interesting article, coincides with the nurburgring runs.

The Cobalt SS was classified as a LL1 car (under $30,000) and it ran away from all the other cars in its class, but then it also did something no one was expecting. It beat every car in the LL2 class ($30,000 - $60,000), except for Mercedes C63 AMG. It took out the Mitsubishi EVO X MR, Lexus IS F, Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the aforementioned Lotus Elise SC; beating the latter by more than 3.6 seconds around the 4.2 mile road course.

all i could come up with

to me, giving up the SC whine isnt worth the extra 50 hp. Too addictive.

No, you have base models, ect ect then you have true SS s/c, and a rebadged Cobalt with all the appreance package. The new 'balts are gonna be the sh!t. Glad they lost the s/c for a turbo. Im going to be getting one when they drop.

Some cobalts were a ss/na. It was basically a high output ecotec makin 170hp or something. Ususally the ones with the big spoilers are sc'd ones w/low pro spoilers are ss/nas.

My car brand new in 2001 was only 47,500msrp its a Z06!

The new SS is definitely no slouch. But recently I've completely stopped caring about 'Ring times. There are just too many factors to decide which car is better by just looking at 'Ring times.

Me86Rob
10-03-2008, 06:00 PM
to be honest, i didnt really ever hear anything about ring times untill the GT-R came around.

stage2 SS/Supercharged is as fast as the Cobalt Turbo Charged

Dont waste your time on the regular pre 08 Cobalt SS's they were badged and had no performance at all. An RSX base model would rape the **** out of one.

How to tell?
Cobalt SS 2008+ will look like regular Cobalt SS's of yesteryear. They wont have a badge below the SS like the supercharged ones.

Main difference, low profile spoiler and the rims. However this one seems to have went with the high rise spoiler package. I think most are low-profile.

http://www.auto123.com/ArtImages/96782/2008-cobalt-turbo-SS-i01.jpg
turbo rims looked spoked

http://images.google.com/url?q=http://www.hat.net/album/north_america/canada/british_columbia/vancouver/car_show_2005/0129_chevrolet_cobalt_ss.jpg&usg=AFQjCNGCxtex4E6HGKg8uO2yYu2ymFSaBA
pre 2008 are solid. This one is supercharged, hence the little rectangular badge below the SS symbol

The blue balt is also a 2005 model. The first year they produced the Cobalts (like mine) they placed the badges halfway up the door. So if you see a regular SS badge halfway up the door without a Supercharged badge it means it is N/A most of the time.

Alot of Cobalt owners like to debadge it, slap on a TVS, hahn turbo, twincharge, or nOs it and own people who dont know wtf it is. Kinda funny the vids you will see on css.net.

Not a chance by a long shot. Under 30k so it cost in the high 20s? The SRT-4 started out at 19 and ran 13's. Now you can get them for 10-15k. SRT-4 BEST BANG FOR UR BUCK.

Actually I want to say they started around 22-23k. But I maybe wrong.

Mine was 22k and it was just a Srt-D (design).

I miss it. When I bought it w/ 0 miles, came with Srt-4 hood, spoiler, wheels.
when i added mods; srt-4 front bumper, rear bumper, exhaust (loud as fck), Driftz gunmetal 17's, cai, header. ended up trading it for my truck.....Crappy cell phone pic......

just because i have a balt and posting about a different one doesnt mean anything. Trust me, i know the limitations of my own car.

srt4 is by far, the best bang for your buck within 2000s. However it is discontinued, like the balt will be in 2012 and replaced with some econo-bucket 40 mpg. A fully loaded balt was running 22,500 last i checked. However, unlike the previous cobalts and srt4...there are no stage kits offered.

I kinda liked the 50 shot+pullied car being under warranty.

Being a balt owner... if u want something quick as a DD.... get an ms3. Better quality.

You can get Evos and STIs for 20s-25s. Given that its not brand new, it is a better bang for your buck instead of the srt or "balt"

problem is, every co-"balt" owner i know, they wont get a used sti or evo because they fear its been beaten to hell.

no doubt. it's a risk buying a performance used car like that. i bought mine from a friend with 20k miles, and i knew he took it autocrossing, but i also knew he took care of it, so i havent had any problems with it.

i would not touch a used evo/sti.....especially if anyone under the age of 30 owned it and i would make damn sure it was completely stock

The new Turbocharged Cobalt is not your regular econobox to laugh at. For the price you pay, you're getting some d@mned good performance and they don't look that bad IMO. Things are going to get nasty once people start properly tuning these things.
