Hey IA. I am new to the import scene and cars in general.

So my question is, What the hell are all the general terms used in the scene.

Also, where is the best place to start when trying to learn more?

What cars are you into? Just read some threads. And ask questions in here. :D lol

As far as the terms, I stay away from ricer talk...

If you want to learn, start by reading up on things using credible sources- Car mags, credible websites. Try to stay away from learning things from forums... 99% of the time people are completely wrong. If you want advice from a forum, make sure it's from a person with a good reputation and history of working on cars. There are quite a few very knowledgible people on IA, but about 10 times as many complete idiots. Just make sure the source of any info is credible. Always double check things. Then get some hands on time. I started working on cars when I was 13, on a early 70's Trans Am. I moved to imports by age 16. My first work on imports was doing some basic bolt on upgrades. These are usually pretty simple, and a good place to learn. From there I have moved up and done everything from engine work to body work at some point or another (as a hobby, never professionally). For the last year or so I haven't had much time for cars, but I'm planning on buying a project sometime in early 2009... I'll have to brush up on some things lol.

I feel ya. I don't know, All my friends have been suggesting the Honda as a good starting point.

allmotoronly
12-08-2008, 04:59 PM
honestly, the honda is a good starting point, being (mostly) easy to work on and cheap to fix up, but there are sooo many modified honda's on the road these days. I would suggest trying something different. What is your price range on a car?

Nothing2Lose
12-08-2008, 05:10 PM
At the moment, I am looking for Fast and Durable. Any car I buy, it will double as my daily. my price range is 1k to about 8k. I am not looking to be a ricer, so looks don't really matter to me, all I ask for is clean paint and no dents.

Then cough up about 30k for a Supra. Prob the toughest, quick car you can purchase.

Stick with a honda. Bunch of parts, you can learn the lingo fairly quickly. I say get a 92-95 Hatch, gut it and nice stock H22 swap for great power to weight ratio. Most go with a B16 to boost them.

I've got a friend with a 94 Supra TT 6 speed 130k miles clean title that he has up for sale. He's asking $19k. The car is clean, but he's having a hard time selling with the economy low. He was originally asking in the low to mid $20k's.

I am interested in Drag, But I wouldn't mind doing moutian or some midnight run type of shit.

I have been looking at a few Skylines for cheap. If not skylines, then I would get a the 240 or RX7.
One thing I have noticed in my few weeks of being on the map is that everyone has atleast one GSR teggy. I want to break the box, so I have been looking at a few power pages and the EVo lancer is looking pretty sweet.

That's one thing, though. I haven't picked car and I don't think I will see a few of them in action.

Nothing2Lose really has nothing to lose... Yet. ^_^

Another quick question, where can I read up and see pictures of the different engine types for the various companies like honda and nissan?

I think I'll get my hands on a DA and just swap the motor. It'll be a good story to tell my children and I will have my cheap car.

Man... I hear the K20 engine is the new good shit? But from what I've seen, B is still THE only way to go to get a solid 8sec time on the 1/4.

But I still don't understand why. Can someone give me some solid points on this subject?:???:
