing in the FIA GT Championship again as I have had some good results there in the past."

A Nissan statement explained that the 2009 programme has been put in place to "check the performance of cars to be sold to racing teams competing in the FIA-GT1 class," although the car will not not be eligible for points this season.

The GT-R will makes its FIA GT debut in the season opener at Silverstone on May 3.

It is powered by a 5.552 litre V8 engine developing around 600bhp. The engine type is a VK56DE which in everyday life is the muscle that shifts the Nissan Titan pickup truck.
