State-media story fuels questions on gymnast's age
By JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 11 minutes ago

BEIJING - Just nine months before the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese government's news agency, Xinhua, reported that gymnast He Kexin was 13, which would have made her ineligible to be on the team that won a gold medal this week.

In its report Nov. 3, Xinhua identified He as one of "10 big new stars" who made a splash at China's Cities Games. It gave her age as 13 and reported that she beat Yang Yilin on the uneven bars at those games. In the final, "this little girl" pulled off a difficult release move on the bars known as the Li Na, named for another Chinese gymnast, Xinhua said in the report, which appeared on one of its Web sites, http://www.hb.xinhuanet.com
The Associated Press found the Xinhua report on the site Thursday morning and saved a copy of the page. Later that afternoon, the Web site was still working but the page was no longer accessible. Sports editors at the state-run news agency would not comment for publication.
If the age reported by Xinhua was correct, that would have meant He was too young to be on the Chinese team that beat the United States on Wednesday and clinched China's first women's team Olympic gold in gymnastics. He is also a favorite for gold in Monday's uneven bars final.
Yang was also on Wednesday's winning team. Questions have also been raised about her age and that of a third team member, Jiang Yuyuan.
Gymnasts have to be 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the games. He's birthday is listed as Jan. 1, 1992.
Chinese authorities insist that all three are old enough to compete. He herself told reporters after Wednesday's final that "my real age is 16. I don't pay any attention to what everyone says."
Zhang Hongliang, an official with China's gymnastics delegation at the games, said Thursday the differing ages which have appeared in Chinese media reports had not been checked in advance with the gymnastics federation.
"It's definitely a mistake," Zhang said of the Xinhua report, speaking in a telephone interview. "Never has any media outlet called me to check the athletes' ages."
Asked whether the federation had changed their ages to make them eligible, Zhang said: "We are a sports department. How would we have the ability to do that?"
"We already explained this very clearly. There's no need to discuss this thing again."
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has said repeatedly that a passport is the "accepted proof of a gymnast's eligibility," and that He and China's other gymnasts have presented ones that show they are age eligible. The IOC also checked the girls' passports and deemed them valid.
A May 23 story in the China Daily newspaper, the official English-language paper of the Chinese government, said He was 14. The story was later corrected to list her as 16.
"This is not a USAG issue," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "The FIG and the IOC are the proper bodies to handle this."

partially correct, they don't want to offend china by probing too deeply.

they also won't investigate bc if it's found out that china did cheat, they do not want to be put in the position again (go read about what happened at the utah salt lake city games for pairs figure skating) to have to take away or give out extra medals. last time it happened they caught retarded amounts of flak for it so they're not going to bother this time around.

The whole time I've been watching I said every time they were too young. I mean, sht, it's pretty obvious I think. I knew girls that were Chinese when they were 16 and they looked older than the gymnasts do. LOL.

whether they get stripped of their medals or not, they should have them taken away. Who the fuk cares if they are the host country? They cheated. End of story. If the Americans cheated in 96 you can bet your ass we would have been stripped and probably punished in 2000.

i do believe that some of the Chinese girls may have been underage, but they still did the best gymnastically. i dont see a benefit for the chinese using underage girls. they still performed the best no matter their age. they deserve their medals.

On another forum I am on this was discussed and one of the posters found a quote about it from a member of the US gymnastics assoc. He said the ideal ages for gymnastics is 11-14 as they are more flexable and have the ability to do a higher degree of difficulty on many tricks.

A psychologist also said that children that age feel pressure much less than when older.

i was wondering if the younger age was a benefit at all. thanks. but they still did excelently and in my opinion older gymnasts have an experience advantage. idk.....i think they still deserve to keep them.

The girl on the left is hot as hell. Anyone else notice the chinese whore is throwing up a gang sign?

Honestly what bothers me is that fact that there are set rules for participating in the Olympics. Every other country had to have contenders that were of legal age, why should China be allowed to disregard them? They pull the kids when they are 3 years old to start doing Gymnastics. Thats all they do their whole life until they compete in the Olympics. China cheated, they should be punished. End of story.

Partially correct.

We are leading in medals.

They are leading golds.

Track and Field is kicking in and we should be able to play catch up during this to the Chinese.

either way they did great this year so they really have nothing to be shameful about, even if they get their medals stripped they are still leading in Golds. Nothing for them to be ashamed of (except they cheated), but i doubt they give a ****.

funny that most of you don't even realize the most important here...there is NO WAY TO PROVE that these girls are underage. fact of the matter is that the government has pointed out that their age, as documented by their passports, as 16. goodluck trying to prove otherwise.

Yep. I thought all the judges judging the gymnastics last night...were all over the board. I thought Shawn should have got the GOLD, but she got the silver, her routine was more difficult, I was mad about that too. I wanted to throw my remote into the tv!!!!!

The craziest was the vault in which that chinese littlin' lands on her shins and . . . wins the gold!!

How the hell does that happen? Oh yah....their in China.

There is one way to try and prove it. These girls are obviously not in their first year of competing. Go back to previous competition entries and see if the ages match the dates of registration. If a competition 3 years ago has them registered as 11...bingo...strip that **** off their underaged necks and show to the world what f/cking morons they really are . Also, the Olympic committee isn't the only people who can investigate this, and yes, the Chinese government can "make them" any age they want to, but I doubt all immunization, education, and other registrations have all been doctored....someone slipped up somewhere.

BanginJimmy

I would imagine this isnt a new occurance for them and they have the routine down. Also, who said anything about education? Communist olympic athletes are just that, athletes. Education isnt important as it gets in the way of training.
