I just bought a HPI Firestorm. Anyone else into R/C's? I know Nismo is, hopefully he can help out with track locations. I really want to play on a dirt track and BMW track. Looks like so much fun.

It's a cycle for me. I Sold my Yokomo GT-4 a few years back and never really had the passion to get back in.
I've been thinking of off road, like a T-Maxx or something if I ever got back in.
I've had nothing but 1/10 scale on road cars throughout the hobby, with the exception of a Barefoot Monster truck when i was like 6 (My brother assembled it)
we'll see.
Hope you have fun with yours man!

KevyKev-I love on-road but it gets boring...You can only stay on-road. But damn, the on-road vehicles look so damn sexy. lolol
I just broke the front suspension arms on mine this morning. hahahaha

I was a couple years ago. Had a stadium truck "setup" for the road, a T-Maxx, and a micro RS4. All were modded a little here and there. Very fun, but I had to start concentrating on getting a real car to drive.
I'm in a machine shop class now, seeing that I will be able to make parts when they break, I've been thinking about getting back in...

^awesome. Yeah, i got out of this and paintball b/c cars are more important. lol
-Ant.
I've had my 3.5 Revo and Associated RS4 for a couple years now. I love the "drop and go" capacity that my RS4 has (brushless motor setup), but it cannot compare to how much fun i have with the Revo. There is an offroad track not too far from here called The Onion Patch; it's where i usually went for tournaments. Nowadays i find myself cranking it up every once in a great while to play with it by the lake for a little bit when i have time.

lol, don't waste your money on a T-Maxx bro. Not unless it has a big bore engine upgrade, they're painfully underpowered. The suspension on those trucks leave a lot to be desired as well.

I had a T-maxx a few years ago and it was fun but it cost way too much to drive. Jumping it and driving it off road killed the tranny. A buddy and I were jumping ours and even idling through the air it would break the pin in the tranny upon landing. The pin held the gears together or something and it was a huge pain to replace. Having to tune the engine all the time sucked as well. I had a stadium truck and driving it around was cool minus the pull start and no reverse. I also killed the clutch in it in a couple of days driving too.

I was into On and Offroad racing for about 5 years when i was a teenager and my mom supported my habit. Now that I'm an adult and my likes have changed I build my own crawlers. They are Geared WAY DOWN and all have 2 speed trannies. They are a lot of fun and will climb pretty much anything. And they hardly ever break and hardly ever need extra parts like my old dirt track cars and on road cars ALWAYS did. And the more rough they look, the cooler they are. :D :goodjob: They all still need more detailing to be more scale though.:goodjob:

Well, I would have to think about it, i would have to add it up
$$80 TLT kit
$60- wheels and tires,
Body is about $80 on Ebay (Toy Jeep)
2 speed Emaxx or similar transmission is usually at least $50
All the suspension links are about $40
The Rooster ESC is around $80 used
The 3-4 channel radio is usually $150
55t Integy Lathe Motor $20
$20 for Emaxx, Tmaxx drive shafts
Misc. fabrication parts and materials $80
I guess roughly $700.
I remember when i built this one for a friend it was roughly $800
This was just before the tires go delievered

I used to race at the Sugar bowl. Funny I raced behind the QT at Hwy 20 and 316 back when there was a track there where the Police training thing is now. They tore that down and I had to go all the way to Sugarbowl to run against anyone. That is one of the reasons I stopped racing offroad buggies because it was such a long way from Dacula and I couldn't drive(12-15) and Crawlers you can run anywhere.

I'm sure some restraunt with a decent sized parking lot would let you set something up on one of their non busy nights as long as we eat/drink. Setting up the track would be a PITA though.

I had a Traxxas Rustler last year that I had a good bit of money into. FLM front and rear lower arms and strut towers, Integy (junk) front and rear upper camber arms, Traxxas aluminum front and rear hub carriers, Traxxas caster blocks, Traxxas XXL shocks, VXL tranny, and RPM bumper. All powered by the Castle Creations Sidewinder brushless setup. Fuckin loved that car. Rolling wheelies onto the roof and would climb a dirt hill with ease. Then someone stole it out of my truck...
Funny thing is I just bought almost everything RPM makes for the Rustler the other night so I can start on another truck. Havent decided if Im going for speed or bashing. Bashing is sooo much fun, lol. I still had extra frames and shit from the old one so I should have a decent roller here soon. Planning on going with the stock VXL brushless engine with a Mamba Max ESC.

They moved the one here around 100 times before closing it. I wish there was more of an r/c scene around here so i could write them a convincing email getting them to bring one back. The problem with the one here in the end was that the only knowledgable person working there was the manager, the rest of the employees were retarded kids working after school.

They only carry electric Traxxas. T-maxx's and Revo's are hit and miss. It's about a 50/50 chance of getting a good one. My co-worker has a T-maxx and it's shit. We've put 2 engines in it and still runs terrible. I told him to step up to a OFNA or PICCO big block engine that houses the Traxxas starter.

Honestly man, ive done atleast a dozen HG jobs on those things, and its always brought on by poor maintenance. People neglecting to change the water pump, fans not working, not enough coolant in the system, etc. The problem with HGs in those cars is that it only takes one time of running it hot to kill em.

geez you went crazy without and research mang.... balancer balances all the cells in the battery pack. helps it last longer. and help prevents....."issues"
but you really need a speed control that has voltage cut off for lipos. also you dont really need to call HPI. just look up the speed controler you have. usually they have all the specs on what it is and what it can do. but if you want a cheap brushless system. try and find a vxl for sale. they go for less than 100 now for motor and speed controler. and are still very powerful for a brushless. much more than any brushed motor. its like a 12t outlaw motor.
MidLifeCrisis
12-31-2009, 03:17 PM
haha, i understand that it balances the cells because of the way theyre wired in the pack, but my point was i dont understand why lithium polymer batteries arent wired in a series in the pack. All the crap i read on the net didnt mention the dangers behind them, so i scooped some battery bags too to make sure everythigns good. I emailed HPI yesterday about a brushless system and lipo batteries and they recommended LiPos before the brushless as they claim the 15t is an excellent motor and that my current battery is not even tapping into the motors full potential. hmm... electric is all i have to say. i wont be buying a nitro truck or car anymore. electric all the way. brushless with lipo is the only way to go now. for the massive amounts of power and run time from a battery its beyond worth it to me. even at 500 i still wound have to say e-maxx... and if your just getting started and dont know anything or much about it. i would by new so you get a fresh start. so once you start to break things and things wear out. you know you did it and how long the parts will last and fatigue time. and not a used truck with wtf why did that break i just got it. kinda like a real car. lol
argh but for 500... hmm.... 4wd definitely for pure off-road. ive seen to many people cry about not havin 4wd and ground clearance.... yeah... e-maxx... oh and the new e-maxx is water proof... but dont let that get to your head... its only as water proof as you keep it... beat it and things will crack and leak... and..... zap pop crackel smoke... poof!!! no more truck.

a store will have it for more. so as long as you order the right truck it will be the same.
batteries... you can get from a store since you can ask and tell them what you have and they can better help you match your wallet +your truck+ and wants better.

there is sooo much to talk about when first getting into it. but doing a little research on your side might help... like batteries and brushless motors vs brushed motors...
i for one. the next truck i get will be the new e-maxx brushless edition with some high output set of lipo batteries...
lipo batteries need to be researched on your own for sure.. there is to much for me to mention... other than.. they are much much more dangerous than any other hobby battery you can think of... think im joking.. youtube "lipo fire" very dangerous if not handled correctly. and of course taking care of them.
but lipo is oh so worth it. for run times and power. not only is brushless for power but lipo is like 4 fold more. over the best NiMh battery.

DirtyMechanic

so gas trucks are no good anymore
well they are if you know how to tune them and take care of them... there is more time and maintance required to keep them running... air filter has to be done every 3-4 runs. gas is lol lets just say $30 a gallon... that you have to buy. yes it depends on the size of the motor but for a off-road truck a larger motor.... more gas... weather and tuning can be a issue. it take a real good ear to hear if its lean or rich. hot or cold. and all this will determine how much power your making. and sluggish the truck is. electric is... charge battery... on switch.... GO!!!!!!
and gas is getting more expensive to. something about the nitro methonal production is china is being lowered or something.... idk... but nitro is nice for the sound which electric has really nothing so you can run it just about anywhere anytime. unlike nitro. im serious when i say the t-maxx and the gas car i have are the last nitro stuff i have. next is that e-maxx brushless... i had the first version of the e-maxx years ago and i killed it really when i went back and forth with that and the nitro car... then i was... "tricked" into getting the t-maxx since i knew the nitro motor and the maxx platform... soo the new 3.3 t-maxx was natural... now they re did the e-maxx... aka e-maxx waterproof. and now updated the gen II e-maxx with a brushless option form the factory... which i didnt have brushless way back when... and after seeing the runtimes and power of a brushless lipo setup.... OMG not going back to nitro at all... a truck can be doing 30-40mph real speed not scale... hit full throttle while going that speed... and pull a wheelie like its nothing. on its way to 60+mph... right there sold me on brushless and lipo and the run times on a good battery can be up to 30-60 mins depending on the truck size and weight and itchy throttle finger. and no gas to buy at 27.99 a gallon.

damn i believed u just changed my mind bout that....so electric trucks can go that fast
umm.... fast is a under statement.... less maintance way way WAY!!!! less... just keep the batteries charged or stored half chargered or whatever they need to be... and thats really about it....
nitro.... ugh... have to put after run in the motor and turn it over to help keep the moisture out and keep i from rusting depending on how long you let it sit... glow plugs... aka spark plugs go out randomly... might have a good one that will last 3 gallons.... or one that might last barely a tank of gas or not even a tank... barely getting the truck started or not even.... weather you have pull start or starter motor... you WILL have issues later... period... it has gotten OH SO much better will the new trucks and stuff but there will be problems.... start motor needs a battery to be charged... then the truck needs a battery for radio equipment that needs to be charged here and there.... see where im going with this... there is soooo much more than just
charge battery... radio controls has batteries... check for broken parts check for wear and tear once in a while.... BASH TILL YOU BREAK SOMTHING!!!!!!!! you will break something... period... if your new... might be sooner than later depending on your skill learning speed and how patient you are will getting to know your truck.

Hit a 3 inch poll today and shattered the front control arm. WOW. The second it hit it cut itself off somehow and the body exploded off of it. The truck was MOVING when it smacked that thing!

Man i had already ran it through 3 full 5000 mAh NiMh batteries and it was super freaking awesome. Sadly it was the only pole for miles. I have a ton of goodies and other replacement parts coming for my LiPo setup and for the truck but the arms wont be in stock at tower until late january, so im taking a break. If you guys know of a good spot for bashing we can go ahead and start preparing for a meet in say late February.

ps story time
OH yeah finally got my pipe and header on the t-maxx... but of course when trying to put it on had to take the chassis off the frame rails... sooo that means tranny comes out too... well.. the tranny after... err... 4 gallons of fuel. sounded a bit dry... well in order to tear down the tranny the brake disc has to come off... well it didnt... sooo i had to presude it... well that just made me feel like i had to upgrade it... well that lead to going to hobbytown to see my good old buddy phill. to show him the disc that wont come off and maybe to upgrade... well... finally got it off.. no seriious damage still could have used it just fine. but thats boring after all that work that i had to do to take it off. sooo UPGRADE!!! vented disc now... but its not a direct swap at all... sooo as i was there phill first said it didnt work... naw... its R/C stuff we can make it work... soo after finding that the front drive shaft had to be updated to the updated 3.3t-maxx or revo front drive shaft. which i knew about well before and was going to upgrade when i break the center drive shafts. well i had those parts already... sweet.
not so sweet... needed longer output layshaft inside the tranny so the disc can line up with the new front output yoke and brake pads... well... thats just fine... after remembering the new upsdated 3.3t-maxx is 30mm longer makes sense... well the upddated t-maxx is forward only and the shaft is well forward only so a converstion kit is needed. if it didnt mind losing reverse... i like reverse gets me out of trouble err sometimes.... but remembered that while looking at this new forward only t-maxx they had a reverse kit for it... BINGO!!!! found the kit!!! $50!!!! FUCK THAT!!!! soo we found the kit parts list. and found just the shaft... soo 7.50 for the shaft sure not a problem... so 19.99 for the new disc and 7.50 for the shafter... and idk how much for the center updated drive shafts that i already had ready when i break them... and done...
well....... not so much... had all the parts. not everything was drop in... chassis had to be wided in the front for the new center drive shafts which are oh so nice and bigger and stronger and able to be rebuilt.
but this was ALLLLL after i had to drill a hole in the chassis for the new pipe to point straight down. which was all fun in itself... not... removing everything from the chassis. well i figured ill mount the motor in its place and mark and drill the hole... well in order to find the right spot i had to have the chassis in the car... well after putting the tranny on the chassis i found that the front drive shaft hole had to be wided. and the throttle servo modified... ugh... so a few hours later and a hour with a sideways cutting bit on the dremel the hole was just fine for the center drive shaft.
so if your trying to keep up with my dribble tranny is fit and finished rebuilt and repacked cleaned and relubed.. brake disc on with updated front driveshaft. yes woot... ok
motor put in it finally spot... yay.... hole marked in chassis to be drill for the new pipe... yay... boooooo remove everything front chassis to drill... drill.... YAY!!!! reinstall everything... put back into truck frame rail... booo..... motor needs to be removed to put in the chassis screws in the back to the rear bulkheads... ugh.... more ugh front new updated front shaft is... well... a million times to long... ahhh... dremel time... a hour later after cutting and re cutting the front drive shaft to get it to shorten up to get it to fit. yay drive shafts are in and tranny in finally finally in... now motor... removed... bulk head bolts are in... pipe is on and the hanger for the new pipe... after.. idk 2 hours of bending and fitting the pipes lines up perfect with hole...
tranny in
drive shaft in sized and clearanced
motor in
pipe in and hanged
hole drilled
soo after about 6-7 hours of total time... all i need now is fuel hoes to re run the new pressure line and new fuel line... then... cage get put on...
will have pics hopefully tomorrow of the new pipe and what i can of the new disc. new fuel and pressure lines and of course... the cage!!!!
http://www.traxxas.com/v2/products/accessories/5364X-disc-brake.jpg
all that for a new brake disc, and center drive shafts. pipe could have been put on in a hour... but no... winter= down time. equals.. idle hands and a very bad urge to modify anything and everything... lol

You know if this thing breaks while we're bashing we get to make fun of you for dumping 1000 bucks in it right? Haha.
I have:
LiPo Duratrax battery
LiPo Sack
Onyx 230 LiPo/NiMh Charger
Electrifly Equinox Balancer
Brushless System with built in LiPo LV Cutoff
I'm waiting on:
Balancer to LiPo adapter
New 2 sided tape as i somehow ripped the electronics off
Beadlocks
HPI Composite Nylon Front suspension arms
09 Silverado SC body
Paint
Heavier weight shock oil
Maybe a few cheapy LiPos.
Ive ordered half that list, ill order the other half in February. This hobby is starting to be too much like real cars.

i have not dumped 1000 in the t-maxx.... yet... not even close... ok..
lets see all the parts i added... not replaced because i broke..
spool... $12 best thing in the world!!!
cage... $30 best friend got it for my birthday last year
pipe... $65 got it for me for my birthday
RPM skid plates... $15 years and years ago i stole them form the e-maxx
front RPM a-arms... $12 broke one arm when i didnt see a concert stone in the middle of a grass feild... hit it wrong err just right to take out a a-arm... UPgrade time.. RPM=given.
brake disc $20
output lay shaft for disc $8
updated center drive shafts... err $20 total in parts?
thats about it i added.... now that doesnt take in that amount of time i have in taking it apart to modify the diff for lsd with springs for the rear... finding out its not limited slip enough... remove that rear lsd diff put it in the front. then take the front open diff and replace that with a spool...
this whole brake disc+pipe thing was the biggest thing ive done... and the first time ive cracked the tranny open to completely clean and relube. which took a good while to do alone.
i love doing it all though... especailly in the winter, so much down time. would have liked it that much if the weather was warmer and had time to run it.

ok first leave the film on the outside of the truck till you are DONE i mean DONE!!! like body is cut out holes drill for body posts everything i mean DONE!!!!
you paint the inside so the outside when you take the film off the outside looks clean and smooth. especially if you use mutliple colors and use tape to make a design. you wont see the ridges on the outside. the inside you will or might. you only have to tape one color off and not have to protect the first color from the second or third. just overspray the first and it will look seamless. just look online for a few tips and how to do it. it does take a few bodies to really get a hand on it.
and cutting the body out is a art. you can alway cut more off if you need to. so dont go wild on the first cut. use a sharp knife aka exacto knife or body sissors which are very nice, i finally bought some. but make a rough cut around drill the body holes then go back and forth between cutting and fitting on the truck/car.

i was jumping my house, cars, and going for double and triple back flips off of 5 foot tall dirt ramps. i asnt just going out and hauling ass on some dirt. i bought that thing to jump it and jumping it is exactly what i did! you ever put a peice of ply wood against your car to make a ramp out of it? it works pretty good and you get some awesome hang time! i broke control arms, motor mounts the bodies were obviosuly trashed a few times, when i sold it the trans housing was cracked and it was in need of a new frame as well.

Hell yeah!!! We used to put the plywood on the hood of a truck and jump it. You definitly trash trucks when your practicing flips. Landing on the roof is the worst. Check out a BMX track if you have one close by and jump the banks. Just go straight over them....you'll get like 20 feet high or more depending on how fast you get.

I'm also absolutely terrible at painting these. In fact, I'm terrible at painting anything.
Anyway, I just found an HPI Super Nitro with some nice parts and an unbeatable price, so I bought it. $110 shipped: http://www.rctech.net/forum/r-c-items-sale-trade/361507-mugen-hpi.html
This brings me up to 6 RCs total: HPI Micro RS4, RS4 3 Evo, Pro 4, Savage X SS, and now Super Nitro. The 6th is an electric Evader. I think I'm going to let go of the Pro 4 because (1) it's a shelf queen because I don't have time/batteries for it, and that's no way for a race car to be; (2) I am physically out of space in my dorm room, so it literally needs to be gone to fit the SN; (3) I wouldn't mind the money.
I'll get some pictures of the whole fleet when the Super Nitro gets here. HPI should send me something for brand loyalty.

Sporting the sick GT-one body. Not the paint scheme I would have done, but whatever.
I've also started CADing up some of the carbon fiber pieces. They're pretty rare since the Super's been discontinued for a number of years, and once I finish I'll post up the CAD files somewhere so people can take them to a machinist if they're really determined to make their own.

I'm also going to design a custom chassis like I did for my Evo. The only other things I have planned for it are new belts all around, a little bit taller gearing, and I think an OS .18TZ would work very nicely.

The new Super Nitro. For $110 shipped I got a car with carbon fiber deck, y-brace, shock towers, 2-speed, front and rear universals, OS .15 with lightweight flywheel and racing clutch, fiber brake, full set of spare tires. Maybe the best deal ever.
Next to my RS4 3 Evo.
Evo with my Pro 4, soon to be sold.
Front shock tower.
I'm also going to design a custom chassis like I did for my Evo. The only other things I have planned for it are new belts all around, a little bit taller gearing, and I think an OS .18TZ would work very nicely.
Here's a picture of all my HPIs in one shot (minus the Micro, it's at home in Atlanta)
i have a HPI too and wanted a .18 TZ but they only really come with pilot shafts... and we need standard crank shafts. which is $60 buy themselves. which i mean is a straight replacement but thats another 60 on top of the motor itself.

The pull-start, rotary-carb version comes with a standard crank. Drops right in:

I'm not a fan of rotary carbs, but I don't feel like buying a starter box + batteries for it and then lugging it out every time I want to start my damn cars.
Once I sell the Pro, that money will go straight to a TZ. In the meantime I'm going to move the .18CV-R from the Evo into the Super, since the .15CV I got with the car is bump start.

hey dont knock the bump start so much. i love it. so much more power and speed when starting. you dont have to worry about having enough rpm to get a bad carb tune to start.
i got a friend that has a .18TZ for sale. slide carb too but a pilot shaft. he said only broken in and a few tanks more. if your interested.
which i think is the only way to go. and why i said the ones we need is only pilot shafts. got ahead of myself. i need a bump start standard shaft slide carb .18TZ for my

Haha yeah I'm not trying to diss the bump start, I'm sure I'll be hating my decision when I'm blistering my hands from tugging on that cord over and over during break in. But if I do go the starter box route we'll be stuck in the same boat anyway without the standard shaft...
What HPI car do you run?

the starter box will help soooo much with a TZ since that piston to wall clearance is basicly nothing. compression is silly. i could turn the motor over with the fly wheel without some serious effort.

Nice. I've never seen a Nitro 2 in person but it seems like the Super is a pretty similar layout, just stretched out.
Does this happen to anyone else? Every time I order from Tower, I look for a coupon code. I'm buying $32 worth of stuff, and I found a "$20 off $50" coupon online. So now I'm basically looking for $18 worth of free stuff haha. Love these coupons.

and damn you on the coupons. i havent ordered anything from them in years!!! i have a buddy now at hobbytown usa in gwinnett so i go over and see him quite often. and hes a little more knowledgeable in some things when i decide to upgrade and stuff.

Sounds like the right guy. I spent a lot of yesterday coming up with the $18 in free parts I wanted from tower, only to proceed to checkout and get flagged for not qualifying for the coupon code. It was only for people who got the fliers. Sucks. I need to put my order in anyway so that I can rebuild the Super with the .18CV.
And I think I'm going to go ahead and try to find a cheap starter box. Anyone have anything?

its painfully simple, it uses a splitter so the front and rear servo use the same signal, the guy i bought it from made a little bracket and connected the servo to the rear control arms. theres also a bolt it uses for a pivot point.

well i find with bashing its the fun of trying to find somewhere and when you find somewhere what jumps and stuff you can find... then with those jumps and stuff see how high and far you can go... or if you find some serious rough stuff see if you can get through and over it all.
