I just got a copy of Death Magnetic from Metallica, and I was wondering if anyone had heard it yet, and what they'd thought of it.
I know Metallica is a sensitive subject on some forums, because generally speaking they are a band you either love or hate, but I've spent most of my life growing up listening to these guys, and this album was quite a relief compared to the garbage they released on St.Anger. Although truthfully nothing seems to have quite the same feel as anything they released on the Black album or prior albums, although it is much closer to what you'd expect from them.

i personally cant stop listening to it. the complexity of it is what i would expect of Metallica from the 80s. now i know no one can fill Cliffs shoes when it comes to the classic bass style for Metallica but Rob is damn sure doing one hell of a job. the vocals however, do remind me of ReLoad. they're not bad, but they're not as good as the 80s. overall i think its a wonderful album. i mean a 10min long instrumental that is damn good. whats not to love? definately a pick up for any of the older Metallica fans
I love it! It was such a relief to finally hear something from them that was at least decent.

too bad the mixing actually sounds like ****. its distorted and is clipped almost most than RHCP calfornication. it sounds like **** when turned up loud because it so compressed to make it sound louder
i wish they would re-release in its original form without all of the overprocessing and clipping...then it would be listenable.
and if none of that makes sense...read

I think its a great album. You cannot really compare the old and new with a band thats been around as long as them. Think about it, they get older and less angry, they arent 21 and pissed off anymore.
My 2 favorite songs are The day that never comes & The Unforgiven 3. I would have never expected that I would like the slower songs the most but I do. I will go out on a limb and say its their 2nd best album. Yes, I love the old thrash but this is good stuff. This is metal, a lot of people think of metal as some fagg0ts dressed up as aliens screaming **** that no one understands aka GWAR.

You know what? **** metallica. The last time those ****ing jokers could call themselves metal, I was in 8th grade. Hetfeild can't write lyrics for **** either. They are so easy to guess, thoughtless, and shallow. This is from a former fan.
this is NOT metal.
Arsis is metal. Chimaira is metal. In Flames, Heaven Shall Burn, Soilwork, metal metal metal. Cephallic Carnage, Decapitated, metal.
This is just some tired old assholes looking to milk that last dollar, thinking that they actually lost something from people sharing their music on Napster. They are the biggest douchebags in the music industry.

My friend bought it..... Personally I'm not for buying CD's but I've listened to the whole album and it was pretty decent... That one song (Thinking of name) basically the Unforgiven 3... That one was the best IMO!

I think you are confusing death metal with metal or core metal (whatever these people call it), Now I dont consider In Flames, or soilwork (dont know the others) death metal, but Arsis, Chimaira are death metal, pretty much all Chimaira sings about is killing or beating someone to death, rarely any clean singing. Pantera is a fine example of what metal is, so pretty much there arent but maybe a handful of REAL metal bands left. Its Metallica, they had just become popular around the time we were probably born, Metals in the name, thats what they play.
Also, double bassing into infinity doesnt classify you as a metal band, just lack of creativity.

you are a retard. You were in 8th when i was in 9th and there was nothing but crap from LOAD and RELOAD in those days. That was not metal, that was rock being spewed out by their obligations to elektra records.
This album is a great album, a tribute to what they really can be. Honestly theres no way to produce anything like the old stuff exactly because recording technology has leaped so far that you cant make an album sound that ****ty, quality being the key there. Ride the lightning, master of puppets, kill 'm all, they are awesome but sound terrible. Death magnetic has master of puppets reminiscent all through out it.
You sir listed a bunch of death metal. Metal is not thrashing and growling. That crap you listed is terrible growling that 15 & 16 year old kids do in bands now a days spewing out of their vomit in a skate park.

Chimaira is a metalcore band, same with In Flames and Soilwork. A few of the others he listed (Decapitated, Arsis, etc.) are death metal.
Anyway, point is, there are different SUBGENRE of metal, so how anyone can say that what was listed isn't metal is beyond me. I personally haven't listened to the new Metallica album, except for one or two songs (and I don't even know the names of those), and I really don't like it. But then again, they killed it for me after Saint Anger came out.
And double bass can lead into some of the more technical stuff that newer bands are doing. You may not like or may not be able to understand them when being contorted, but listen to All Shall Perish's "There is No Work To Be Done on a Dead Planet" and tell me that the last half of that song isn't hard as ****.
a lot of people think of metal as some fagg0ts dressed up as aliens screaming **** that no one understands aka GWAR.
Hmmm... GWAR never screams, and they are pretty much joking around on stage the entire time, HAVING FUN. Oh, and I know a lot of people that can understand everything that they say. So don't bash on **** you get confused with.
If you like metal, great. Don't sit here and rag on different types because YOU don't like it. That makes you sound ignorant as hell., and definitely makes you out to be an idiot. :2cents:

I hope you realize that a lot of those "15 and 16 year old kids spewing out their vomit" have by far passed metallica in musical capability and talent. Don't make judgements about music you know nothing about. You talk about how Metallica can't be the same anymore, well the same goes for the entire genre of metal in itself. A lot of these bands are pushing the envelope and creating music that requires a lot more talent than anything Metallica ever did. I respect them a lot, they laid a lot of groundwork for what metal has become. But to have the idea that metal shouldn't change is kind of rediculous, the field of talent in metal now by far outweighs any other genre. Don't criticize bands for doing new things, it's pretty counterproductive for the genre as a whole for bands to keep doing the same old ****.

Its all the subgenre of metal that people precieve as just metal and older styles like Metallica is just "rock" or "alternative."
As far as the double bass goes, using it throughout an entire song (to me) seems like lack of creativity, there are other ways to create or maintain intesity in a song. Like Dimmu Borgir, that its just rediculous, he surely has twin dual hammer petals for the speed he achieves and maintains throughout almost the whole song every song, I like them alright, but they arent a favorite. My favorite drummer that I know of and have listened to for majority of my existence is Danny Carey (though not a metal drummer). He can be super technical and be intense with and without it.
GWAR, is GWAR. I really dont care for them, they may be there just to have a good time and not be serious, but I havent ever understood any lyrics and just cant bring myself to listen to a whole song. A new Genre is created every day it seems and gets harder and harder to "classify" bands I guess. Soilwork and In Flames albums could be divided into different ones. Their newer stuff is a LOT more clean singing and I really like it, but I also like the older stuff as well. Like Shadows Fall, their new stuff isnt as hard as they used to be.
You should give the new Metallica cd a listen, its nothing like St. Anger, its actually good in my opinion. I'm not trying to start a music argument, im not getting "smart" with my key strokes, just stating my opinions, as rash and be possibly better worded as they are/could be.
To the post above me, I think he was mostly implying that you dont have to grunt, growl and scream to be a "metal" band. That seems to be the mindset in young people.

If we are going to talk about lack of creativity that you nutswingers are yacking on about in death, melodic death, grindcore, whatever, we should really address the lack of creativity in the lyrics of metallica's music.
Born to push you around
Better just stay down
You pull away
He hits the flesh
You hit the ground
Mouth so full of lies
Tend to black your eyes
Just keep them closed
Keep praying
Just keep waiting
Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
But the son shine never comes, no
No, the son shine never comes
Push you cross that line
Just stay down this time
Hide in yourself,
Crawl in yourself,
You値l have your time
God I値l make them pay
Take it back one day
I値l end this day
I値l splatter color on this gray
Waiting for the one,
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
But the son shine never comes, no
Love is a four-letter word
And never spoken here
Love is a four-letter word
Here in this prison
I suffer this no longer,
I値l put an end to this I swear
This I swear
The son will shine
This I swear
This I swear
THIS I SWEAR!!!
what a bag of horse ****.
Here's Arsis' "Carnal Ways to Recreate The Heart"
I am the one, the fallen bastard son
I'll step inside you, I feel your lips
And seize your flesh, to penetrate the wound
And your screams shall be dreams
Of the graceless one's rebirth
Forever I have lost the way
To the flesh that was mine today
I left my trace I left my mark
Carnal ways to recreate the heart
Feel the pain and we know
And the pain we are cursed with child
To be with me, is to be left
I step away now, I'll leave your lips
And withered flesh, no more inside the wound
A badge of lust and wrong decisions
The cold hands of a cursed religion
A false idol to praise and worship
And coax these hellish times
To cut and paint my sins, a shade of purest white
To play the role of god, and recreate a life
I am the one, the fallen bastard son
I'll step inside you, I fell your lips
And seize your flesh tonight
A false idol to worship
And coax these hellish times
To play the role of god, and recreate a life
A badge of lust and wrong decisions
The cold hands of a cursed religion
To cut and paint my sins
A shade of purest white, I paint my sins in white!
Forever I have lost the way
To the flesh that was mine today
I left my trace I left my mark
Carnal ways to recreate the heart
Feel the pain and we know
And with the pain we are cursed with child

Lol...obviously don't know much about the new generation of metal. I kind of agree on the "growling" but a lot of screamers are actually really good at what they do. You couldn't do it. And I know you or Metallica couldn't hang with the best new metal bands as far as creativity/technical ability is concerned. It's ok, you're not the only person who's ignorant about it.

Ive been playing drums and percussion for 14 years now and i think ive gotten pretty creative and good at it. Trust me, im better than Lars ulrich LOL and i would hope any new modern day drummers would be. I wouldn't ever want to scream and i wouldn't participate in a musical group that did growl and scream, EVER, unless it was for a comedy festival. Rapid thrashing double bass pedal is hard to do in that modern death metal garbage but when you see the ones that do it, they have no other drum skills except the basic beats and big noise. No Class.

I have no interest in going into threads created by you guys about your retarded "metal" bands and bash them. This thread is for review, i bet you guys havn't even heard the whole album. This thread is for I like it or I don't like it responses. not, "Metallica is dead, retarded, old, dumb, not modern, and you can understand their music(WTF?) "

Shiiiiiit you're listening to the wrong bands buddy. Ever heard of Blake Richardson? There are a lot of metal drummers who can do more than drill a double bass pedal, and I do agree that for most of them that's all they got. you have to sift through the **** in every genre of music, and I think that includes metal especially.

You hang out on sickdrummer.com?
BTW, my favorite drummers are Brain and Tim Alexander from Primus, JD Blair. I really do appreciate musical talent. **** I even go to see Victor Wooten. Just because I hate Metallica's new album doesn't mean I don't know the value of good technique and skill. I played bass for a while, but couldn't learn to read sheet music because I have a learning disability. What'd I do? Join a band and scream and call it music? Nope. My bass is for sale because I want somebody to give it a better use than I did.
