Mine is a 1987 Mitsubishi Starion ESiR. I bought it because I loved the body styling on them. Doesn't hurt that they're turbo RWD :D

Oh, it was also $1000. These cars are in my opinion the ultimate do it yourself tuner car.

1986 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R "Euro Sport Intercooled Rally"

I was looking for something fun and challenging. Something i had to work on myself. I didn't want another cookie cutter honda. buy this mod and bolt it on etc... So i talked to my buddy Justin he told me what a starion was.. i had NO damn clue. But after research and searching around SQC i realized it was the car i had to have. The racing legacy and the community make this a great car if you like to do your own R&D.

OMG, you're the guy that pissed off the Prelude driver at the BP meet. I was the kid who left early cause I though he was going to come back and do something after some other 7 owners say they saw a gun sitting in his passenger seat. I've wanted to tell you ever since, even if you don't agree with the way someone has modified their car, respect that they've done work at all, they might not agree with your methods either and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to hear someone yell "your Rx-7 looks like shit, Ihear your apex seals cracking" when you drive by. Please please PLEASE be respectful of other motorists, even if you disagree with them.

definitely not. (why are you on import atlanta?) no, the OP, I didn't recognize his car as the bumper was stock when I saw it in person, but the pic with him in it, I recognized his face then the flat back and effed up hood came into play and I just had to type that out cause it's bothered me ever since. Scenario: A bunch of 7 guys all hanging together at the P meet, and a few Hondas roll by, and the OP yelled something. The prelude came back and rolled his window down. He was like "Did you guys say something about my car?" and the OP was like "Yeah, we were talking about how slow it must be." then we heard a click and a white teggy pulled up and said "Don't do it man, they've seen our plates" and the prelude driver had a moment of self reflection before getting frustrated and throwing a gun in his passenger seat then peeling out. I didn't stick around after that to see what happened next, but I have a feeling the OP mis represented the 7 guys. I'm not trying to be an ass and call ihm out, but I just want to make sure this shit doesn't happen @ the Rx-7 meet at the V.

heres my 80s ride. 1986 Grand National (so yes it is intercooled); It has upgraded turbo, injectors, fuel pump, software, FPR, DP, CB, and much more. Its just a quick street car, and I dont care about ruining its quickness to run a 10...these cars were intended to be high spirited 0-60 cars....and they are good at it.
I have suspension and audio going in it as well as bigger wheel tire pkg....as soon as the wallet recovers.
I drove this car in 87, this exact one, and told the owner when it was for sale, I wanted it. It only took one drive to know it would be mine, and it took a long time to get to that day (20 years).

I got an 86 celica supra that I'm daily driving at the moment (nothing but gutted interior and intake)

Then I got an 89 supra Turbo that I'm rebuilding at the moment (was running great for 4 out of the 5 years i've had it).

Will post some pics eventually.

how in the world does ur car weigh 2537lbs and mine weighs 32xxlbs?? wat do i have to take out.. i have manual everything..

what the hell? Are you sure? it's more like how in the hell does your car weigh 32xx pounds? My stock TII weighed in an 3005 pounds with half a tank of gas(the emissions people weighed, I don't know why). The 87 TIIs were the heaviest with the larger breaks, beefier gearbox, turbocharger/intercooler, larger diameter exhaust piping, power windows and mirrors, 16X6 inch wheels, LSD, and plush carpeting. The only things lighter on the TII were the seats and on 87.5 models and later, the aluminum hood(which mine didn't have, it had the clunky 51 lb steel TII hood). Yours is a base with the phone dial wheels and manual everything. Hell even your carpet is thinner. You should be near 2700 to 2800 pounds in stock configuration.

The FB however is roughly 2200 pounds:)

lol that's gross weight. A full tank of gas, 2 occupants, and some cargo. Basically the top rating Mazda gives for operating the vehicle safely without abnormal part wear. In essence, the weight of the car when maxed out. Yeah, you're closer to 2700-2800 NOT 3200. The 2nd gens are heavy, but not THAT heavy.

Stock, the heaviest RX7 was the 91 verts at 3140. Your car should not be even close to that. About 2700 for the base.

Just ordered 2 more front shocks, idler arm, plugs and wires (NGK). Hopefully I can get it all installed next week sometime and get it re-aligned. This car is super fun to drive, but I'm thinking of building a 2nd engine for it. More of a bastard mix b/w 12a and 13b parts and a nice carb setup. It would be ported of course. ;) I'll keep you guys updated if end up starting an engine build. The car should be in paint by the end of January, so new pics will come w/in a few weeks!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c186/StraytSix/944/DSCN1386-1.jpg

I've owned this the longest and driven it the least. Of the 7 years or so that I've had it it's only really run for about as many months. I bought the car to replace a totaled 1982 BMW 320is. After DDing the 944 for 6 months or so the head gasket blew. Then she sat. I went back and forth about rebuilding the engine, just replacing the head gasket or doing a performance rebuild. I finally decided to get her running again and did the head gasket job. From sitting the seals were in pretty rough shape, so enter another '84 parts car. Swapped engines, and the parts car engine was strong.

Took the car to Roebling Road for a NASA-SE track weekend and spun a rod bearing. Currently, the car has the original engine back in it, but there's something not quite right about it again, it burns oil and sounds like it has a rod knock. She needs another engine, and will get one eventually or a rebuild.

Merkurs kick ass. I'd love to score one sometime if I ran across one for the low.

As an update to the RX7. I started smelling fuel inside the car and under the hood and after some research realized that my fuel system dampener is fucked up and leaking gasoline onto my engine and hot exhaust. Nice eh? So instead of paying 140$ for a new one, I ordered a banjo bolt from Earl's for like 18$ shipped. So my RX7 is gonna be parked until that thing comes in. Boo. At least the car didn't go up in flames on me. Lawlz @ crappy Mazda parts.

I dunno man. I love the FB for its styling 1st. The performance and efficiency/reliability is questionable.

I have a question though for anyone who automatically shuns the 302 or any V8 swap in an RX7. Why? Just because its a Ford engine in an import? I just don't see why its such a big deal to so many people. I won't even THINK of posting this kind of stuff on RX7club, I'd get banned, rofl.

Because true classic import enthusiasts don't go against the grain like that. I've NEVER been a fan of brand-swapping. People putting Chevy engines in Porsches and shit like that? Hardcore classic Japanese car fans have no room for that. You have a Mazda so it should be a Mazda engine under the hood. It just takes away from the nostalgia of the car. You want a Chevy engine, buy a Chevy. That's the way it is viewed. Later, QD.

Ok. Well first off. You will need to figure out your ignition. The problem with putting an old 302 or any with a distributor is that Fords are in the front of the motor...therefore you will have a nice fat boy distributor poking from your hood.

I had an FB with a 400 Small Block in it. WORST driving car I ever set foot in. The hood latch had to be cut out for the Chevy dist which is in the back of the motor. The carb with breather on it, even with a low rise intake was JUST flush with the hood. Meaning, there was still a hole in the hood but the only thing you realy saw sticking up over the sail line was the bolt and wingnut of the carb. Had a Checellve rear end under it, cut down and a turbo 350 trans.
Also had cinder blocks wired into the rear end to make it get traction. Drove like 4 fat bitches in a Hyundai. If you were going in a straight line, it was the Batmobile....soon as you hit your first turn, either you were under 30 mph or you were in the trees.

Unless you got a good bit of money to throw at it to do it right. Don't bother wasting your time.

Calm down dude, no need to insult me because I want a V8 in my Mazda. Whats that all about anyway? If you really think I'm that cocky and that big of a moron, why don't you have a gander in the mirror. ;)

As far as the swap itself, I've driven ONE FC with a 302 and it was actually a pretty tame car. Extremely quick when you wanted it to be, but no worse driving than my FB is now for DD. I also will not need to cut up anything to get the motor into my car. There are many people running the Grannys mount kit and the engine fits perfectly with all stock sheet metal. The stock GSL-SE rear end can hold the power of a lightly modded 5.0 so I don't see the need in upgrading that aspect.

Anyone else have an opinion that can be reasonable and level-headed? I really am open to hear it unless you are just going to be silly like QD.

Its kinda hard to be a "brand Nazi" now a days because most car companies blend chassis' and motors all the time. (honda 3.2 in the saturn vue, ford and mazda are joined at the hip also.) I'd compare most of us to the guys who used to build hot rods back in the 40's 50's on down. the routinely put whatever motors and parts in their rides to get the job done (chevy v8 in a 32 ford, caddie big block in a drag setup etc.etc.etc) and if it looked good to them. they swapped different bumpers, tail lights and fenders to achieve the ideal look. My personal opinion is this "scene" is always supposed to be about individual expression with a shared love of cars as a whole.

You're absolutely right. For the cars of today. But for the early (60s, 70s and early 80s) years, it wasn't about brand swapping. It was taking what you had and building it to the fullest. But the majority of the enthusiasts are purists when it comes to these cars. They want a Honda to be a Honda; not a Ford swapped Honda or a Chevy swapped Toyota. People putting B or D series engines into the 1st gen Civics like mine. There's a guy putting an S2K engine in a '67 S800. Putting a new Honda engine in an old Honda is a little different. Me, I'm a true purist. I kept everything straight old school. I have an Accord engine in my Civic, but it is from an Accord of the same year.

My personal opinion is this "scene" is always supposed to be about individual expression with a shared love of cars as a whole.

I'm not downing anyone who does whatever just because I don't like it. It's not my thing and props to whomever does it. Like SKarpenz said, he'd be beheaded if he posted his idea on another forum. I agree with them, but it's his car. And it's not up to me to bash his ideas. I just let him know how I feel. As he asked. Later, QD.

The car was a 1984 or '85 FB with a Ford 302, Miata IRS, Megasquirt, and all the safety equipment necessary for a racecar. He raced it in NASA's ST2 class. The car was totalled at Rockingham, the road course not the drag strip, a couple of years ago when the backend came around and the car hit the outside wall in NASCAR turn 2.

I think Rob posted on RX7Club about the build and was nearly crucified.

I found a link to Rob's cardomain (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/714289) page with better pics of some of the mods. The final engine in the car was a stock fuel injected 5.0 engine from a '93 Mustang, iirc.

The stock GSL-SE rear end can hold the power of a lightly modded 5.0 so I don't see the need in upgrading that aspect.

Anyone else have an opinion that can be reasonable and level-headed? I really am open to hear it unless you are just going to be silly like QD.

Hmm. Mine was done in like 87 so hell if I know on mount kits these days.

Sounds to me though like your minds made up. What you asking us for? You ask a question and then whenever anyone answers it with their opinion, you give out a rebuttal to it. If your mind is so made up, why you asking us? Sounds like you wanted a fight.

Shrugs. I say go for it. Do what you want man. Don't let any of us more or less make your mind up for you.

How much would you guys hate me if I swapped a 302 into my FB? Don't reply to this post unless you have considered all bonuses of a 302 swap (gas mileage, power, reliability, maintenance). ;)

ummm bro i wouldnt hate u at all, but i will consider the fact that u will be destroying a car by putting in a 302.. the car's power to weight ratio will change and thats what RX7s are best known for, other than the rotary engine its powered by..

Seriously you should build yourself a 13T (turbo II) motor and swap that in, it'll be more fun and of course it'll be all Mazda.. just how Jay Leno swapped a bridge-ported 12A motor and tranny into his R-100.. please to keep it true, from heart and soul.

Then again i cant argue with your decision to swap in a 302 motor.. it is your car and your money, so do what u want. I will respect your you either way but not your car, even though i would love to see it lol!!

SKarpenz i will say this though.. if you swap it... swap it right.. dont just throw shit together and make it look like shit because RX7's are not shit.. :goodjob: on your project and go ahed with your future project

Alright guys, I decided to keep the rotary. I guess I thought about it and I realized that it really would be a waste to put a V8 in such a nice car as this GSL-SE. If I want to do a V8 swap I need to get a shitty old FC.

On another positive note, I picked up some REALLY nice old school Enkei wheels. They are 14x6 and a lower offset it seems. 2 piece riveted wheels, no curb rash whatsoever and they even have the original center caps. I threw a spare pair of tires on 2 of the wheels and put them on the front. I think its going to look pretty good with all 4 wheels. Now I have two sets of pretty nice wheels for the 7. Let me know what you think. BTW, I picked all four wheels up for $50.

Anyone know what model wheels these are and when they were produced?

So far: New 4 piston calipers, rotors, pads, brake lines, new ceramic long tube headers, MSD ignition, wires, plugs, fluids, and finally upgraded the old school 2 knob push button stereo/cb with a cool retro looking Kenwood HU, Alpine amp, Eclipse 6x9 and 4x6's, and finally small Rockford sub.....;) REAL old school hodgepodge every brand stereo equipment stuff......like we did back in HS! I actually agree with you. The original owner changed it from the pop-up type to the flush type. They have a Lexan smoked lens that makes it flush, but I don't feel like putting it on and off all the time. Although, the pop-up kind were notorious for having problems with the wimpy vaccum actuator thing....I think I like the flush look better.

Absolutely NOT a cross fire injection. Those started in 81 or 82 I think. This one has an L82 in it with an aluminum Edelbrock intake. Internally it's all stock, although I'd love to put a little more aggressive cam and diff carb (it has a Quadrajet in it now which is "OK", but there are far better options). The Turbo 350 tranny is cool and all, but since it's only a 3 spd....it tachs kinda higher than I'd like at highway speeds. I'm going to talk to a guy that is a master GM tranny rebuilder and see if there is anything he can do to give it some kind of OD. There are swaps that can be done for that, but I don't want to go that route. It's not really all that serious, just that it'd be nice to tach less than 3k-3.5k at 65-70....;)

Ahhh, now, come on.....you still my boy blue!!!! :D

I really didn't have any intentions on fixing this one up and driving it, but since my car was down I figured "what the hell", right?

With the new stereo stuff, it really is much nicer to drive. I hated having to drive down the road listening to my Ipod...:lmfao: It's a work in progress. It has a ton more that could be done to bring it up to 100% of my liking, but for now it gets the job done. I'm mostly going to drive it around to give my car a rest every now and again. The Lex has almost 160k, so it's time to let her rest every once in a while. Although the Lex is by far faster than this....and I miss her bad....;) I'm at the shop right now and Sam should be putting the finishing touches so I can have her back very soon.

This is for SKarpens.

Not my car, but it was an old roommate's racecar. This is the third and final incarnation of Rob's "madness".

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c186/StraytSix/DSCN1181.jpg

That's so hot

We totally dissassembled the body and the interior in order to do a quality color change. The car used to be red. We took the car to the Motorsports Nationals (Used to be NOPI) last Fall and won first place with the car in the Toyota, Lexus, Scion category. Got a pic of the FB since I lowered the rear yesterday. Its subtle, but really looks much better.

Whoa. I had no idea. We have them every other month around the Atlanta area. Only 1985 and older Japanese cars. Too bad as we don't have anyone around here with a 200sx. Later, QD.

87 Turbo II

How powerful is your carb'd 6-port? I've been thinking of switching to a carb setup but I'm afraid I'll lose a lot of driveability or maybe even some power, haha.

Woah sorry I missed this post. The dellorto carb is one of the best carbs for these motors when jetted right. And it's got an enriching choke, which means it starts in ALL weather. As for power, it's guesstimated at around 160-170 to the flywheel. It's much quicker than a stock SE and it's faster than my old stock turbocharged second gen was. A lot of this is from the Racing beat header and straight pipe into the RB muffler too. The straight pipe was drilled and tapped to run a compression fitting mated to a copper tube that provides back pressure to open the 5th and 6th ports.

Im liking the wheels. :)

Thanks man, they were a steal at $40 and in this rare-as-fuck 4 X 110 bolt pattern Mazda used for about 8 years on only 4 different cars..................

I decided it was pointless to build my '84 BMW as planned, lol! For the price of all the body parts I can buy a complete e30 M3 shell.

Still putting the '96 engine in the '84 though but rocking it semi-stock looking until I locate a M3 chassis. Seen two the past week for under $1,500 with clean titles!
