Florida opens up favored by 5.5 in the books as the visiting team this year in Jacksonville.
Rather simple, Florida is looking to get revenge on UGA from not only the most embarrassing lose for Florida last year, but the rushed field UGA pulled out against Florida after Knowshon Morenos first scoring drive for UGA of the day.

Georgia fans look at it as excuses when Florida fans talk about Tim Tebows injury or the fact that Florida had 5 defensive tackles injured for that game. This year the script is flipped in two areas, Georgia ranks 119th in the country in penalties per game, that’s horrendous and a spot that Florida nearly took up last year. Despite not seeing many flags this year if you’re a Florida fan, the Gators rank 112th in the country, so this game promises to be sloppy on both sides of the field with flags all over the place.

Now I’m going to go ahead and break it down as objectively possible as a Georgia fan can.

Florida has to run the ball successfully, they must protect Tim Tebow. This can be the opening statement in every breakdown for every football game being played throughout a season. Last year UGA loaded up the box and constantly blitzed 6 and got to Tebow in a hurry and harassed him with ease. One of the issues helping this is Florida had no rushing game for Georgia to respect. This year the tide seems to be turned, UGA comes in riding two back to back Heisman like performances from Moreno, but still rank 39th in the country in rushing offense, while Florida ranks 22nd.

Georgia ranks 6th in the country against the rush and this looks to be the most talented group of linebackers that Demps, Rainey, and Moody (who will play in this game) have gone up against this year (until Florida State.) On the flip side, it’s easy to say that this is the most impressive offensive line that Georgias defensive line has gone up against all season. LSU may have the NFL talent, they haven’t played like it.
Florida is probably going to go back to the same line splits up front as they did against LSU in order to use Demps, Rainey, and Harvins speed on the edge better than they did against UGA last year (despite Harvin averaging close to 10 yards a carry against the Dawgs last year.)

In the passing game, it will be Aaron Hernandez and his blocking ability that allow Floridas offense to click in this game. UGA is going to blitz and blitz heavy until Florida can prove they can block their front 7, something they couldn’t do last year. Dan Mullens ultimate goof last year outside of the Auburn game, was his lack of extra blockers used against a blitz happy Georgia team, this year, I look for that to change.

As talented as Georgias defensive backs are, this is the most talented and quick group that they are going to see all season. Who does UGA put on Percy? Louis Murphy will out match any DB UGA throws at him, Riley Cooper has the speed to hurt you deep from the slot and Aaron Hernandez, when not used as a blocker, is too big and quick for UGAs undersized linebackers to shut down completely. The big thing I look for Florida to do more this year that they did not do last year due to Tim Tebows health, is use more reverses and utilize more WR and RB screens to force UGA to play more zone than they want to play, which works in Floridas favor because this is when Jeff Demps hurts you.

For Georgia, their offense revolved around Knowshon Moreno, not Matt Stafford. Looking back at last years numbers, UGAs offense was embarrassingly bad for a team that talented until Moreno stepped in as the starter. UGA will generally run to the left, that is the strength of their beat up and injury riddled offensive line. Georgias bread and butter play within an opposing defenses red zone, particularly within the 10 yard line, is the play action to Sutherland or Chappas that Florida is going to have to pay attention to closely. Georgia may also run more running back and full back screens than any team in the SEC by a long shot.

Last year Floridas greatest weakness was their secondary with Joe Haden, Major Wright, and Piere-Lewis as new starters, and Georgia took advantage of that. This year, I look to Florida as having the upper advantage over Georgia in the WR vs. secondary category. Joe Haden is playing at an All-SEC 1st team rate and true freshman Janoris Jenkins looks to body up with true freshman AJ Green. In high school, AJ Greens greatest weakness was going against a physical corner who could not only push him around, but make up for it with his speed. Jenkins loves playing bump and run defense and this will be THE match up to watch in the secondary on Saturday, if Green gets rattled as he did in High School All-American games, than UGA is a one WR show with Massaqoi going against Joe Haden.

Matt Stafford has the talent and arm strength to make any throw, as stated above, the big question, is forcing Stafford into looking for just one of his deep threats. Urban Meyer has already stated that Florida will utilize the same scheme defensively they used against LSU, everyone take a specified gap and pull a safety closer to the line of scrimmage. This also tells me that neither Charlie Strong or Urban Meyer feel a threat from UGA in the passing game and feel confident in Haden and Jenkings ability to stay with UGAs receivers on an island.

Knowshown Moreno is by far the best RB that Florida has faced since last years football game. Brandon Spikes is the best linebacker in the country and the Florida defense will rally behind him in this game, it will be up to Spikes to play the game of his life in keeping Moreno in check. I look for UGA to utilize King and Moreno in this game the same way they will split playing time with Sutherland and Chappas.
Special teams is in Floridas favor and there really isn’t much of an argument here. Sporting a top 5 punt and kick return man in Brandon James and utilizing Chris Rainey, Joe Haden, and Jeff Demps on punt coverage team, it is going to be very important for UGA to pick up all their assignments when it comes time to punt or Florida may be tacking onto their punt block numbers on the year. If they get the punt off, UGA does have the talent and athleticism to keep Brandon James in check though. For once, Urban Meyer has a realiable field goal kicker, something he has not had since he has been coach at the University of Florida.

UGA doesn’t have a horrible special teams by a long shot, they rank 3rd to Floridas 4th as a team in punt returns on the year. The difference is Florida is averaging nearly 5 yards more on their kickoff returns with Brandon James and that could be a big difference in a game that should be decided by less than a touchdown.

As far as my talent breakdown:

QB: Georgia (though not by much)
RB/FB: Georgia
WR/TE: Florida
OL: Florida

DE: Florida (Dunlap and Cunningham, 7 sacks between the 2)
DT: Toss Up (Florida has a deeper rotation, Georgia's look to be more active in pass rushing. Difficult to choose)
OLB: Toss Up (This depends on if Ellerbe plays. Also difficult to choose as if Dustin Doe is healthy for Florida, he and Ryan Stamper are just as athletic as Ellerbe and Curran at their OLB positions. No one TRULY sticks out here.
MLB: Florida
CB: Georgia
S: Georgia

K: Florida

P: Florida (In 32 punts, UGA as a team is averaging 43 net punting yards given up and allowed 12 returns. Florida has punted 10 less overall and also averages 43 yards and has allowed 8 returns while dropping teams into the end zone [touchback] 6 times to UGAs 3 touchbacks on the year.)

Florida wins if:
-Offensive line blocks for Tim Tebow
-Rushing game totals at least 150 yards
-Defense keeps Moreno under 100 yards

Georgia wins if:
-Moreno runs for 150 yards again
-AJ Green plays the most physical game of his career
-Special Teams plays a completely flawless game
