Well like the title says. What do you do at work, any danger involved in your job? Anything cool that not everyone can do? Etc.

Pics are welcome.....

I do quality control and warranty claims for a large international tire company in Suwanee. It was interesting at 1st but now I'm bored out my mind. I just look at damaged tires and test new tires on simulation machines all day long. Then write up reports on what I saw or what data I collected. Looking for something else. I'm not seriously looking but I need to start. This office job just isn't for me.

Before this I worked at Gwinnett Place Nissan as an ASE Certified Technician. Loved working on cars but hated the politics of a dealership!!

GREEN - I.T is where it's at man. There are gonna be a lot of people in the next 10 - 15 years to see their jobs eaten by computers. No matter WHAT you do for food, it's a good time to become smart about computers and computing. The money is amazing - it's never the same gig everyday - and one you get some time under your belt u can set your own price and "rules" if you prefer the contractor route vs employee route (I do). For example - I won't take a contract where I am forced to work on-site. This allows me to work multiple contracts from home (SERIOUSLY doubt E*Trade would let me bring AT*T hardware in the data-center to work while I am on the clock - LOL). Start small - help desk/maybe desktop support and learn EVERYONE'S job around you. You can't lose.

SicStangs - yes I have heard of practical - you guys do a lot of our contracts on the scope-dope side. Good stuff - ur pM is returned!

You just gave the worst advice I've heard in a long time :lmfao:. The job market is saturated with people "learning others' jobs" and then thinking they can conquer the world. How many opportunities do you see about people just, "Letting contractors in because they learned someone's job" ??? Also, where do you think these people will meet Networking employers if they ask for Job advice on an Import Car Forum?

Be real with people- :goodjob:It's even more competitive now than it was a couple years ago, and that's where I'll leave this.;)

BABY J
08-26-2008, 10:18 AM
I'll explain it a bit more. In the late 80s and early 90s, I.T largely was a "jack of all trades" industry. You had to be a packet chaser, OS guy, application guy, web guy all rolled into one. Then the 1st hotshots to really come out of school w/ a degree in CIS, CS etc. started specializing. At that point, they didn't want the jack of all trades guy - they wanted the specialist - the 1 thing you do, you do it better than any1 on the planet. So a lot of guys who "hacked their way into employment" (like me) were losing ground - data centers were growing way too big to not have specialists. Then the bust - but we won't get into that - it's another topic. NOW, you can't just be a scope-dope and secure any kinda real job - not for the long term. You have to be well-versed in more than one thing. It's not as wild-wild west as it used to be, but you best believe you are gonna have to know some1 else's job if you wanna be around for the long term. Any1 who works in I.T will tell you this. But hey - if you're a 1 hit wonder and still have your job good for you - but you can't put your eggs in 1 basket in I.T anymore - you will drown.

PS: and yes I have seen guys go from desktop support into serious roles. You're either technical or you're not. The Sr. SAP Engineer at coke right here in ATL did EXACTLY that.

Yep, I'm an accountant. To be more specific I am the head of accounting for the entire US division of a European supply chain management software company. We develop, sell, implement and maintain software for stores of all kinds. Some small and some that are huge, hundreds of stores and I guarantee everyone here has been in at least one.

Anyway, I do everything. I have the money. Financial statements, budgeting and forecasting, payroll, invoicing, AR and AP, everything. I am a bit of a control freak so I don't let anything under my department get past me. I've been with the company for 5.5 years.. started off when I was still working in public accounting and my company was a client. They liked me so much they hired me and paid for my move to Atlanta. Very lucky.

It's a pretty nice job. I get a window to look out of all day, plenty of vacation, flexible hours and occasionally, a trip to one of our many offices in Europe. As the company grows, my job changes and I have to adapt and figure out new ways to do things all the time.

I appreciate the advice.. ill be honest im a very advanced level user, I understand you gotta start small and work your way up but im trying to find an opportunity to jump in somewhere intermediate level. Its hard trying to plan a career transition when you're already established at what you're doing and have financial obligations. Fortunately right now im doing a majority of the IT work for my company in addition to my primary job so I can use this as job experience on my resume.

Currently I work in a blinds factory in the office, inputting orders, fixing customer mistakes, dealing with dumbass customers, being a customer service rep, manager, etc

I so want to go back into IT. This job bores me.

Damn!!!! You guys have some great jobs... Me I am just a store manager at AutoZone. I actually love the job and pay but HATE the area that my store is in. I turned the store around 100% in a year and just made the President's Club- top 5% mgrs with over 4000 stores nationwide, AND this is only my second year EVER managing.

Never imagined I'd use my degree to be in retail.

Store Manager for Fossil.

You know the folks that sell watches, etc. We produced other brands like Starck, Armani, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Diesel, and a slew of others.

Really no danger, besides this economy SKEWING MY DAMN profits/etc.

Job is easy, I get to hire some good looking eye candy, bonus' are good too. Overall my job is pretty damn awesome, besides the point its retail. Plus theres room to grow and you can't say that about a lot of retail environments.

here a few pics, really don't have many..

Congrats.. But let me ask you this?

Why are most autozone employee's so terrible? They are trashy... pants sagging.. they totally look like shit...

I actually stole a former Autozone employee who's actually doing great at the company I work for.. He was to much talent compare to the rest I've seen @ autozone..

I go to the one by my house all the time... Store Number is 2002 on hwy 20 in lawrenceville..

One time, the dude there sold me a bunch of shit for $20 bucks.. I almost call that shit in.. but decided not to.

And I was there on Saturday, Buying a batterry.. The store manager was there.. White chic.. 4 out of 10 customer service..But She was nice looking .. 1st nice looking female i see working there..

But while she was walking to find my battery in the back since it wasnt on the rack, Another female employee was asking her what she wanted her to do.. the manager said.. SELL stuff.. The ugly dyke looking employee.. Looks at me and says.. "I like to sell stuff... especially Weed.." I was kinda of offended by this because Im no fucking pot head.. But you know what.. I may never return to that place...

She was a like 300lbs female, wearing pants below her ass.. I mean, she is straight nasty.. and stunk as well.. I think she's a dyke.

The reason I say this, is because Ive been retail for 13 years now.. And customer service is one thing I understand.. and explain on a daily basis..

I hate bad customer service.. and understand when you have un-professional employees working for you.

I work for Honda and I make changes and adjustments to all the machinery that makes the blocks for the Civic Si motor, Element/CR-V motor, Acura TSX motor, Acura RDX turbo motor. I work in the aluminum machining department where the block gets milled and drilled and inspected.

Dangers:
-Crazy robotic arms that take over the world and have the strength to rip you apart, but they are caged in and have too many safety cut-off switches
-Electrical panels which I am not allowed in because my uniform is not a fireproof C-2.
-Molten metal in the casting dept. (I never go there)

...and the biggest danger of them all!
-The auto industry collapsing on itself and losing the job :P

I get to hear all the inside information of Honda and how we stack up etc etc. Our new technologies and how much they cost; OMG!

...and I roll around in Vtak sauce :ninja:

GIS Tech.

Our company focuses on electrical distributions, gps collecting and network building. We have guys in the feild on atv's who take a point at every pole in the Co-op's network and mark the poles class, height, age, and last treatment. Then a mapper comes by on another atv later to put in the assemblies, conductors, and anything else the pole carries, joint use etc. The points are sent in as a .ssf file and here is where I come in. I do differential corrections on the gps points. The combine the points with the attributes collected by the mapper. Put in the conductors and then start editing for mistakes or loops. Then we might do something like line the new network up with and ariel background. fun.
