Ok so I am going tomorrow to look at upgrading from a EOS Reble Xti to a 50D. Any advice? Good, not good? I like the feel of the camera a lot better (I know the 50D and Xti are two totally different things), and I like the layout of everything as well.

Is there any downside to the 50D? Should I just get the 40D?

Thanks

I would get the 40d. from what i have read the 50d is actually quite a bit noisier than the 40.

newer is not always better.

where are you going tomorrow that you would slap down the cash without knowing whats up?

Sometimes it's not always about the best camera out there, but the best lens. :) For about 1k you could get a lens that makes your shots look like an upgraded camera or better!

Great deal on that 50D none the less though!

Have fun with the dust using that 28-135 lens. I have it and never use it. It has no tight sealing so it acts like a vaccume for dust when you use it and pulls it into the body.

XTi and more lens!

This is coming from someone that has 400D and 40D ;)

IQ and ISO performance are close. Edge goes to 40D. Controls and comfort the 40D slays the XTi though.

50D... meh. Too many megapixels in the sensor.

x2

Sell your old lenses on eBay or wherever you'd like and buy the new lens off of B&H. I'm sure there are exceptions, but everything I have ever bought was always cheaper to get through B&H.

I broke my XTi so I was looking at the 40D and 50D. All the reviews for the 50D were bad so I bought 2 40Ds. 1 for me and 1 for my wife.

I made the same decision. 40D over the 50D. The 50D was just not enough of an improvement to warrant the cost.

Hmm, I just went Old School and got the 5D. :p

The 5D is a pimp camera, but I would have a really really really hard time justifying the premium price for the body and the expensive-ass lenses you need for it.
enjoy, though!

why?

high iso performance is off the charts, and its FF ftw.
if you dont need it for track stuff, then get a 5d. I have a 40d, and a 1dmk3. if the 40d had high iso performance it would be an awesome camera. but it doesnt, sadly. so i rearely use it unless my other camera is dead.
50d does have the new LCD screen. so thats cool

yeah, honestly i sell them. there isnt really a difference between the 40 and the 50d i would jus tconsider maybe finding a 40d if you want to go into the d series.

unles hte 50d has higher iso. but other than that i dont think it woudl be worth the extra cash. i havent really read up on teh 50d at all, except for a few improvements that arent really picture related

This site runs down the differences between the 40D and 50D. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos50d/

Although the 50D is an upgrade, the difference in price between what you would pay for a 50D and what you would get for a used 40D is not worth the new features unless remote control, 5 more megapixel, and live view are important to you.

High ISO is overrated, just buy a better lenses

Speaking of that, anyone want to buy me a 24mm f/1.4II? :D

liveview is on the 40d as well. mine has it

as for the faster lens comment. ever try shooting gym sports? yeah not gonna happen at less than 2,000 iso unless it is SUPER well lit

high iso performance is off the charts,

Don't contradict him. He'll get all PMSy and hormonal on the thread and explain why he's right (even when he isn't).

5d only goes to 3200Please tell me when you've ever had the need to legitimately use an ISO over 1600 or 3200. Examples would be great too!

He said High ISO performance, as in IQ...he's not saying it has the highest ISO available. High ISO doesn't mean anything if it can't get a quality shot anyways.

yeah, and you can use it well up there.....
try using 2,000 iso on a 50 or 40d...oh wait. you cant. 3200 is useless on a 40d. 1600 is borderline

i have alot
Car shows where i cant use flash indoors (not many), indoor BBall games i cant flash(some refs wont let you strobe) wrestling, evening football, evening track days, indoor events. i shoot a ton of stuff for work, and i find myself using higher iso to get away from flash if its not needed.

i was just saying that it only goes to 3200. just a statement. the 5dmkII obviously goes way higher, but so does the pricetag. :(

o rly?

NO PP other than noise reduction. No Sharpening and no color correction or changes in that department.

Handheld - Granted there is some camera shake but you can see that with the current available PP software and noise reduction capabilities you can shoot high ISO

This is not even going CRAZY with the Noise Reduction...

I got your PM :)

Also when using NN plugin I just used a preset on the 'chart'. So nothing crazy and better noise reduction could have been done.
