1 porsche boxster: Fails #2
2 older high mileage s2k - OK I guess
3 2001ish prelude OK but a bit heavy and not that fast
4 mazda miata - fun car but not very utility oriented and the ragtop thing can suck
5 older m3 - Possible problem with #1 and definitely fails #2
1 reliability
2 cost of maintenance(sp?)
3 coolness factor
4 speed
Ok I started looking and look what I found:

You shouldn't be influenced by what others think is cool... so throw your "coolness factor" out of the window. Like every other thread that's been posted much like this one, the default/cliche answer is :
"Test drive them all and find the one that YOU like best"

I would say Miata. Get an older one and you will have plenty of money to throw at it. However, if it were me, I'd be looking for a vr6 Gti.

From that list I would say a miata. Def not the porsche, the s2k would have VERY high mileage for 10k, miata > prelude imo, and the m3 would have very high mileage as well, unless you find a very good deal on the m3...def rwd though
Maybe look at 328's and such? The are quick, luxury, cool....what more could you want?

Put your Goat on a diet - start by removing the oil filter cover that weights freakin 35lb!
I'm not even kiddin - that thing is built like a skid plate and it does nothing but cover the oil filter.
To the OP: I think you're expecting too much.
You cant have speed + reliability + smashing good looks + fuel economy + great price.
If you do, please do give me a call as you must have uncovered some great missing truth.
All fast + good looking cars will suffer on mileage and all fast cheap cars will suffer reliability issues.
My vote in no order:
WRX
Accord
Newer BMW 3 series
Motorcycle (Brand spankin new R6 woo)

Naw I like my GTO slow and heavy. I feel like I am driving a tank and I don't even have to worry about using AAA.

I almost bought an 02 s2k with 70k miles on it for 12,000.
But if I had to stay under 10,000 I would go with a Mustang. They are so cheap right now because nobody wants a gas guzzling v8, you save enough on the price to justify spending more on gas imo.

wrx for 10? with 200k miles maybe
All under $10k and less than 90k on the odometer. Granted they probably aren't mint, but I don't think the price is outrageous (ie, there's probably nothing seriously wrong with them).

Not saying you should get one of those, just using them as examples. I'm pretty sure that with some searching you can find a decently nice bugeye (02-03) for around 10k.
In all honestly, I think an older M3 would be an awesome choice as well. You just have to realize (like others said) that it's not going to meet your criteria for having cheap maintenance.
