View Full Version : General Chat Might Be Getting A Kia?

So apparently I've got a Kia hookup. A service manager at a Kia dealership plays golf regularly with my father and has offered to get us a Kia at dealer cost. I'm not sure what that equates too, but it sound a lot like "cheaper" to me. As much as I love the Stang, if I can swap the Stang in on a Spectra5 and come out under $20K total, I'll probably wind up doing it. I gotta go talk to the guy tomorrow to run the numbers and test drive one.

I'm only considering the Spectra5 right now because it's basically a rebadged Protege5. Sport wagon (station wagon) with sport suspension, 140HP, 4-wheel disk brakes, 16" wheels, and it actually doesn't look tht bad. It has pretty much all the basics that I'm looking for. Adequate power, a 5-speed, good gas mileage, and a jack for my MP3 player. Looking at one in black. I figured with wheels, tint, exhaust, and a drop it look pretty decent.

Thoughts? Please keep the "Kia's are crap" comments to a minimum. Thanks.

not bad, especially if your getting the hook up.

Well if its the truth, its the truth.

Three of my buddies (my friends, not friends' friends) bought a Kia and said they'd never do it again.

BUT, if this is a rebadged Protege as you say, it might be a GREAT idea. Protege quality (is that good?) and Kia price - especially with the discount.

If the price is right, I say go for it!

Any ideas what the difference is between Base Price and Dealer Cost?

I say do it man! the stang is nice but with rising gas prices, and a cheaper insurance, and honestly they aren't bad cars. the KIA around here business is up a RIDICULOUS amount! they seem to be good cars besides.... wagons equal win!

i'd say with a car like that there is about 3-4k in it. the sentras here @ nissan have like 3.2 in them from what i understand

Can't agree more. Hehe.:D

If this helps your car situation out then go for it. You may have some extra cash to throw in a project later. The Protege5 is an awesome car, they're very comfortable and the interior isn't bad.

There is a kid in rome who just got one of those htinkin hes all big and bad. he ran a 18.2 at the track. couldnt break 18s. for that money who could buy ALOT nicer car. the interior isnt the greatest either. getting it for a DD? you can get the new altima 2.5s for right around the same price and that car is a hell of alot nicer. interior looks, exterior looks, and performance.

Nerdsrock22
09-02-2008, 02:37 PM
I had no idea they were related to the Protege5.

If you are looking to stay under $20k, I would think you would have a lot more options though.

i don't think the point here is to have big power though. its to get a different car that is "new"er even by a little bit, lower payments, and all the other costs... sure there are "nicer" cars for the money but seriously. when you're costs to own a car are basically nothing... why care?

Why not pick up a Fit or Versa for that price, and avoid the depreciation?

bwhahaha AMY get a yaris again! EPIC WIN! BRING RINI BACK! DO IT DO IT DO IT! lol

i think he's just looking for something over the 120 hp mark...

i'd say a protege 5 or that kia... being that i don't see any other cars in the 140+ space thats either attractive or in the bottom price range.

yaris and fit are under the 140 hp mark

and the versa is just trash (trust me you'll sell your sould to get out of it!)

mazda 3 = MOAR money

and i really can't think of any more past that

There is a kid in rome who just got one of those htinkin hes all big and bad. he ran a 18.2 at the track. couldnt break 18s.Not looking to go fast. The only "go-fast" parts the car would see is maybe an intake/exhaust setup and some small suspension tid-bits. Looking for just a daily. I can get a project later.

getting it for a DD? you can get the new altima 2.5s for right around the same price and that car is a hell of alot nicer. interior looks, exterior looks, and performance.I test drove a 2.5 Altima and hated it. The 2.5 has no business in that car. Felt like a total turd. Also, I can't get an Altima at dealer cost. :goodjob:

That's one of the few Kias I like...they're stylish, pretty solid, and a relatively sporty driver compared to its contemporaries. Not quite as refined or well-finished as its Japanese rivals, but you get that rock-solid warranty, and a thousands-less price. It's a good bit of kit...I'd say go for it.

You guys are missing the point completely. Allow me to reiterate...

I'M GETTING A KIA BECAUSE I CAN GET IT AT DEALER COST AND NOT LOSE MY @SS ON MY MUSTANG WHEN I TRADE IT IN. I CAN'T DO THAT WITH OTHER CARS.

My question was, what do you think of the Kia and my proposed move? Thoughts, comments, advice?

How much can be transferred from the Protege5? I remember there being a pretty big fan base for those cars. Not sure yet. I hopped on Kia-Forums to check it out and ask some questions. Mods seem to be in short supply, but Kia's in-house performance, Kia Sport, has things for sale. Short-shifters, intakes, exhausts, springs, shocks/struts, sway bars, strut bars, ect...

There's not a big aftermarket for the car, but there's enough for me to do what I want.

spectre5 isnt really related to the protege5 at all.... it just looked like it alot, they share the elantra chassis. And the Elantra beta2 2.0 motor.

The only kia's that were mazda related where the 94-97 sephias, they had mazda 1.8dohc bp motors, and it wasnt really a mazda built motor. i hear it was just a direct copy built by kia.. but it was exactly the same in and out.

I know, I just want Ran to tell us where he gets that from. He trying to justify buying the Kia with Mazda qualities. It was designed by the same people and IIRC it's running the old Mazda BP motor. I'd have to double-check though.

Either way, I test drove one and was pleasantly surprised. The car is quite spirited and handles pretty well. Body roll was at a minimum and the 140HP motor moved the little wagon in a quick (not fast) manner. The exterior is easy on the eyes with the only real eyesore being the blocky bulge on the front for a front plate, but other than that it looked really good in black. The interior was okay. The guages were a little bland and the seaweed green dials could go away. The seats weren't very comfy and offered so side support at all. They did look good though, lol. The center dash was decent with the seaweed green lighting but everything was simple and easy to figure out. The knobs felt a little cheap, but nothing aside from that. Door trims and other little dress-up bits were at a minimum but added a nice touch to what would otherwise be just another Kia interior.

I'd rate the car a 7.5/10 because of the lackluster interior, but it gets high marks in exterior appearance and fun-to-drive factor. :goodjob:

Not sure if I'll be happy with a trade-in or if it'll really help me with my financial situation in the long run. Still running some numbers so I'll check back with you guys later. :)

It has no relation to the Protege5 or Mazda. Its a rebadged Hyundai, and it uses a Hyundai engine as well.

There are Nissans that quality as a POS or barely better than a POS, as well as Toyotas and Hondas.

While past Kias were not leaders in engineering they continue to get better and gain ground.

This is coming soon.

Just because you can buy a new kia for 11k with a 100k warranty doesn't mean it's a great car, in fact it's probably the opposite since kia is basically giving the cars away. That is, assuming you CAN buy a new kia for 11k with warranty. And if I had 11k, I could make along list of cars I'd rather buy....2000 lexus gs300, 2000 honda civic, accord, just to name a few...I personally wouldn't ever buy a brand new car anyways though, I'd wait atleast a year...:2cents:

so kia likes to copy other makes' designs....how original...and no, the civic looks better, that civic wannabe isn't bad, but it has too much chrome...
Lets see here.
Nissan 240 SX last gen-Lexus SC influenced
Nissan Xterra- Land Rover influenced
Nissan 240 Z- Jaguar E type influenced
Nissan 350 Z- Porsche 911 influenced
Nissan Altima 1st gen-Infiniti J30 influenced
Nissan Altima 3rd/4th gens-Lexus GS influenced
Nissan Maxima 3rd gen- BMW 5 influenced
Nissan Maxima last gen -Lexus GS influenced
New Maxima- Oldsmobile Auroa influence

Everyone copies from one another and takes cues from one another. True the Koreans have copied more than most but the Japanese have too, the Americans and now the GErmans are copying Asian cues.

Nissan has some original designs, like the 300ZX (pretty much perfect) Murano, NX 2000 and Versa (which is a Renault anyway) but they are far from original. I am not saying they are blatant copies but they do take other makers designs.

You do know Nissan is owned by the French right? :)

My first car was a Nissan fwiw. :)

ok that makes perfect sense..

Sell a ****ty car for 11k
With a 10year/100k warranty
So your company can spend thousands and thousands of dollars on labor and replacing parts.

Rios have been out for a few years...its no new model were u gettin these crazy hypothesis from..

ALL NEW 08-09 KIAS ARE BACKED WITH THE 10yr/100k....takes u about 30secs to look up this info..

The Sentra is sluggish, unresponsive, handles like crap, and is ugly as hell. The Spec-V is much better in terms of power and handling, but it's still ugly and with that package you're over $21,000. Having driven both, the Spectra outdoes the Sentra in every aspect except for maybe the A/C control knobs.

Also, don't come in here comparing old cars to new cars. Compare apples to apples if you're going to do anything at all. If not, then please leave my thread. You've yet to contribute anything of value.

You guys can praise kia at all you want, but at the end of the day you ppl do not drive KIA's, why? Because there are better choices out there.

Well, I do own a Kia and I think it's great for what it is.

Ran, if you are looking for a practical and dependable car, then go for it. I bought a 07 Rio last year and couldn't be happier. I picked it up straight off the showroom floor and after just under a year and 20k later, I have had zero problems or complaints. I was looking for something that was cheap and reliable and got good gas mileage for a decent daily and that is exactly what I got. Yes, the interior is a little utilitarian and no it isn't a sports car, but that is not what I bought it for. Almost 40mpg for a 10k car that has zero issues isn't bad any day of the week.
