It's hard to say. They were both great so I would give it a tie.

Its not just the hype, I think Heath was legitimately a much better Joker. I was blown away by his interpretation.

Ledger, I mean how dedicated do you have to have to stay in character soooo long, that it drives you mad, then makes you OD????

^ True that, did they confirm that it was due to the joker role?

I never saw Jack play the role.

I think it's pretty hard to say actually. I'll never forget Nicholson's laugh as the joker, but let's be realistic here though... Ledger had some huge shoes to fill with this role, and did about as good a job as anyone could do.

Heath Ledger by a mile. Scratch that -- Heath Ledger by 1,000 miles.

Nicholson was great, but he wasnt the joke IMO. He played himself in makeup.

IF you really want to know who played the ROLE better, Ledger was better. The joker was a dark, demented, crazy character and ledger pulled it off. Its the joker we all wanted to see.

Nicholson was more flamboyant and not edgy enough.

but then again i think there were 2 versions of the joker. There was the 50s-80s style which was a clown who was funny and did diabolical things.

Then there is Ledgers character which was part of the whole Frank Miller DARK KNIGHT interpretation of what the Joker was.

In all honesty you cant really compare them, 2 different portrayals

Jack Nicholson is great in anything, but he was funnier playing the Joker than Heath Ledger... I think if your supose to be the Joker, your supose to be funny in a way!

You cant compare. But i did vote for jack. He even came out and said he was made he didnt get offered the role and he warned heath that the role would fuck with his head

How can you place a bet on an opinionated question such as this? Both did outstanding jobs playing the role.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again (and in agreeance to Mr.KIDD). You can't compare the two. The joker for the old Batman movie was supposed to be based on the character and comics from that time period. Nothing was really DARK about the series then. You had a crazy guy commiting crimes, would get thrown in jail all the time or barely escape, and that kept the series going.

Now you have a new crowd to appeal to, one that wants it to be like a giant graphic novel. Thanks to all the horror and dark stuff that happens in both movies and GNs, it's expected that the role would have to reach out to that crowd. That's what Heath was going for. They didn't want character developement with the joker. They wanted the movie to feel more "real", with a crazed psychopath running rampant creating destruction.

It's a tie really. You can't say one did better than the other. Jack did the role VERY well for what it was targeting, and Heath did the same.

Not a fair question to ask.

Heath Ledger played a dark joker for our age, sadistic and calculatingly insane.

Jack Nicholson played the classic arch nemesis of the do-gooder batman.

Also Jack Nicholson had a series of movies to establish his character, whereas Heath only had a single movie.

They played 2 completely different characters that happened to share the same name.

The replies in here = :lmfao: look at the passion!

ubers2k- It's more simple than you think!

Props to you guys for really breaking it down, who would've know of the intricacy?

In all honesty you cant really compare them, 2 different portrayalsExactly. The Joker wasn't ever really designed to be this dark of a character. It's all a modern interpretation to give out sadistic society what it wants. Things were different back then and it's almost impossible to compare.

Besides, we all know who the real Joker is...

I liked Heath's portrayal better (don't get me wrong, I'm also a big fan of Nicholson's), but like everybody else is saying, the movies portrayed them in two different lights. So, you really can't compare.

Also Jack Nicholson had a series of movies to establish his character, whereas Heath only had a single movie.

Que? If I'm understanding what you mean correctly, then you're wrong.
