Global Recession, either spend money on racing, or hoard the money so your company survives.

Sticking to CORE business (selling cars). GM Mazda Honda Toyota Ford --- they are the main companies that really uses data gained from racing and it ends up in your commuter car. (forgot Sube and Mitsu as well). A lot of others are just in it for the visibility, or the technology only makes it to their sports cars or hig(er) end cars. It's ungodly expensive and if the sales don't compute on the lot, then they have to cut costs.
Keep in mind, that in the major series' the companies (i.e Honda) often doesn't outright own the team, they sanction the team and support them w/ hardware/engineering etc. For example - if you had the coin to put a racing team together and Honda believed in you they will support you (like the Real Time Racing guys - have changed manufacturers a million times b/c Peter is proven - a manufacturer would be dumb not to support RTR if RTR wanted to fly their banner). RTR is a racing team, but not an Acura entity - even though Acura supports their racing/engine developement program. Make sense?

as far as I know, realtime has ran hondas, acuras a bmw in GT and a Nissan Spec V. what other cars were there?
and as far as f1 goes,I think Honda owned the team. they bought it from BAR several years ago. Now theymight sell to Prodrive who owned the team originally
