View Full Version : DIY: Suede headliner & pillars install

This DIY was done on a 1999 Honda Accord Sedan EX-L

fabric was purchase here: www.DiscountFabricsUSA.com

Well after two days of pretty much non-stop work I have finished the instillation of my suede headliner and pillars. My fingers have blisters, I'm sweaty, sore, tired, STICKY, incoherent, and I'm sure a few other things that I can not think of right now....ohh and I'm happy it is all done!

NOW I didn't go about doing this DIY as some of you might have come accustom to when I post up DIYs. Why you may ask...i dunno...It was a lot of work :D

I ordered myself 5 yards of black suede a few days ago and received the suede today (finished the install in the same day!) I removed everything from the car that I wanted to apply suede to. I just made sure to bag up all the loose screws and carefully look at everything as I was taking the interior apart BEFORE JUST PULLING ON THINGS AND BREAKING THEM.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/nittanys1/diy/suede/IMG_2551.jpg

After I removed everything from the car I started first by removing the original cloth that was on the parts. I found that the moon roof cover was extremely easy to remove the cloth off of compared to the headliner. In the process of taking off the headliners cloth, the foam tended to remain behind on the board while the cloth came off. This is what gave me my blisters as i was rubbing the foam in the direction I was pulling the cloth off. This kept the foam attached to the cloth more so then on the headliner.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/nittanys1/diy/suede/IMG_2559.jpg

Once I got all of the cloth removed I took out my sanded and made sure that all of the remaining foam was off. I first started scraping it off with a knife then picking at it, then hand sanding it...but remembered about my powered sanded which I found to be the best way to remove the foam.

Next I took the plastic pillars and washed them with degreaser. Upon finishing this I figured that sanding them would allow for better adhesion for the suede. SO I went ahead and sanded all of the pillars.

I have more then enough suede left over to suede the rear shelf and front dash, I plan on doing this BUT have limited time right now as the next few weeks I have some big shows lined up.

Then next morning I work up to a package at the front door! My suede had arrived safe and sound; not to mentions SUPER FAST for free shipping!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/nittanys1/diy/suede/IMG_2574.jpg

I went ahead and got to work around 10am laying the suede and gluing it to the parts. I worked piece by piece with very few brakes between parts and finished everything by 8pm. It was a very long day for myself!

Due to the fact of not having in progress pics I'm just going to post up the end results for everyone to enjoy! :D If you have and questions or comments please feel free to post them up!!!

09-11-2008, 09:29 PM
yeah it is! You just need to apply it in VERY soft sprays, if you apply too much you need to give it a few mins to soak up and then it works just fine. I ran into that a few times and just took the time to let it sit then went with it.

I had a feeling that someone would say that. I'm working on that right now but with some shows this weekend and next I needed to get this taken care off asap, PLUS most of those are not plastic pieces rather they are rubber...i'd rather not paint them...

what? I want to know more on applying it to the part you want it attached too

Nittanys1

you spray and apply, working it slowly on as you lay the cloth...its extremely hard/impossible to show you that with only one person there to do the DIY...

Nittanys1
06-04-2009, 10:49 PM
another thought...i started in the middle and worked my way out. I only applied glue to a little area and laid that down then more glue and laid that part out and worked my way to the end...

I have also been getting asked about the visors so here is that info...

there are teeth around 90% of the visor where both side of the fabric was shoved into the teeth and they held on to it. when I removed my old fabric I made sure to keep it whole and then use that as a template to trace, make sure to leave about 1/2 inch around the template.

Also what did you use to push the fabric in to these teeth you mentioned, a flat blade screwdriver or were you able to get it in with a finger?

So I started wrapping door panels last night. Since I suck at sewing and don't have a sewing machine anyways I'm debating on spraying the door handles black with satin black Krylon Plastic Fusion then maybe using the soft touch spray over that if i don't like how the Fusion contrasts with the suede...I want the interior blacked out.

When it comes to doing these things as a diy, you do have to be careful. Most of the times if you do the suede headliner yourself, you will have problems in the near future with it sagging. If you google it you will see where people have had a good result, but then it turns into a nightmare. Not saying it cant be done. Seems like Nittanys1 has his staying pretty good. But from so many nightmare stories i have hear/read about/ had to fix my customers cars, i dont recommend it too much because it can really cost you a lot if you screw it up for an upholster to fix it for you. Different suedes weight different and even though the "spray can glue" you can buy says it will work for headliners, it never last unless the material is extremely light

If you are going to dye your panels, i will give you a little tip. Go to a paint distrubitor and buy SEM. IT runs about 15 dollars a can to the public. It is the BEST plastic dye on the market

Nittanys1
06-27-2009, 10:38 AM
Good tip! I haven't had any problems so far but if I do I have enought fabric left over to do it again. I didn't use the strongest glue possible so there is room for improvement.

Dont get me wrong, i am all for doing things as cheap as possible when on a budget. Sometimes being cheap can cost in the long run. Ex. some headliner boards themselves are over 300 dollars, depending on the make/model. So if you screw it up by trying to take it out and not know how, or if you have to redo it because it starts to sag and the glue pulls chunks out of the headliner (doesn't always happen) then it can rack up a big bill. some plasitc dye will be a nightmare if you dont apply it right and everything starts to chip, and suede can fade if you dont get the right kind of suede. I am a diyer myself, but just want to inform people some things to look out for.

question...when you pulled the old fabric of the headliner..you left the foam on the leadliner and put the suede on top of it right?

Nittanys1
07-30-2009, 08:48 AM
no I didn't, i took the time to take that off because I knew the suede would not stay up if I left it. I had a friend leave the entire headliner intact to still have the squishy feel and he said that he read it would hold better then just adding it to the cardboard headliner.

you doing your mistu? I dont know how those are made, however my honda ones were basically just stuffed together.

there are teeth around 90% of the visor where both side of the fabric was shoved into the teeth and they held on to it. when I removed my old fabric I made sure to keep it whole and then use that as a template to trace, make sure to leave about 1/2 inch around the template.

Also what did you use to push the fabric in to these teeth you mentioned, a flat blade screwdriver or were you able to get it in with a finger?
