23" on a 1979 Honda

What, not what you expected to see? Stock 23 inches on the front wheel. Hacked mine up and made this.

LOL, 23" is an odd size even for a dirtbike. Most all full size bikes of today run a 21" front wheel. Where the hell will you find a tire for it?

yea, it's a stock size! When the chopper guys started using bigger front wheels they had to run knobbies or shaved knobbies. Metzler makes a street 23 but pricey for my use.
I have just gotten a new tube and tire to install on the wheel. Most people dont stock them.
I hack off the rear fender and shortend it and turned up the rear portion of the seat frame. makes it a lot stubbier. I took the cover off the seat and cut the seat down. used some of the old foam to build up the back of the seat (cafe style). replaced the handle bars with a more drag bar stlye with a bar end mirror. repositioned foot pegs and levers. new handle grips. no gauges. custom exhaust exiting under seat through custom baffles made inhouse. Sanded metal gas tank to bar steel and clear coated it. bla bla.
Fun project. The big is a wheelie machine and can run over anything (which helps downtown ATL).
not to mention over 50mpgs.

i'd be very interested in something like this to ride to work daily.....what CC is that bike? 250? i know absolutely nothing about motorcycles, but love saving gas money and these things look fun.....also where would i find a good deal on an old one that might only require some work to get running?

That Honda is a XL500 (i.e. 500cc and a 5 speed)
I have been riding it to work and back of the past few weeks. Does fine on the highway around 80mph. Not sure how far over 100 it would go, but 80 is enough to get me to work. I would not go much lower then a 350cc if you plan to ever get on the highway. I have a 185 2 stroke enduro and it good for just a hair over 60 maybe. My RD350 2 stroke should be good for over 130mph but it's a 6 speed and set up like a track bike
(didnt even have a kick stand when I bought it:taun: )

These older dirt bikes are very reliable and tons of fun to ride. For the price you cant beat it. For 2,000 to 4,000 you can have a pretty trick bike that no one else will have and can be set up for your riding style.

I have a 2001 Ducati 748 with all the **** (2 up rear sprocket, fast by Ferrachi carbon cans, power comander, slipper clutch, lightened flywheel, ect...
what it came down to is most my riding is intown, on crappy roads, under 60 mph. I dont want to have to worry about paint, about someone trying to steal it, insuring it, and FIXING IT. check out prices on Ducati parts

Sold the Duc and bough a couple bikes that fit what I do, beat on em!

If you are interested I would be happy to help you find and convert a bike to what you are looking for.

ahh ok. Well i dont normally exceed 55-60 on my journey to work every day. the speed limit is actually 45 lol. Its a straight shot down 92 and back every day.....so even 60mph would work for me

yeah i'd definitely be interested. I was just looking at craigslist......you can actually find a few under $500.....though im sure they need several things.....only problem is i wouldnt have much more to spend on something like that as i'm already dropping a wad of cash on a new engine

It's better to start with a bike that runs then one that doesnt. People seem to think a good looking cheap bike that doensnt run is a better deal. i go for old ugly and reliable

Even at that price you could find something that wouldn't need a lot of work or money to get back in good shape. Honda bikes are unbreakable, the things never stop running. Find something like this guy's bike if you can and have it fixed, it's easy to do and relatively cheap if you pay someone else.

It's incredibly simple. I was putting bikes together when I was 12, if you have any mechanical knowledge you would be able to figure it out. Especially with an older Honda like the OP's.

I love crappy suspension. Just kidding. That is another xl500 I had. I forgot to take any picts of my other one before I hacked it up. Trust me, I am looking to convert my street fighter on to a mono shock (look cleaner)
Didnt realize that was my other bike till after i posted it. I swear I own more red\orange dirt bikes then I ever thought. At one time at my shop had an orange 1974 Suzuki TS185, orange Yamaha 200, 2 orange honda xl500, and an orange 1975 RD 350.
