Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.

I think the letter is funny as hell in a sad way. Bush didn't react for DAYS!!

its not bush's responsibility to react. this shouldn't be a federal issue. new orleans is a coastal city, you would think they had some sort of plan in place for something like this, especially since they knew it was a possibility. also days later, and neither the local or state government have done anything but point fingers at the federal government. where is the backbone? where are those officials now?

west coast cities have plans for earthquakes and very rarely does the federal government get involved, and when they have, they haven't needed the large numbers they are being criticized for not providing now. northern cities have plans for snow/blizzards and what the cities can't cover, the state does. where's the plan in new orleans/louisiana? why does the federal government have to build the levees? where has their tax money been going for the last 20 years? did mardi gras need more funding? also, where is the police/fire/medical personel in the area and why don't they have the equipment to do their job in a situation like this? sure its never happened to this degree, but they can still institute some kind of attempt to formulate a plan.

i think its ridiculous that the growing mentality is that the federal government needs to do everything. seriously, why don't we go ahead and convert to a socialist state and relieve all the stress that comes with decision making, thought, and dignity? Democracy, yes, but first a powerful government. Yes, lets do that and forget about the concept this country was founded on.

The local and state government should be figureing this out, heck raise taxes till you can pump the stuff out, but they should not be complaining because the federal government is taking too long to fix a problem they should have prepared for.

1st. New Orleans isnt a bvery rich city in the beginning
2nd. This is the first tiem in Us history that something like this has happen, a whole city deserted and flooded completly.
N.O. cant handle all this its not San Fran, it isnt New York its New ORleans They port alot of stuf formt he gulf there, but its not a rich city. its like having Dekalb couny just explode, and the state of GA not helping or waiting 4 days to do so

Here was the plan:

if it floods - the levees will keep the water back
If it goes over the levees - the puimps will pump
WHat happen?
The levees broke, and than the Pumps stopped working. They werent ready for it. They knew it COULD happen, but they wqerent ready for it. (/11 was pretty bad, but this is said to be worse.

It snot bush's repsonsibilty to act? WHAT, The governor needed help she didnt know what to do, who do u turn to? SHouldnt you be able to look to you leader for help? The levees were maintained byt the state, which is funded by the government... ill let you tell me who decides ont he funds for the state.

"where is the police/fire/medical personel in the area and why don't they have the equipment to do their job in a situation like this? sure its never happened to this degree, but they can still institute some kind of attempt to formulate a plan."

NO power - no communication - no gas - no way of getting around - no phones. Thats why everyone is upset...you basically are asking the SAME questions the ppl out ther are. And you are questioning why they are asking it. The state doesnt do its job, than u go higher up, and after 4 days, and there is still no plan form the government...what next?

THis aint new, they knew it could happen when they built the city but it never has. Just like the San Dreas Fault, one day there will be the Earthquakke that puts Cali under the same fate as Louisiana is.

HOw long shoudl it really take it to get helicopters out.. really any of us could have thought of a plan in 10 minutes.

yes, i'm sure you could have had an army of men organized and in the area in much less time right? shit doesn't happen instantly in life, we can't teleport people/trucks/food/water to N.O. in an instant. the real thing people need to see here is that there IS work going on that is attempting to get help to these people, but many of them are making it harder on themselves and others around them by causing bullshit trouble like looting and shooting at people randomly when they come to try and help. the roads can't clear themselves, the water won't suddenly dry up, and you can only fit so many helicopters in the same airspace. due to those delays, among the stupidity being displayed by many, things will take time to happen.

Michael Moore is the biggest disgrace to ever be born, Why can't people like him just leave the country if they are so displeased with it?, every hippie liberal dusche just sits around and complains but has no real ideas about what to do...and i specifically cannot stand the people that sit around and complain about Bush having a C average, or doing drugs, who gives a shit, I would rather have a person that knows what its like to be a REAL citizen, and not some Ivy League stuck up bitch, (ie: Kerry), nuff said

Bush is just proving what an inept leader he is. Micheal Moore has very good points. Bush cut there building funds three years in a row when they knew this could happen. This BS about building next to the ocean come on. They knew the danger and where asking for help, but it fell upon deaf ears. How much longer is this dipshit in office?

the buses got in there because they have been clearing a path for days to be able to bring them through. they can't call the buses until they clear a path... hell a fucking monster truck couldn't have gotten through most of those roads. again, the people causing trouble were not helping the situation at all. they had to go in and make the area safe for anyone to even attempt to rescue people because of dumbasses with guns thinking it would be fun to shoot at rescuers. there were national guard helicopters in there after the winds slowed enough to get them there and they were performing rescues immediately. problem is they don't keep a stockpile of national guard helicopters right next to NO, and only a few choppers can share the same airspace at a time. you have to look at the size of the area affected, NO is at the southern end of a long path of destruction. it's not like the storm only blocked the road within city limits or an immediate 10 mile radius, it was hundreds of miles of trashed roads to make passable for large equipment and supply chains.

Its hard to mount a rescue mission for 30,000+ people where there is no infastructure. The airport is ruined, airforce special forces had to be flown in to rebuild the airfield, Airforce combat controlers also had to be flown in because there were no airtraffic controlers around. Helicopters cant land anywhere and with limited space due to the flood waters helicopters pretty much have to land one at a time. People are shooting at the damn helicopters, so for a brief period of time there were no flights due to the insecurity. You cant blame this anyone really its just everything that could go wrong went wrong and there was no plan for it.

the buses werent called out until WEDNESDAY!, thats 2 days after they told everyone to leave. And there were ways to get out, b/c ppl WERE leaving in there cars, the problem was noone had gas in the city top leave. The shooters are stupid, fuck those idiots. The national gurads were there gettin ppl off the roofs. But im saying, everyone knew how bad it was gonna be. ANd the levvees broke monday right? And eveyrone kept saying "its gonna rise , its gonna rise" . Hell the president of FEMA just saw how bad it really is down there YESTERDAY. And he said to a reporter on CNN " i didnt know it was this bad". The reporter is like "what do u mean?, dont u watch TV?" I agree they did there best but cmon u know it could have been better, i dont blame the government, but i cant stand when people come down on the people when they couldnt leave.. ANd peopel starving to death on the streets should neve rhappen in the US.
