Mavericks' Howard insults anthem

DALLAS (AP) -- The battered reputation of Josh Howard took another hit this week when an online video surfaced showing the Dallas Mavericks forward disrespecting the national anthem.

In a video posted on YouTube, Howard is shown on a football field at a charity flag football game. As the national anthem plays in the background, Howard approaches a camera and says: The Star Spangled Banner is going on right now. I don't even celebrate that [expletive]. I'm black." (See the video here.)

Howard's agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, directed questions to team owner Mark Cuban, who in an e-mail declined to comment.

The incident is the latest off-court problem for Howard, a fifth-year pro from Wake Forest who averaged 19.9 points and seven rebounds last season. He was arrested in July when police said he was drag racing at 94 mph in a 55 zone. A court appearance was scheduled for next week.

Howard was criticized last season for saying in a radio interview during a first-round playoff series against New Orleans that he occasionally smokes marijuana. Later that same series, he angered coach Avery Johnson by throwing himself a birthday bash after a Game 4 loss to the Hornets.

He is a perfect reason why it exists.

He is the product of athletes being put on a pedestal and they believe they are invincible. He went to Wake Forrest, one of the top schools in the country but spews such stupidity.. it shows that he probably didnt have to go to class a day in his life. It has nothing to do with race.

No Tony, this sentence has everything to do with race.

"The Star Spangled Banner is going on right now. I don't even celebrate that [expletive]. I'm black."

So what, he speaks for all blacks because he's stupid? His ignorance has nothing to do with race, its not like we secretly support him.

I never said he does. I was commenting on the fact that you said it had nothing to do with race.

If i go 150 mph in traffic and say i did it cause I'm white....it is a racist statement. Nothing to do with other people, just me dragging a whole race down cause i choose to be stupid.

You're not dragging **** down because you don't represent ****. He doesn't represent **** but his damn self.

I bet if he said he did it because he was an Atheist then it'd be a religious issue.

What if he said it because he likes red shirts. Does it help people be prejudice against people that wear red shirts? No.

Does it give some ignorant sunuva ***** an excuse for hating people that wear red shirts? Yes.

It's just not good for anyone.

i agree with you tony except for you last part.

it does have to do with his attitude because hes saying that he will not say the athem because he is black. that is pretty f*cking stupid and he is bringing race into it, dunno why though. and no one is saying the he represents blacks what josh howard is doing is separating himself by using race.

Looking past to what was relative. He made it racial as soon as he said black. I fully understand that he doesn't represent anyone but himself.

His comment (even if he is the only one that believes it) can be seen by another person as i don't pledge simple because i am black.

That other person will probably be smart enough to see he is an idiot and is bring race in for no reason but bring race in non the less.
