View Full Version : Bad grammar/spelling/punctuation disease

Mr. Clean

Is IA an example of how hard America's education system is failing? All day I see the most ridiculous spelling issues and misuse of words such as their/they're/there, to/too, your/you're.

I know I don't always use capitalization and occasionally fuck up on a sentence or two, but there is no excuse for some of the shit that I see spilled all over peoples' posts.

So is 80% of IA that retarded or does no one really care how they portray themselves on a public board? Oh and I understand an occasional shitty post if someone was in a hurry or just really didn't care about a nonchalant post, but there's way too many times when I KNOW someone just really doesn't understand proper use of the English language.

Maybe this is all just coming from the fact that I've had to write papers for about the last 15 years and consistently do well. It may just be ingrained in me that when you type... do it right. I don't really know. This thread isn't to be a ginormous grammar nazi and make me out to be a douchebag. I just can't stand reading a bunch of posts that look like a 3rd grader wrote them.

A couple that I cannot stand:

Definitely. Please fucking spell this word right.

I gave up trying to correct people's grammer on here a long time ago. It always ends up being an arguement about how that is their "style". And on another note, I HATE when people type in all caps. It makes me want to shoot a kitten out of my potato gun.

I don’t have a problem with “leet speak” or texting abbreviations when they are called for. But I hate when people use that language when there is no need. If you are playing an online game and any time spent typing is likely to get you killed, its normal to type something like “srsly hlp me loc8 it”. But I find it annoying when someone sends an email that they had all the time in the world to type, and it reads like something they texted while weaving in and out of traffic.

Now read this: http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/03/sci_fi_channel_aims_to_shed_ge.php

The Sci-Fi channel is changing its name (effective July 7th) to “Syfy“. Why are they doing this? because it’s “actually this is how you’d text it,” … “It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise.”

Why is it cooler to name things the way 12 year old kids would text them? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard! It’s bad enough that kids these days cannot even tell time on an analog clock, but once marketing “geniuses” like these tards are done, people won’t bother to use proper english anymore.

I guess everyone else wiill follow suit now, so I might as well make some predictions on future name changes:

* Burger King -> bk “hv it ur way lol”
* McDonalds -> mcds “Im <3 it”
* WalMart -> wmrt “alwys lo $”
* Nike -> nIkE “jst doit, dnt b gay”

I won’t even go into how strange it is that the Sci-Fi channel does not want to be associated with Sci-Fi stuff…because it’s associated with “geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements”….what the hell?

Ah well, I guess I’m done ranting for now, kthnxbai

Believe it or not, bad grammar can actually be good for you. It can actually serve you better than good grammar can. I'm not saying you should ignore the rules specified in the textbook. What I'm saying is that you should know when to stick to the rules and when to break them.

It all depends on the context of your writing. You need to pay obsessive attention to spelling and grammar when you're writing academic papers, business correspondence, legal papers and other such formal documents. When you're doing any of the following things, however, you have the license to break quite a few rules:

1. Creative writing. The greatest novelists and poets of English literature routinely ignored proper punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and the other basic rules your English teachers told you to follow. Think James Joyce, Salman Rushdie, Gertrude Stein and Emily Dickinson. The fascinating things they did with English wouldn't have been possible if they stuck to the rules.

2. Blogging. Popular bloggers naturally have well-written posts. However, these posts are written in an informal style that doesn't bother with the more obscure rules. That's because blogs aim to communicate with ordinary people in the most effective way possible.

3. Speechwriting. US President-elect Barack Obama's acceptance speech is a very good example of how to break grammatical rules in order to communicate in the most effective manner possible. Take a look at this excerpt:

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

For situations not included in this list, ask yourself these two simple questions:

Who are you writing for? Is it your boss? Your friends? Your clients? Is your target audience highly educated or not? What socio-economic class do these people belong to?

What effect do you want to have on your readers? Do you want to entertain them? Inform them? Impress them? Do you want them to buy your product or service?

I think that worrying so much about peoples grammar/spelling/etc on here should be the least of your concerns. Its just the intrawebz, doesn't really affect anything. I really don't care what my posts look like as long as its done well enough someone can understand what I'm saying.

My favorite is the people who bitch when you correct them, and they're all "Sorry I didn't put all my effort into using perfect grammer (always spelled this way) and spelling!!!"

Because obviously it takes ALL SORTS OF MENTAL POWER AND EFFORT TO USE 4th GRADE SPELLING AND GRAMMAR SKILLS WHEN YOU COMMUNICATE.

It takes me so much longer to type out some mockery of these retards with "u" and "their" misused, as well as using "sale" instead of sell and vice versa, etc...than it does to just fucking type something the correct way.

Don't think any of these points relate to the kids on these forums that still live at home and will probably work at Dunkin Donuts until they're 35 or so.

There's also a big difference between people who know better, but are smart enough to use their own rules in an artistic and expressive way that can illustrate something to people, and fucking morons who just literally don't even know how to talk.

I wouldn't put anyone here on IA on the same linguistic plane as Joyce or Burroughs or Kerouac. There's a difference between brilliance and ignorance.

I'm all about Naked Lunch or On The Road. However, when I see a post on IA with no punctuation, capitalization etc, I just assume the poster belongs to the lowest common denominator of humanity and I move on to another post.:lmfao:

I have always had a problem with punctuation and spelling, even as a child. Probably because even though English has become my primary language its not my first.

heck just in the religion forum I was convinced that "conscience" wasnt even a word, up until I looked it up. I was so sure he was trying to write "conscious" that i did not even consider my ignorance.

Am I ignorant of all the propper english phonetics and grammar? Yes.

Does that make me an idiot, well I personally dont think so. Then again, who wants to consider themselves an idiot.

Jason..

I understood all of that. When you're able to read something and tell the difference in the way words are phrased, it's not hard to distinguish what's what. Just because a person doesn't add the correct punctuation, doesn't justify another person to make a thread and bitch about it. Remember, this is the internet and nothing needs to be serious. I promise it will not look good on a resume, by telling them you can type in perfect order on an online forum. Which is meant for automotive pleasure.

Like someone already mentioned, at least you make a point to relay what you're saying in a way that most people can understand...

The whole shorthand, butcher the spelling of words, add a z on the end of everything, and gross obliteration of the English language in general has gone too far...Internet or not, how you present yourself is how people judge you...and I'm sorry but I can't and will not take someone seriously when they intentionally type in a manner such as that, which is diplayed very prominently, on this forum.

I read something he other day that I found shocking. The standard used in determining our literacy rate in the United States is the 4th grade level. So 99.999% (or whatever %) of people in America can read... on a 4th grade level.

There isn't much info out there on what percentage of adults function at the level they should (at least HS level). The sad part is that at my high school I remember kids graduating who could barely read. How do you get to be a high school senior when you can't read out loud from easier books like Moby Dick or Huckleberry Finn? I could understand HS kids not being able to read from something like Joyce, but seriously... wtf.

the bottom line is that i see a lot of people on here who, i know for a fact, have no idea how to speak or type. it's just frustrating i guess. i'm certainly not trying to be a nazi about it. i just can't believe that most of these people have graduated high school, but yet still have no idea how to put a sentence together. we all make a mistake here and there. that's completely understandable. it's like someone previously said: there's a difference between casual and having no idea what you're doing at a keyboard. it's just embarassing at the lack of care that goes into communicating on here. billions and billions of your own dollars go into teaching everyone how to speak and write... why can't we just make it good practice to attempt to get some shit right here and there?
