I have a "secret" project going on and we decided not to go boost. I was looking at ways of upping the compression. I seen a couple of articles that says the SOHC KA24E pistons will raise the compression. My question is how much will it raise the compression by and what else can I do to get more power out of this engine besides blowing the bank account wide open. If I go .020 over bore, will that decrease the compression any? BTW, we're gonna abe running the Crower stage 2 cams and have the engine balanced, if that helps any.

I wouldnt waste your money trying to get 160-170whp out of a ka. "IF" I were you, I would look into a sr20de that can be picked up from jhot for $500-600, then get a sr20ve head $400-$600. That head on a de block nets 11.0:1 cr, putting down roughly 190whp. Throw some N1 cams and a header, and sit well into the 200's. Though torque will only be about 160, its still the same amount as you'd net with the ka for the same price.

Ok, let me leak a lil bit of my secret project. It's an old school RWD pickup with no room for an intercooler and the KA has multiple parts available. Besides, if you can make power out of any engine if you go about it the right way. SR20DE parts aren't as easy to come by as they are for the KA.

You can get any sr20de parts from autozone, Nissan, pepboys etc. But either way, if you want to stick to the KA, simple mods I can think of for the ka is removing the clutch fan and going with an electric fan. It made a pretty good improvement when I had a ka. Back in the day, I entertained doing what you are doing and going all out na ka. With a crank pulley, removed clutch fan, 3" catback, and intake and no cat, it made 154whp, and 149torque. Going with high cr, cams, and intake manifold you'll probably get around 175whp. It would cost $$$ though. One thing you could do for cheap is supercharge it. I supercharged a sentra for $250 including a mercedes supercharger, piping, bolts and gromets, rb25 side mount and a supra bypass valve.
Cheap as crap, make 200+ for the cost of an exhaust. If you want 250-300hp, you would have to drop another $700-1000 for a safc, injectors, and clutch etc.. So it just depends how much power you want. If you are happy with 200whp, then look into supercharging it for under $500 with stock fuel, stock computer and clutch, but after that point stock crap wont be able to withstand more power and its the line where you will need a good $1000+ to proceed. If you want a 200whp NA 4 banger, and dont want to spend rb26 prices, then look into a sr20de/ve hybrid. If your happy with 160-170whp, then stick to the na ka.

Oh, one more thing. Back in the day I ran 2 exhaust cams. I dont know if people mess with doing that nodays. But basically I replaced the intake cam with a 1991-93 248duration exhaust cam. Running two exhast cams. Them motor "cammed" like crazy, lost bottom end, but picked up good bit of top end, and reved out like an sr. Cam was like $50 from the junkyard, but it was tricky to allign it correctly since its you cant use any of the markers, so you will have to eyeball it. Took me 2 trys before I got it on the right tooth. Thats one more cheap as crap thing you can do with the ka for 5-10hp.

Alot of the parts we had was already sitting around. As it stands, the KA is the only option. There's no option of another engine. That means more $$$ that we can't afford to dish out. I wanted to know if anyone had heard of installing the SOHC pistons into the DOHC block and if so, how much compression would it take it to. I'm about a mouse button away from buying the SOHC pistons if the comp isn't too high. We're already ordered stage 2 cams, the block is fully dissasembled. It's about to go to the machine shop as soon as we order pistons for it. It's gonna be bored .020 over. So does anyone know anything about it? Thanks for your opinions.
