What would be the best bang for buck? How much of a difference can 200cc make anyways? Also, whats the usual price difference between these two because right now i have the ole d15b7 and it sucks! Also, its got 270,000 miles on it so i kinda need to get a swap ASAP cuz it sounds like i have a rod knocking. Advice would be greatly appreciated

b16 or b18c. higher rev and vtec than the b18b. b18 has more torque than the b16 though. i personally prefer the b16 just bc its kinda likek the lil engine that could.

b16 engine that did Lol.
personally i would go with the gsr motor( b18 something)
b16 is alot better when it comes to higher revs etc...but all motor...defuintlly say the gsr b18

personally, i would want the b18c1 over the b16 mainly just being it has some extra torque. A b16 has hardly any more torque than my little d16 does.
Altho, it does cost more for the swap. I think it depends what you are wanting to do w/ this, just swap it and be done w/ it or boost it later or what? If you are planning on boosting, i think i would just get the b16 cuz its cheaper and will still be extremely fun. If your wanting to just swap it in and be done or build it up for all motor, id say go w/ the b18c1

true, the GSR is the mofo. but id take the b16 just bc everybody else would say GSR. besides, im a driver and i can beat the GSR car with my b16. HAHAAAA

yea all im wanting to do is just drop it in slap an intake and exhaust, ya know the usual stuff then maybe later on fix it up some more. Right now i just need a motor or im gonna be walking pretty soon.

If I was starting my build with a motor swap it would be with a GSR or ITR engine. I love my b16, but I wouldn't have built it if it wasn't already in my car stock. The B16 is a very fun engine especially when you turn it to 9500-10000 RPM's!

Also, whatever you get, B16 or B18C, get a good header for your first mod. Don't fool around buying a cheaper header because you will find its limits quickly when you start adding cams and other things. Get an RMF or ANR something like that, spend the extra money on a top notch header then get a custom exhaust built at Mainstream and you'll be good to go until you save up for the cams and other add ons. My numbers in my sig on my b16 are on a fairly modest build. I've still got the stock throttle body, no headwork as far as Port and polish or valve job, stock rods, stock pistons only slightly larger bore, and stock crank.

^^yep
if your kinda on a tight budget tho, ill tell ya that you will probably be happy w/ either one, especially compared to what you got. B16s in the older hatch's like yours are pretty darn quick. The b18c is just a little quicker. Both will be fun to drive.

man dont listen to these people telling you to get a b16....WASTE!!

if you're gonna spend the money for a b16, you might as well go LS/VTEC and if not go wit my boi(B18c1) its a MAN! trust me mine scoots, even in my heavy sol....and a LS w/ a b16 tranny would haul ass as well.....how much money u got to spend?

if you have a choice get the b18c1-gsr-...b16 are very weak becouse of the rod stroke,if youv'e seen the lil b16 rod you would laff, the l/s rod is thicker and has a longer stroke, thats why ls/vtec makes so much power.

what you said makes no sense. Can you tell me what a good rod stroke ratio is then please?
B16 rods are stronger that LS. how many stock LS motors do you know that rev to 8500-9000RPMS and actually last? duh, ill answer that for you, NONE.
Vtec Rods use a Better Rod Bearing that wont deteriate or flake at high rpms like LS rod bearings will, LS rods are thinner than VTEC rods and use a smaller Rod Bolt.

b16 are cheaper by about a grand but you'll be happier if you go ahead and spend the extra dough
LS Swaps are MUCH cheaper than a B16. B16 comes with MORE horspower, VTEC, closer geared transmission. full swaps still run $2000-2500. LS swaps are a dime a dozen , they run $700-1800 depending on year an mileage. GSRs are much more expensive now adays, as high as $3700 still.

i personally have had a ls/vtec in a ef hatch,a gsr in a ek hatch and am installing a b18c1 currently in my eg coupe,a lot of my friends have had the lil b16 and thay are a lot slower, hondas are known for high rpm's and no torque.do yourself a favor and start off with as much as you can. TRUST YO MAC DADDY

How much more TQ does an LS really have over a B16? 7-10 Ft/LBs AT THE MOST.

well you said it yourself, hondas are known for high redlines and no TQ, so why not go with the B16 that has a HIGHER redline and MORE power than a B18A/B? you know how hard it is to make a LS make 170whp? like $5000.you know how easy is to make a B16 or GSR make 170whp, BOLT ons. less than $1500.

I personally would rather spend the money on neither and go for a GSR, but if you dont have the money, I would go with a B16 over an LS any day. Vtec always makes more power than Non Vtec, and closer geared trannys always are better than longer unless your a EXTREMELY highly boosted car.

So once again i stand behind
B18C1>b16>B18a/b

someone please argue with me with something more than "my boi had a Fast LS y0 It WuZ MaD JDm 3rd Gare VtECAKCKCKCKCKkk"

lol, my sig speaks for itself. And if anyone thinks that B16's are slow or can't make any midrange power I'm always down for giving a ride. Now, if you want to spend $10k plus on a balls out 2.0 LS/Vtec then sure you're going to make a ton of power.(see vteckidd's sig) but if not stay with GSR or B16A2.

What's funny is that most engine builders consider the Rod ratio for a B16 to be a perfect rod ratio.

Thnx for the input guys. Im gonna go with the b18 setup. Ls/vtec all the way son. See ya'll :iaowns:

the b16 is a good rod ratio, yes.but the ls is a longer stroke and makes more power, thats y ls/vtec works so well.i agree thay don't last as long at 8000 rpm's,thay were not ment to.the question was should he buy a b16 r b18c1,not ls r b16.your confussing the issue here.b16 r made to rev higher than l/s for sure, but thay don't make enough torque for shit.thats just the facts.when you slap a vtec head on a l/s you get the torgue of the l/s witch is more than the b16,and you get the high rpm power of the vtec.NO thay do not last very long at high rpm's unless you build it too.i.e. rods/pistons ect.bottom line this guy wants to know witch motor to buy and the b18c1 is a lot better than the b16- i know all you guys with b16's r gonna b pissed but its just facts.don't get me wrong you can make anything fast with enough dough,y not start off with as much as possible and do the c1 r c5

i agree

i said B18C1>b16>LS

however, you said LSvtec make way more power, the truth is, if you want a motor you can beat on and drive hard everyday an enjoy, B16 is better than a LS/VTEC anyday.

punkr6
09-13-2005, 03:06 PM
sure you can beat on a b16 all day,i beat my daily driver sohc civic to death and she still runs strong.thats another story though.i personally build my motors for power not going around beating on them and getting tickets all day do u?lets focus on the issue here,if you can afford a gsr BUY IT you'll love it

09-13-2005, 05:56 PM
man dont build a ls/vtec......if you couldnt decide which motor to get i dont recommend building one......damn sure dont get a b16 though, i blow out 1999-2000 si's ALL DAY, so save yourself the frustration and get a gsr

i have been to both. the HP difference isnt so much as the torque. mid range power is nasty on the 1.8L motor. def dont go b16.

ls vtec makes alot of power. mine is making over 400whp. a good friend w/ the sc61 is making 505 whp at 21 psi. not saying b16s wont make power ... rlz has a b16 w/ a t4 60-1 makng over 500whp and ran 10.2 @ 142. when you overlay the dyno graphs, you'll see the point. spool, torque curves ... the ls makes 100 hp more, 1000 rpms sooner than a b 16.
i will say that for all motor, this may not apply. so forgive me if i am wrong, i live in the turbo world but love to see a fast all motor car

and about rod strength, vteckidd said it right

or do what i did ... find some idiot who doesnt know jack about motors and buy his entire LS motor (pistons, rods, CRANK) for 150 bucks. throw the pistons and rods in the garbage, sleeve the block, bore it to the new pistons, use that crank which is worth 300 anyhow, and make some power!!!!

everyone has valid points. b16 ~ fun. b20 ~ weak sauce! sleeves no good from what ive seen. b18 ~ torque monster
