View Full Version : Worklog: Revival of a Fairlady Z

JessAlba452

Purchased this car for a project, and I think I've got it! This will just be a worklog to keep track of mods and maybe even help others out there who are working on their own cars.

Keep in mind I'm kind of new to this, but everything is constantly a learning experience. If you have any questions or want to know how something is done feel free to ask.

If you feel like commenting please keep it positive ;)

Interior has been mostly stripped leaving the seats and carpet. This will allow me to take time to find the black trim pieces and re-upholster panels.

Can't wait to replace the worn steering wheel. This is common on these cars.

Recieved some leather goodies in the mail :D Looks great and will really tie the interior/exterior together.

Order of black Alcantara suede came in also, has a very nice plush feel to it.

http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_1895.jpg

Example of what I started with. Most of the suede panels were worn from age or water.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_1795.jpg

After late nights and sore fingers here is the result. It's going to look sweeeetttt I can't wait until everything is done lol.

Black carpet waiting to be installed. It looks tough, we'll see though. If I can't do it, might just have to take it somewhere to be done.

everybody seems to be confused as to what fairlady means.

Fairlady is a name that was given to the 300zx in Japan, but in the US the name was taken off and simply 300zx.

The title of the thread has to do with the modifications to be done to the car and incorporating some JDM parts.

Andy_013

you may want to edit the invoice (take off your name and addy)

I would have left the white interior, but the black will look good

Thanks! I forgot to do that lol.

I liked the white interior for it being rare, but wanted a cleaner look without worries of keeping it constantly clean. But the black/red will look great once finished. :D

I got the suede from Gulf Fabrics it sells for $89/yd. If you look up Alcantara suede you will know why. :) Don't do what I did and go to JoAnn Fabrics. That is what I did at first and ended up pulling my panels to re-do them.

Go with something that is UV protected unless you want to do it over again in a year or so, due to fading.

Best I can recommend is the automotive upholstery brands from:

Novasuede - $10 cheaper
Ultrasuede

The adhesive used is 3M Super 90. You can find it at Lowes/Home Depot. Don't go lower than 90 :)

Hey what's up! Yep lol finally, been wanting one forever and wanted a convertible just for it being rare. Not as rare as the slicktop of course, but I'm happy.

LoL I had second thoughts about posting this up thinking it wouldn't get much praise since most of the members here have Honda's.

But all of us are car enthusiasts so I hope that you guys enjoy the work!

I'm a lady ;), but love the compliments all the same. LoL the name and address that was on the invoice was from someone else.

Of course I will take lots of pix :goodjob:

How well does that stuff wrap around rounded edges and all that? Would it work on a dash? You think it would be possible to do it without pulling the dash...i really really dont want to do that...

JessAlba452
10-12-2008, 01:09 AM
It isn't the best to work with on very tight corners. Curves are fine and also covering edges, but once you start pulling it very tight so that it can get around a corner it starts to wrinkle.

Best bet would be to take out the dash. It will save you a heck of a clean up / masking job.

I will ask around for you though on a suede material that can stretch well. If it's for the dash you definately want it to be UV protected since that part of the car is in direct sunlight most of the time.

Oh and just to be kind of random...

A pic of a REAL Fairlady Z when I was in Japan for 3 weeks in September. It was the CLEANEST one I've seen and it's a pretty rare sight since they charge more on taxes the older the car is.

Might have fell in love with it lol but I can't cheat on the one I've got at home. No one said I couldn't take pictures though!

10-12-2008, 02:25 PM
LoL I know how that is...common problem I heard is the rear main seal and valve cover.

Two of those things which I will replace sometime. Either before or after the swap.

Looking to put in a 6spd transmission, but haven`t heard of or found anything that will bolt up with minimal modification. Also need it to hold up to the hp I am planning to do.

As for motors thought about LS1, but just won't feel quite right in the engine bay even though it sounds and looks sick. Also thought of RB26TT, but that means no emissions.

The search is still on!

All nissan Z-cars are known as fairlady Zs in japan! In the US they used engine size and model number for the Z cars. Also minor differences in the fairladys and the US version Z car. engine sizes, emissions, and safety.

Nice work on the z32! I like the black and red. but the frost interior and the red exterior would have looked better

Looks good so far, glad to see you got a Z! I wouldn't recommend that 6 speed though cause most of the ones i've seen are pointless as far as the gearing goes. I would highly recommend the '97+ z32 trans, it's a LOT stronger! but that's just my :2cents:. Let me know if ya need any TT parts too.

That is true lol :D I've been told to keep the white on black since it's rare, but didn't want the interior to easily get dirty.

I've been hearing the same from almost everyone about the transmission. Sometimes just feels like you need that extra gear lol :D Will look into the '97+ though. No one has mentioned it to me before, and didn't even think of looking them up.

I may have to take you up on your offer on TT parts when the time comes. Also need some local help when the swap starts ;)

nice
Thanks!

LS6 would be sick in there...but looks good man, keep up the good work
It really would :D If only it didn't require a lot of fabrication to get it to work. Probrably will stay with the TT to keep things as original too. Thanks!

yeah definitley got for the 97+ tranny, plus a 350z trans is no where near as strong as a 300zx trans, so that would honestly be a waste of money. N please keep the VG30DETT!!!!!!

UPDATE - 10/17/08 - Feels like X-mas!

Pics of the items I recently recieved. I think that about covers everything for the interior. Cannot wait to install. I may take the seats and carpet to a shop so they are professionally done, but still will take a look and see if I can't do this on my own first.

Will be sound deadening this week :D

Not too much progress on the Z lately.

I'm so ready for a TT swap lol. Last week something happened while driving and now it's making a strange sound.

Does a metal whiring sound through all gears. Reminds me of listening to a circular saw in the background haha.

A video clip of just neutral you can hear it especially starting at :47 seconds.

http://bp.fiveforty.net/flv-play.pl/video/z32.mp4?640x360

Was working on cleaning the cone intake filter. Soooo yummy and dirty.

So for now just staying busy with the interior, and I will post back once it's finished.

Hopefully will be pulling the engine soon. We shall see lol.

def tru about the honda build comment. OOO LOOK ANOTHER K SWAP OR OOOO ANOTHER GSR SWAP. Big deal....

A little bit of sound deadening. Closed cell foam from Second Skin Audio. Nothing extreme here, needed the foam for a little more padding under your feet. Most of the sound deadening sheets will be used for the trunk and doors to keep rattling to a minumum. Plan on installing an Image Dynamics IDQ 12v3

The VG will have forged internals for the same price of the swap of the RB without forged internals.

Read up on TT.net and there are plenty of members running 740cc with ~700hp without problems.

Thanks!

Working on the center dash piece to fit over the double din. There weren't any double din faceplates made for the 300zx except for the RHD version in Japan and it won't fit on the US version since the dash piece curves in the opposite direction.

When it's posted it'll be primered. The only thing I don't know about is how to finish it.

The idea right now is paint it black with Fairlady Z in red pearl text on the blank space above the headunit. 2nd idea is to maybe make it carbon fiber to match the shift knob.

Good thing is if I paint it first it can always be re-sanded down, but with cf it won't be as easy.

Ah well the VG30TT is what I'll be going with. The RB26 fits fine in the Z and it's been done a few times. Check out HybridZ.org and they've got a ton of crazy engine swaps.

I'm back with a quick teaser to make the thread interesting again. Was bored since it's cold out and decided to paint my toy Z car.

The color is the same color I will be using to paint the 'vert. It was a pain to mask everything off this thing. Used an air brush for the body. Took a paint marker an painted the inside of the wheels gold with a silver lip. :D

The red is almost like the original Red Cherry Pearl, but a little darker with more gold pearl in the paint.

Will be back later in the week with new mod pics. Been working slowly on it.

since your OBD1 you could pass emissions with an RB if you take the time to install a big enough catilytic converter.

but yea keep the vg I used to live 3 minutes from z1 and I have seen the owners 1000+hp monster on the track a few times.

I know you guys want more pics. Things have been a little slow.

I was going to have the RB26 since I haven't seen it done on any local z32, but it would probably have to be taken down to a single turbo to fit. For the price of a stock RB swap which I may be able to get 300rwhp out of. I could have a built stage 3 VG30DETT. So, the decision has been made lol.

We're going VG30DETT with ALL the goodies! :D

I need to learn how to do suede, I want to wrap my center console. Does it need to be stretched really tight, or can you just make sure it is smooth and be fine? I know I'm not about to pay the outrageous price to get it done somewhere.

JessAlba452
12-09-2008, 06:21 PM
It has to be stretched lightly not really tight :) At least so it doesn't wrinkle while you're laying it down.

Yes this was Redondo's car that he had for sale for along time. Got a pretty good price on it. Knew what I was going to do with it as soon as I got it. Plus it's still in the IA family :D

at least it is staying with car people to treat it good. he bought it from a worker at the nissan place. i believe that guy was the first owner.

If I don't use it I'll sell it for $175 still have to remove it for you, lmk if that would work? Just don't feel like re-painting this for the Z, and would like the cash to go towards the 99' Jspec.

Twin Turbo engine is going in on Wednesday and should take 2 weeks, expect an update soon ;) During that time I'll be stopping by Z1 to get more goodies.

We're installing the engine first to make sure everything runs correctly and is where it should be, before stripping everything out to paint the engine bay. This way if there are any issues the paint won't have to suffer multiple engine pulls/installs.

Sam at Tiger Racing will be doing the work he's also working on our other car there. He really knows his stuff so that was reassuring, plus he's a very cool + nice guy! :D

Stay tuned! (no pun lol)

I may be switching the nose panel with the emblem to a 1990 without emblem. It looks much cleaner that way. The US nose panels have an indent in the plastic for the nissan emblem and I'd rather trade than fill with bondo.

Ah my bumper looks different since it is NA the TT model comes with a different bumper with holes at the bottom to allow air for the side mount intercoolers. But I do have a 99 Jspec bumper. I need to work on it though since I got it used :) pics will be posted of a few things I've been working on.

Next I'd like to share with you all the goodies that I have collected for this build the last few weeks.

99 Jspec front bumper, purchased used for $250 what a deal! I just need to delete the licence bracket area, sand it back down and re-paint.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_3550.jpg

Front clip swag is awesome! Here is one of the JDM fenders which I'll be stripping down and primer. The passenger side is dented slightly and I'll need to work on it before giving it a good coat of primer. While at Z1 I'll be picking up 2 fender side lights.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_3551.jpg

On the trip to Nissan I ordered weather stripping for the front windshield that goes all the way around. Picked up the two 'vert handles that go on the compartment that holds the top.

What I have to wait on is the seal for the top above the driver side window and trunk seal.

Haha goes to show...doesn't matter what kind of car it is, as long as it's done right!

I have a set of Recaro Speed seats coming in from VividRacing, and should be a few weeks. Along with one 18x11 Work VS-XX to make sure it fits in the rear. If not then I will have to go with a 10.5" width and run lower offset for the lip.

For the seats this is the style I went with to match with the interior.

Yea I will do it on stock suspension for quick reference. Just to see if it's possible. Hardly anyone has 11 on their 300zx unless they need something like 13" wide for their widebody z32. Will probably need to run a little camber in the rear -2 or so to get the tire to barely tuck under the fender.

I just read through this entire thread and I have to say this is one of the most dedicated efforts on a car build I've seen in a long time. You have done everything right so far and made everything look so awesome! I've never seen someone start with the interior first, props! and I will definitely be checking in on this thread from week to week.

good luck can't wait to see it with the sides and the new front bumper on, especially with you putting my favorite wheels on there ;)

Thank you so much :D Really appreciate the great comments!

Took about 1hr for both sides including reinstalling the hoses which were not fun at all, way tight in the engine bay. It ran better, but after 100 miles it came back. Next is to check the IACV...it's always something else lol.

If only I could! :D TigerRacing is a small shop and doesn't have the means to fund a large build. Z1 on the other hand builds every day, but probably wouldn't want to waste their time. Best I can do is get discounts on items here and there.

LoL and Nissan...we all know that's a whole other story.

Thanks! I try to get most of the details, without being overly tacky. Trying to keep it simple, I guess is the word :D

Will try to get more pics. Been really sick this week so no updates. I really need to finish putting the interior back together. Been having fitment issues argh! Always easier to take something apart than it is to put back together.

I have ordered a new convertible top though and it should be here by the end of the week. Will have to find someone to install it for me since I've heard it's VERY difficult.

Few other goodies are also on their way, and that will be my next update.

I really don't know. LoL jk I learned most of this by just hanging out with friends that knew about cars and reading forums. Trial and error of course helps too!

Thanks! I can't wait until it's done either and dyno or track would be fun! It's not all about show or go. It's about BOTH!

I'm about to go to the store to pick up some LEDs so I can change the pods and then order some LED bulbs for the dash.

But I don't know what color combo to go with! At first I wanted ALL red to match, but then it may just be too much. Opinions would be greatly appreciated! :D

So I thought of these colors to pick from or mix.

Gold
Red
White

Combo colors:
Gold gauge pods / Red Dash
Red gauge pods/ Gold Dash
White gauge pods / Red Dash
Red gauge pods / White Dash

Not really feeling the ALL red that's why I'm thinking of mixing it up. Image from a 300zxclub member :)

Kind of what I want to do...but with white leds instead of blue gauge pods.

Maybe you could talk Z1 into covering the labor charges for building the motor? They dont have to fund the whole thing, but would help right? Just tell em you'll rock the vinyl and take it to some shows.

JessAlba452
01-29-2009, 04:16 AM
Going with all white with red accents on the gauge pods. Will match the dash since it has red needles.

Placed an order for 300 LED's red white and blue so I could do the mod for other members if they wanted.

If only Z1 would do that lol that'd be too cool! :D Great idea LS2ner!

LoL :D That's right.

I'm debating wether to go with ImportPartsPro or Z1 Motorsports for the longblock. If not going with either then maybe build it in the garage and source out a machine shop for the block. Might be cheaper that way.

White LED's are in for the gauges, and still waiting on those 300, 3mm LED's to arrive. Should be sometime this week for the pods.

Other than that the new driveshaft is being installed and a few more goodies have arrived. Waiting on more before doing another pic update.

UPDATE: 2/4/09 Minor interior details and some goodies!

So um making a double post...but I bring PICs!!!

If you wonder why the doors are still off, I'm waiting on some audio to arrive. Haha you know it doesn't take me months to reinstall the panels!

CF throttle cable cover from IonicDynamics great craftsmanship on this part, only thing if you are buying this is you'll need to drill your own holes for bolts.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_3806.jpg

Laser etched stainless steel strip applied to give it that touch of detail. Looks good and will match with the Nismo CF shift knob. This will be the theme of the engine bay. Black/CF/Chrome maybe red accents here and there.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_3809.jpg

Stock and dim yellow courtesy lights, I couldn't see anything in the dark if it weren't for the light in the garage.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_3939.jpg

Stock gauge lights, they weren't as bad as I've seen in other cars but if I'm changing the other lights might as well do them all!
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/JessAlbaDrkAngl/Z%20Car%20Overhaul/IMG_3945.jpg

Package from autolumination arrives, with an assortment of LED goods!

~4: #74 Bulbs (map/courtesy lights)
~5: 194/168 bulbs (dash)
~5: 194/168 wedge bulbs (exterior)

I always get 1 extra, just to have it handy as a back up in case one doesn't work.

White LED's non wedge installed into the dash. Slight hot spots, even with the tops of the leds sanded to diffuse the light. Don't pay attention to the mileage haha. Dash took about 20 mins to remove so it's easy. Thinking of changing the green ignition ring to red.
