I'm in desperate need of a decent computer since my old laptop's screen and battery are dead. My desktop's motherboard is slowly dying as well and its old enough its impossible to find a compatible replacement. So since I'm constantly moving from one place to another I'd rather just have a nice rugged laptop. Any suggestions?

Looking for:
-less than $600
-fairly rugged - won't physically break easily and can take abuse
-14 or 15 inch screen
-decent battery life
-80gb or more hard drive space

I'm not sure what to buy, but I'm not going to buy another HP. I've had the worst experience with them and my current laptop.

I got my Compaq for 500, but since you don't want to deal with HP products I'd say try and find a Dell. Pretty much every new laptop comes with more than an 80gb HD, so you should be able to find something to fit your needs. Mine has a 250gb HD with 3g of RAM, so I'm sure you'd be able to find something comparable in your price range.

Honestly, when I was about to buy mine I priced it out with Dell, HP, and, Gateway.

All of them came to like 1600 bucks.

Went to walmart, picked up a laptop for 790 bucks with a warrenty that was the same performance of what I priced out. It was a toshiba, I absolutely love it. I threw linux on it and now its indestructable. The good thing about walmart is, they will take ANY return so if yours messes up, take it back!

Or, if you are more computer savvy... Check out Sagar laptops. They are the company that makes laptops for Dell, HP, Toshiba... yes all of them. Then they get logos stamped on them. However, SAGAR are the people that make them first. You can save alot of money if you get a SAGAR and put your own software on.

My buddy is a computer nerd/genius and his Sagar laptop should have been about 3.5 grand from anywhere else. He built it himself with help from Sagar for like 1550.
