I bought a beater1990 Toyota corolla dx with an automatic bought the car with the radiator missing an all the fluid had ran out the trans drained it and filled it back up problem is i've never worked on an automatic before an it drives like the clutch is slipping [Im not stupid i know it doesn't have a clutch] any ideas what would be causing this?

clutch plates in trans are burned out it needs to be rebuilt or go to a junk yard and by one from there which would be alot cheaper

are you sure the fluid level is correct? youve gotta check it with the car up to temp etc and make sure its within the hot marks. if the fluid is way low it will feel like a slipping clutch also.

^^ That is true, first step is to check the ATF level.

If not, just swap out the torque convertor - stop saying clutch everyone!!

Took the words right out of my mouth. I kept wondering why everyone was saying clutch when its an automatic...lol

haven`t checked it while it was running do i need to?Yes. It may be that when the engine is off, the converter drains back and fills the transmission, and it is actually low on fluid causing a slip situation. Always check it with the engine running. Let it run for a few minutes before you check it so the fluid can circulate.
