View Full Version : Fall Import Showdown 2005 - October 9th

paulblackgsx
09-14-2005, 09:52 AM
Import Atlanta will be here covering the Fall event and will have a booth! If you didn't come to the Spring event, you definitely missed out.

The Import Showdown is one of the southeast hottest and fastest growing drag events. Our unique style of true, heads up competitions and open runs (test and tune passes) has driven our success. No bracket racing, no racing for the closest ET. Simply put, the first one down the track wins. At the spring event more than 750 people made the trek from all over the southeast to watch 130 cars make passes. We paid out nearly $3000 dollars in cash to our 5 classes. Our event motto is simple: it's all about the racing. And it's designed for everyone to come and enjoy: competitive, sportsman, test and tune, or just watch.

The Import Showdown is not for profit and is put on by GA DSM. 95%+ of all money collected is returned to the event. Any remaining funds are returned to the sponsoring club, GA DSM. It's held twice a year at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, GA. It's relaxed, it's fun, and it's all about the racing!

Despite the name, the event is open to EVERYONE. Import, Domestic - doesn't matter. You will find nearly every make and model vehicle at our event - Hondas, Nissans, DSMs, BMWs, Ford, Chevys, Mercedes, Toyotas... you name it. We do limit competition classes based on number of cylinders, power adders, etc so be sure to check the website for competition rules. We do not limit competitions based on make/model. Test and tune is open to any vehicle (including bikes) that meet that track safety requirements.

If you are a spectator, not only is this some of the best and most competitive sportsman racing in the southeast. We also have over $2000 dollars in giveaways. Dyno tuning from Batlground, Gift Certificates from Evolution Auto Design and 3SX Performance, subscriptions and issues from Grassroots Motorsports, TShirts from Sprayglo, and more.

We're exicted about the Fall 2005 event and with the continue success of the Spring event, we're looking to BIG things in 2006! Please come out, enjoy the event, and share your suggestions. This event is for YOU, the people who run and watch!

You can find details on classes, rules, directions, hotels, availability of race gas, and more at the official site: www.importshowdown.com

Prizes: Payouts and Trophies

FWD Class

Cylinder Limit: 4 or 6 cylinder vehicles allowed

Power Adders: One power adder allowed

Prizes: Payouts and Trophies

All Motor Class

Tires: Radials (Drag Radials ok)

Cylinder Limit: 4 or 6 cylinder vehicles allowed

Power Adders: None allowed

Prizes: Payouts and Trophies

Tire rules clarifications:

Radial tires are defined by as any radial compound tire. This does not mean any DOT approved tire is allowed, it must be a radial tire. If you are unsure if your tires meets these rules, please email the event coordinators [email protected] ([email protected])

DOT Approved are defined as any tire which is DOT approved. This can be any compound, as long as they are street legal.

Rules That Apply To All Classes

Must be a street legal vehicle with recent tag

Must have front half of interior intact, including booth front seats. This includes carpeting and panels. A missing piece here or there is ok, no obvious stripping of the front half of the interior. Exception: Showdown class only requires complete dash, single seat.

Exhaust is required, no open down pipes. Pipes that exit behind the front wheels and away from the vehicle or electronic cut outs are allowed.

Fuel cells are OK if they are large enough (generally 8 gal. minimum) for street use. Fuel cells that are too small for normal driving are not allowed.

Can not be a purpose built drag car (this is generally defined as cars that have modifications that eliminate their sportsman attributes that would only benefit drag racing, such as wheelie bars, race automatic transmission swaps, etc). If you are unsure, please ask!!

Any (1) one vehicle can only enter (1) one class. You can not compete in more than one class with the same car.

Vehicles can be brought to the event on a trailer, as long as the other rules are met.

Vehicles must meet track/NHRA safety requirements

The event coordinators have the right to modify these rules at any time they feel it is necessary to ensure a fun and fair day for everyone.

Any attempt to get around these rules or gain an unfair advantage is grounds for disqualification.

Classes are based on turnout and competitiveness. Classes are not designed to keep anyone away, only to provide an entertaining and fair structure. Again, class and competition rules do not apply to the test and tune/open run portion of the event. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to talk to us!"

If you have any questions about whether your car meets the competition requirements, please email us at [email protected] ([email protected])

if the dp goes under the car is that fine? im confused because of this statement: Pipes that exit behind the front wheels and away from the vehicle or electronic cut outs are allowed.

if ecut out is allowed, couldnt we run open downpipe?

If the downpipe is long enough to pass the front wheels and is directed away from the motor horizontally we are going to allow it. What we are trying to avoid is just an open dump straight out of the manifold or turbo (depending on yoursetup).

Hope that helps clear it up. If you have an open DP and it runs away from the engine and runs horizontally you will be fine. Wastegate dumps are exempted.

Twin turbos would be counted as a single power adder. Twin charged (turbo and supercharger) would count as two.

So why is it FWD cars can use slicks, but RWD/AWD cars cannot? If this is truely about everything being fair, why not let everyone use slicks or make everyone use street tires?

So why is it FWD cars can use slicks, but RWD/AWD cars cannot? If this is truely about everything being fair, why not let everyone use slicks or make everyone use street tires?

because an AWD with drag radials on all 4 and a RWD with etstreets will 60 foot the same or better then most powerful FWD cars. Peters gold hatch on a good track goes mid 1.6 60 foots. Most AWD cars can usually do that on stock street tires with a decent amount of power. If you put a set of gforce drag radials on an AWD car you can knock down 1.5 60 foots with over 500 rwhp usually. I think that keeps everything even for the fastest cars in showdown and lets the hp do the talking on the big end.

iloveboost
10-04-2005, 08:22 PM
I understand that, Windsor. You actually proved my point. Some RWD cars don't get traction because their back tires aren't on the ground, yet FWD or AWD cars don't have that problem, yet they don't get to use wheelie bars because they're (wheelie bars) not used on the streets. Last I checked, neither were slicks.

I drive a FWD car, so I know about traction (even though I don't have any), but if this race is to be 'fair', don't restrict other vehicles to accomidate just us FWD cars.

For it to be "fair"; if a FWD can use slicks, then so can everyone else. They're basically giving FWD cars the crutch here, and that is by no means fair.

Basically, my point being, don't claim to try to make it a fair playing ground for all cars when you make rules to benefit one certain type of car, which is FWD in this instance. This is all.

RWD cars don't get traction becasue their back tires are NOT on the ground? What do you mean by that? Very very few RWD cars can pull all 4 wheels off the ground on a launch...unless you were meaning front tires NOT on the ground and hell if a car can pull the front wheels its getting traction....maybe not the most efficient way to accelerate the car but the traction is there.

iloveboost
10-04-2005, 09:21 PM
lol, whoops. I meant front tires not being on the ground.

I just think it should be equal across the board, no crutches for anyone. Period.

That, in my opinion, is a fair race.

Your car is a 12sec car on slicks. One of my customers, whose car I tuned, did pretty well today. Before today, he hadnt run better than a 14.4. Well, the slicks went on, and his times got much better throughout the day, with him eventually running a 12.8@109 in the final round of the Showdown class, and actually taking 2nd place, lol. His car was a red 2nd gen FWD Eclipse. He was making almost identical power to your car, and when I was helping Dan with your car the other night, we both were saying how deceptively fast your car really is. Not to mention, he was running with no LSD either. The track times dont do it justice at all. If you had slicks, it would be a totally different story, and would most likely be even faster than the 12.8 that my customer ran.

My fastest run of the day was just what I expected, 14.2. I never can get better than a 2.4 60' time in that car .....

Yea, I mean I can tell my car is fast and should be running way lower then what it was. Just when I finally got the hang of how to launch it my 2nd gear decides to screw up. Oh well there is always the spring.

I'd like to thank everyone who came to the event (race or watch) and those who have supported this event. It was definitely a blast. The track seemed pretty slick, both from my personal experience and from the comments made. I promise to take this an item to discuss with the track for 06.

Turnout was amazing. I think it could have been even better had the weather looked better. But not a drop of rain fell and we ran the whole day. 700 people and 150 cars made 1100! passes. This is right inline with the 750/140 we had for the Spring event.

I'm looking forward to hearing some feedback from everyone on improvements. For 06 we'll have the opportunity to shuffle some classes, look at moving to Saturdays, and a host of other improvements! This event is for all of you, everyone who comes, so feel free to make suggestions!

Congrats to all of the winners and I hope everyone had a great time! I had a little more time this time around to walk around and talk to people, and felt good about what I heard. I hope everyone had as much fun as we did.

hey halfbaked, I thought I saw you run a low 13? If not, I Dont know what the hell I was thinking.

Sorry I missed this sooner.

I'm assuming this question is directed at the Showdown class? The idea is to provide fairly similar 60 foot times. A previous poster mentioned FWD on slicks (in good conditions) can cut a 1.6 60 foot, which is what an AWD can do on drag radials, and a RWD can do on DOT approved (there are a lot of impacts to this we know, but generally speaking from results of the events we've collected, then generally average out). So the "fair" part is that you limit everyone to a tire that produces similar results. It's a different type of fair, but considering that we deal with primarily sportsman racers, we are limited in the areas we can restrict. People are not going to greatly modify their setups for our event. Nor do we expect them to.

So if your thinking fair means if we allow one group to run one thing, the others should too. Then your right, no it's not fair. But our intention wasn't to be fair that way. Our intention was to be fair but ensuring that one group wouldn't have a significant advantage over the other, which is why we choose the types of tires we did.

All of this is always open to discussion. So whether you agree with us or not, we do take note of peoples suggestions, and the results. We didn't greatly modify our classes from Spring to Fall to try to help things run smoothly. However, the classes are wiped clean for 06. We'll definitely look at all of these, the results. I just want to be sure everyone knows that we actually try to pay attention to as many comments as possible. We put this event on for everyone who comes, so your input matters. We change everything and unless we go to bracket racing, nothing will be completely fair. As you can see, there are even different ideas of what fair itself means. Hope this helps at least explain the thought process. Your comment suggestion is noted.

Nope, I should have haha but 13.9 was the best I could pull all day.

My traps were good for low 13s tho.

very well said... AWD and RWD can knock 60fts the same as FWD with slicks if not better.... i mean most of us cut 1.6 once in a while and mostly 1.7 60ft and i know that RWD and AWD can do the same also....

you should learn that before you can claim "WE HAVE THE FASTEST EVO IN GA" maybe you should beat the current fastest time... i don't think i saw anyone in 11's in the AWD class but an eclipse, which you didn't build :goodjob:

Yea, I know.

I am going to change my transmission fluid and see if that helps with my 1st to 2nd shift...

Hopefully it will. I may be at commerce before it closes for the year...if anyone knows when that is.
