I like them all. what lens did you take that with?
heres some advice. Normally when you compose a shot, you leave the subject out of the middle of the frame. however when you're trying to convey symmetry, its ok to center it, like #2

having a DSLR camera and live view helps. But if your camera can get down to at least a 1/1000 shutter speed, watch for the drop and snap it. Also adds to the depth effect if your camera has an apeture of f2.8. A quick burst mode helps too. The Nikon D3 can take 10 pictures every second. you can almost stitch a movie together w/ a burst rate like that

yeah those weren't too hard, i just put the flash up and turned the shutter speed as high as i could go with the flash on. i have a sony a100 which is probably about like like a mini-step higher than a d40 and i can do just about anything with it.
oh and the lens is just an 18-70.

1. I like them :)
2. Make the borders a little less overpowering on your photo.
3. If you have borders make them consistent in size.
